White limited overs cricket at Trent Bridge!

SECONDS SEE OFF WELSH TO REACH TROPHY FINAL

Nottinghamshire 2nd XI defeated Glamorgan 2nd XI by 36 runs at Trent Bridge to reach the final of the Second Eleven Trophy.
Chasing 217 to win, the Welsh county lost Dan Roberts, Mike O’Shea and Mike Powell as they slipped to 62/3 after 15 overs. But David Brown (74) and Ben Wright (56) then re-ignited the chase to see Glamorgan to 167/5 from 34 overs. But a collapse then occurred as Glamorgan were dismissed for 180 in the 37th over.

CB 40 Match 12 v Lancashire at Trent Bridge

TOM SMITH GIVES OUTLAWS AN

ALI BYE

A fine all-round display from Tom Smith proved the difference between the sides in Ali Brown’s farewell professional appearance.
With Hales and Patel away with England, Notts opted for a young team with Jake Ball and Brett Hutton coming into the team with Phillips, Fletcher and Adams rested.
Lancashire meanwhile went with an experienced line-up as their youngsters were involved in a semi-final against Somerset at Taunton Vale. Lancashire won the toss and elected to bat on a dank, miserable and windy day where the only surprise was that the full 80 overs were bowled despite intermittent drizzle. The floodlights were burning bright for most of the Notts innings, without them, bad light would have no doubt ended play long before the final ball was bowled at 1930.

Hutton and Ball in particular leaked runs as Lancashire got off to a brisk start, Stephen Moore fell to fine catch low down at mid-off by Brown for 12, 28 for one. Tom Smith though was in fine form and added 101 with Captain Stephen Croft in 15 overs as no Notts bowler could exert any control. Croft finally sliced Mullaney to short third man to depart for 32. White and Mullaney belatedly slowed the run rate down as Karl Brown played on in slow motion off Mullaney for 15, 166 for three. The match though lacked intensity, not helped by the dire weather. Smith reached his ton off 94 balls and finally fell for 117 to a catch at deep mid-wicket by Mullaney off White, an innings which included one six and 16 fours off 104 balls. Horton put bat to ball to finish unbeaten on 43 as the last two balls of the innings from young Hutton went for ten, as Lancashire closed on a commanding 248 for five. Notts ground fielding did not reach its normal standards not helped by greasy ball in the wet conditions. White dropped a catch and Notts were also penalised a crucial two runs for not having sufficient number of players in the circle during a power play. Pattinson was mysteriously only given seven overs to finish with two for 32. Hutton (6-0-41-0) outbowled Ball (3-0-31-0) and based on the evidence of this game and the Sri Lanka game three weeks ago, looks a far better prospect.
Notts opened with Mullaney once again but despite getting off to a rapid start, he fell for 22 with the score on 28 holing out off Tom Smith. Brown in his last innings was strangled down the leg side for 18 off that man Smith. He departed to a good ovation in front of a sparse crowd of 2,500. Wessels fell leg before to Smith in his next over for 5. Elstone and Darren Bravo added 71 in 11 overs, before Elstone went aerial to be caught by Smith off Kyle Hogg for 26, 137 for four in the 23rd over. Bravo fell two overs leg before to Stephen Parry for a run a ball 62 which included five fours and one six into The Fridge. A big innings from Bravo is not far away. Spinners Kerrigan, Parry and Croft were turning the screw as the run rate was increasing. Franks’ once again showing his weakness against spin and appeared bamboozled and eventually departed off Parry for a 14-ball seven. Read and White turned the game round by added 71 in ten overs with the captain once again in fine form. With Notts now needing only nine off eight balls, White played an extremely foolish scoop shot to depart with his stumps akimbo,

as Smith picked up four wickets to go with his ton, a first for Lancashire in List A cricket. Hutton came in and got a single, so Notts needed eight of the last over. Three singles came off the first three balls of last over bowled by ex Notts loanee Hogg. Read knowing a boundary was needed went for the big shot but fell to catch at mid-wicket for a splendid 64 off 50 balls which included one pulled six off Hogg to bring up his 50. The batsman had crossed and Hogg was now on a hat trick as Hutton was caught at point for three. Pattinson could only manage two off the last ball as Notts fell two runs short of a tie. The no ball earlier had cost them a point. Smith finished with four for 48. More importantly the two losses against Lancashire had cost them qualification in the competition that Director of Cricket has used as a breeding ground for his younger members of squad.

Hales gets the England T20 call 2011 Archive

Alex Hales joins Samit, Swanny and Captain Broad in the England T20 squad to face the Indians at Old Trafford next week............................... not an unexpected inclusion as it was strongly rumoured during the Durham game.

Still no word on Harry Gurney................................... but on cricinfo this interesting article:

2012 - Mick Newell on Alex Hales, " if he wants to keep his England (Lions) place he'll have to pull his finger-out"

Harry Gurney

OUT FOX?

The unwell kept secret of Harry Gurney's signature on a Newell Deal has still yet to be made official .Charlie Dagnall leaked it Friday; Josh Cobb and Wayne White banded a few names towards gurneyhf confirming its validity as a story on Saturday; the Director effectively said on RN that he had plans involving Gurney (and Turner) for next season, on Friday night. "Nothing will happen until after the the T20 finals" the Director said - well the wily Foxes out-witted the Cidermen yesterday.

If true, it will give Notts that left arm variation that we've lacked since Sid's repatriation.

This story was initially RT'd by Charlie Shreck.

Saturday 27th August 2011 t20 Finals Day at Edgbaston, Birmingham - preview

Semi Final 1

Foxes v Lightning
aka
The day can sometimes to too much for some.
The Paul Nixon farewell party MK2. Foxes will be boosted by the departure of Lancs' effective death bowler, Junaid Khan who's been called-up by Pakistan and by new England international, little Jimmy Taylor returning from Dublin for the game. Foxes have rested most of their squad prior to this fixture including key man Andy McDonald.

Semi Final 2

Hampshire Royal Flushes (from the Armitage Shanks of course) v Somerset  Ifwehaveanicknamewekeepitwellhiddenbuthaveawyvernonourbadgebutmightalsobenamedthesabresandhaveastrongaffiliationwithciderandciderdrinking.

As is the tradition at Finals Day there will be a busy schedule of important Sky TV interviews with friends of Mark Nicholas, Mascot Races, perhaps even the sight of a parachutist or two or a micro-lite aircraft landing on the outfield,  dancing from the Rubicon girls and boys and loads of mega-advertisements as well as three games of cricket that fill any of the small remaining gaps in the action packed running order. Never fear, if the weather turns nasty, none of the important events will be lost to the paying masses as these will be fitted in regardless because the games of cricket can always be shortened or curtailed to accommodate the important attractions.

SF 1
Parry 1/15 from 4 overs

Lancashire won the toss and chose to field with rain around the West Midlands.

Josh Cobb was out first ball of the contest as the Foxes tumble at half way to 74/4 with Jefferson 23 the best score to this point. Over 12 was a wicket maiden bowled by Parry. Rain stopped play at 84/5 after 12.3 overs.

Match reduced to 18 overs - to the advantage of the struggling Foxes.
Razzaq blasts 36 not out as Foxes post a below par 132/6

Rain then interrupted Lightnings innings
53/1 in 8.1overs

Duckworth and then Lewis both had their say and revised target of 80 from 11 overs was conjured up.

Lancs were well on course then, bottled it big time and only managed 79/6, thanks a last ball 6 by Cross that "tied" the teams.

Golden Zero to hero
Josh Cobb 2/6 bowling the penultimate over.
This meant that the first Super-over in English senior cricket was required.
6 balls with 2 wickets maximum.
Lancs 13/0 from their over
Foxes 16/0 from five balls - ex-Outlaw Jefferson 15 of them

Leicestershire advance to the final.

With the time used for the tie-breaking perhaps more over could have been allocated and the result could have been decided by cricket rather than by luck and thunder.

S/F 2 was delayed by SF 1 and a rain interruption. Somerset won the toss and again chose to field.
A 16 over match was reduced to a One Man Show as Shahid Afridi smacked 80 from 42 balls, taking the game seemingly away from the South Westerners. When more rain arrived again the hawkish Royals had flushed out 138/4 from 15.5 overs.
Star turns in 2 innings
Somerset's revised target 95 from 10 overs - brings them back into the game at a stroke!
At half way Somerset were 50/1 but then Tahir came on to bowl and after two balls of his first over Pollard and Tresco were back in the bus shelter.
Jos Buttler (32), yes him again, then took the Cidermen to the brink of victory but Trego and Suppiah failed to drag their team over the line, a tie the result again. Somerset 94/6

Another Super-over tie breaker.

Somerset; Kieswetter and Jos Buttler manage 16/0 off Afridi

Hampshire 5/1 from their over bowled by Alfonso Thomas.

Massive delays caused by the weather and the cricket but not too much as the mascot race took place at the time the final should have started.

0/14 from 4 overs

Wyvern Sabres v Foxes in the Final
Foxes innings, after being put in by Tresco, 145/6 (20 ov)

Jefferson 35
Razzaq 33
Cobb 18

Pollard 2/24
Suppiah 2/27

Somerset Innings 127/9 (20 ov)

Another stumbling innings from Somerset, rarely up with the par throughout their innings. Some tactical use of the twelfth man (Boyce) fielding athletically on the boundary taking four catches in total too, on the field for the less mobile Jefferson to add to the mix by the wily Foxes. But Josh Cobb again was the hero with ball 4/22 as the Wurzels imploded under the lights.

4 catches
What will Nixon do now? Retire after the Champions competition next year?

North beat South by 18 runs.

NB: Foxes shied away from taking the Outlaws on this year, hiding behind the covers on both occasions after Notts had posted scores.

Day 1 v Durham LV= at Trent Bridge

HONOURS EVEN AT THE BRIDGE

Honours were even at Trent Bridge as Durham closed on 44 for three in reply to Notts slightly disappointing 270 at sunny Trent Bridge today.
Graeme White replaced Ireland bound Samit Patel and Pattinson replaced Shreck as Read won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket very much on the Bridgford Road side of the square. Durham meanwhile were missing Harmison (x2), Stokes, Borthwick, Onions and Plunkett but still had possessed a strong batting line-up.
Turner did not last long shouldering arms to Thorp and seeing his bails gone, 21 for one. Bravo and Hales added 58 at four an over until Bravo chased one from Brathwaite to exit caught behind for 23. Hales was batting extremely confidently and went to lunch 79 not out as Notts had reached the relative comfort of 116 for two. Hales received the player of the month award at lunchtime from sponsors PKF.

Notts though lost their way in the afternoon session, Wessels whose share of third wicket partnership was three, edged the preserving Claydon to Mustard. Durham had done their homework as Mullaney once again fell to a short down the legside with Mustard taking his third catch off the brisk Mark Wood, 151 for four.

Read added 32 with Hales but edged Thorp bowling from the Radcliffe Road as Mustard got his fourth catch of the innings. With the first batting point just attained, Hales top edged an attempted pull shot and was caught lowdown by Stoneman off Brathwaite for a splendid 115 off 175 balls with 16 fours. An innings in the context of the match which may prove priceless. Adams was badly dropped off a skier as Notts went to tea on 225 for six.
Adams though kept playing his natural game and holed out at long on off Claydon for 13. Franks had played another doughty innings but edged Claydon to di Venuto at first slip as he departed for a patient 34.

White fell leg before next over to Blackwell as Notts were now 239 for nine. Pattinson thought that attack was the best form of defence and hit three sixes towards the short Bridgford Road boundary, the first of which was caught by Brathwaite but his foot was over the rope. Another six was a one-handed effort into the Clarke Stand. The fun though did not last long as Notts closed on 270 all out, a score about 30 below par on a wicket giving the bowlers a bit of assistance. Pattinson out for entertaining 28. Durham second string attack had bowled well with Claydon finishing with three wickets.

Durham were due to face 22 overs before the close but Pattinson (Radcliffe) and Fletcher (Pavilion) bowled fine opening spells. Keyman di Venuto edged Fletcher to Hales at slip to depart for two. Fletcher signed a new contract keeping at the club until 2014 today, good news for Notts fans but bad news for Bunnyman Marcus down Taunton Way! Pattinson got one to move in and Smith departed in identikit fashion to Karl Turner shouldering arms. Things got even better when Stoneman edged Pattinson to Mullaney in the cordon, Durham 27 for three. The light was closing in and the players came off for bad light with 13 balls unbowled with Durham 226 behind on 44 for three with Collingwood and Benkenstein at the wicket.
Heavy rain is forecast for the whole of tomorrow, but a result can easily be achieved in three days in this fascinating contest.

Nottinghamshire won the toss and elected to bat. [only the second time this season that Phil Mustard hasn't won the toss]
