PATTERSON-WHITE TURNS IT IN NOTTS FAVOUR
Notts won a fascinating low scoring encounter versus Durham by 2 wickets with 12 balls to spare on another scorching day at Gorse Lane
With the temperature reaching 31 degree C in mid-afternoon, Durham won an important toss and elected to bat in front of a crowd or around 750. Much like the encounter versus Northants 12 months ago, despite its green appearance the wicket turned out to be a slow low turner, the surface deteriorating as the game progressed. The returning Patterson-White repeating his 5-wicket bag from last year’s Northants match proved to be the difference between the two sides.
Clark (4) fell to the 4th delivery of the contest, well caught low down to his right by Montgomery at first slip off Hutton (Gorse Lane End), 4 for 1. Left handers Maddinson and Borthwick batted sensibly against the Notts opening pair of bowlers. Durham stood at 46 for 1 after 10 overs with Hutton (5 2 11 0) and Chappell (5 0 31 0) bowling out the first powerplay. Strangely, Hutton never bowled again.
Hayes and Patterson-White came on for the 11th and 12th overs respectively. Hayes bowled 4 overs for 32 in one spell, but was not to bowl again. Maddinson (37) was lbw attempting a pull shot against Patterson-White, 72 for 2 in the 14th over. The ball appearing to be going over the stumps, the partnership for the second wicket of 68 in 13 overs proved to be the largest of the innings.
The Durham 100 came up in the 19th over, the first bowled by Montgomery. Borthwick (36) fell leg before to Patterson-White , 108 for 3 in the 20th over. In his following over, Patterson-White had Dickson (26) leg before on the sweep, 113 for 4. Patterson-White picked up his 4th wicket when he had Coughlin (17) caught at first slip by Montgomery. Next ball, Mackintosh fell for a golden duck, the 5th victim for Patterson-White, 135 for 6 in the 26th over. Singh came on for Patterson-White, who had one over left to bowl, for the 30th over.
17-year-old Mitchell Killeen (17), son of Neil, was caught at short mid-wicket by Hameed off Montgomery, 177 for 7 off 35 overs. Chappell returned for 36th over, Drissell hitting him for 6 over square leg. Montgomery completed his allocation with figures of 10 0 45 1. Umpire Mallender picked up his fifth wicket as he gave Drissell leg before to Chappell for 10, 191 for 8 in the 38th over. With the wicket now taking spin from both ends, Slater replaced Montgomery from the Gorse Lane End and was given a 3-over spell costing 17. Patterson-White came back to bowl his 10th over to finish with the outstanding figures of 10 0 45 5; he had been badly missed in the Gloucester and Middlesex encounters earlier in the week. Singh (5-0-21-0) returned from the Pavilion End and Trevaskis got to his 50 in 69 balls. Chappell picked up his 2nd victim bowling Gibson for 5, 218 for 9 in the 45th over. Trevaskis hit Chappell for six over mid-wicket. Rushworth (1) was the last man to fall caught by Schadendorf off Chappell (3 for 51). Durham 226 all out off 45 overs, crucially they failed to bat out their overs. Trevaskis was left stranded on 59 not out off 74 balls (4x4, 1x6). Notts had bowled 28 overs of spin.
After hitting Rushworth (Gorse Lane End) for two boundaries in the first over of the innings, Slater was bowled by the veteran seamer in the 3rd over for 11, 12 for 1. Budinger went very much on the offensive as in the following over, he hit off spinner Drissell for a straight six. In the 6th over, Budinger hit Rushworth for two legside sixes off successive deliveries. Gibson replaced Rushworth and with his first ball he removed Budinger for 35 off 25 balls (3x4, 3x6), the left hander miscued the ball to Dickson at mid-wicket, 55 for 2 in the 11th over. Gibson (1 for 13) was only given two overs in the innings. Schadendorf (9) playing an expansive drive was bowled by Trevaskis , the 4th ball of the slow left armers opening over, Notts 63 for 3 off 10 overs.
Hameed was caught at short extra cover by Dickson off Trevaskis for 20, 76 for 4 in the 12th over. Two successive boundaries for James off Borthwick saw Notts to 100 in the 19th over. James with Montgomery in tow batted sensibly adding 74 in 17 overs, the biggest stand of the match.
Rushworth returned and had James (35 off 53 balls, 4x4) leg before, 150 for 5 in the 29th over. Trevaskis (10-3-25-2) having a brilliant game was bowled out by the 34th over Killeen came on as the 7th bowler and with his 2nd ball in first team cricket bowled Patterson-White (7) going for a leg side hit, 163 for 6 in the 35th over. Notts needing a further 64 in 15.4 overs.
Singh played another pleasing knock, in the 38th over, he hit Drissell for a six over long on and then a straight four. In the following over, Montgomery got a single off Killeen to reach his 50 off 79 balls, next ball Singh launched Killeen (3 0 17 1) for 6 over mid-wicket. Top scorer Montgomery (54 off 84 balls, 3x4), who had used the sweep effectively throughout his innings, reverse swept the expensive Drissell (10-1-56-1) and was caught by Coughlin at short third man, 198 for 7 in the 40th over. For the first time in the game Durham were now favourites. Singh (25 off 26 balls) was then well caught at short mid-wicket by Dickson off Borthwick, 206 for 8 in the 43rd over.
Enter Zak Chappell, after 4 dot balls, he hit Borthwick for 6 over mid-wicket off the last delivery of the 45th over. The previous over was the 10th of the innings for Rushworth (2 for 49), Durham had now bowled out their two main bowlers.
Chappell lobbed Borthwick (8-0-35-1) to the mid-wicket ropes as substitute Bushnell lost it in the sun , 4 runs to Notts, and only five runs now wanted off 3 overs. Maddinson (5 0 31 0) bowled the 48th over, Hutton got a single off the first ball. Two dot balls followed, then Chappell and Hutton collected singles. Chappell got the winning hit chipping the ball over long on getting the required two. Notts 227 for 8 after 48 overs had won by 2 wickets with 2 overs to spare. The cool Chappell 16 not out off 18 balls with Hutton undefeated with 8 off 19 balls. Notts had won a pulsating encounter to move one place up the table to fourth. Next up, The Bears at Edgbaston on Wednesday. MAG

Hopefully Liam Patterson-White will return after his non-first class outing with England Lions (what a wasted exercise that was), to boost our batting and more importantly, our bowling.
Opponents Durham have lost the only points they had (pending an appeal) owing to disciplinary inflingements - that secret, yet in full view world of interactions between players and umpires that never gets spoken about so any penalties arising appear to come out of the blue to the spectators.
