Warwickshire Bears RLODC at Edgbaston Loss

SCRAPPY NOTTS FALL SHORT AT EDGBASTON

Dropped catches prove costly despite Patterson-White Blitzkreig

Despite a heroic 17 ball 43 from Liam Patterson-White and significant contributions from Haseeb Hameed (51) and Ben Slater (47) Notts lost an exciting truncated 34 overs game by the narrow margin of 14 runs at a dank Edgbaston today.

After heavy overnight rain and very light intermittent morning drizzle play finally got going at 1330 with Notts winning the toss and inserting Warwickshire. Dane Paterson came into the Eleven for James Hayes. The floodlights were on for the most of the contest and the temperature was further reduced by a chilly wind.

Hutton (City End) and Paterson opened the bowling. Sibley (1) played on to Paterson's second delivery, 3 for 1. Yates was dropped on 1 by Schadendorf off Paterson, an easy chance which had a huge cost to Notts as Yates was to hit 46 off 45 balls. Warwickshire completed the 7 over powerplay on 33 for 1.

Chappell and Patterson-White replaced Paterson and Hutton for the 8th and 9th overs respectively. Rhodes hit successive boundaries off Chappell as the Bears reached 50 in the 10th over. Chappell's two overs went for 18 runs, so Hameed brought on Montgomery. Yates swept Patterson-White for 6 over square leg in the 13th over. The following over Rhodes hit Montgomery (2 0 20 0) for 6 over mid-wicket, 12 off the over. Singh bowled the 15th over, and a boundary for Rhodes brought his 50 in 43 balls and the following ball was reverse swept for four to bring up the Warwickshire 100. Yates was leg before for Singh for 46, 116 for 2 in the 17th over. The 2nd wicket partnership had raised 113 runs. Burgess (4) was caught at long leg by Singh off Paterson, the youngster misjudging the effort, but eventually catching the ball low down on the dive, 123 for 3 off 18 overs. Chappell returned and was launched for six by Rhodes over mid-wicket. Pandya was dropped on 6 by Montgomery at long leg off Patterson-White (7 0 44 0) in the 21st over, another easy chance spilled and at great cost once more with Pandya eventually dismissed for a 28 ball 37. The Indian all-rounder got injured whilst batting but carried on without a runner, he did not however bowl during the Notts reply. Rhodes hit Chappell for a huge straight six. Pandya hit Hutton for 6 over square leg, Patterson-White misjudging the flight of the ball and neither taking the chance or preventing a six. Rhodes got to his maiden List A hundred with a straight six off Hutton (6 0 39 0), 17 off the 26th over.

Singh returned for the 28th over and Rhodes hit his first delivery for six over square leg. Rhodes (113 off 85 balls, 8x4, 5x6) finally fell to catch on the mid-wicket ropes by James off Singh (5 0 53 2), 213 for 4 in the 28th over. Pandya (37) perished to catch at long off by James off Chappell, 215 for 5 in the 29th over. Brookes (3) fell skying a delivery from Chappell and Montgomery taking an excellent diving catch running from mid-on, 234 for 6 in the 31st over. Lamb along with 17-year-old Kai Smith adding an unbroken 37 off the final 3.2 overs of the innings bowled by Paterson (7 0 51 2) and Chappell (7 0 61 2). Smith hit the final delivery of the innings for a straight 6 off Paterson. Warwickshire 271 for 6 off 34 overs, an over par total. Dropped catches had proved to very costly for Notts.

Yates (City End) and Hannon-Dalby opened the bowling. In the 4th over, Slater pulled Hannon Dalby for 6 over square leg. Norwell came on in the 5th over and Slater pulled him for a legside six. A slower delivery from Hannon Dalby fooled somewhat subdued Budinger (23 off 22 balls) and was caught on the mid-wicket ropes by Yates, 42 for 1 in the 6th over. Notts completed the powerplay on 48 for 1.

Garrett came on in the 8th over. Schadendorf (16) was caught on the run at wide mid-on by Rhodes off Norwell, 65 for 2 in the 11th over. Schadendorf clearly not a number three, his scratchy innings taking 25 balls.

Rhodes came on for the 14th over and Slater hit him for 6 over square leg. Slater (47 off 28 balls, 2x4, 3x6) was caught on the backward square leg ropes by Smith off Brookes, 100 for 3 in the 15th over. Slater out just as he was accelerating.

Hameed and Montgomery, neither big hitters added 52 in 7 overs, but failed to reach the ropes sufficiently although Hameed did hit Garrett for successive boundaries in the 21st over, 12 off that particular over. Montgomery (21) cover drove Brookes for four, but was dismissed next ball caught by Yates on the mid-wicket ropes, 153 for 4 in the 22nd over. Notts now needed 118 off 12.3 overs. Patterson-White seemingly turned the game with a blistering 17 ball innings including 2 fours and 4 sixes. Garrett bowled a beamer to Patterson-White , who hit the free hit for six, 18 off the 23rd over. Norwell came back, his first ball went for a straight six and Patterson-White then hit his two successive sixes over mid-wicket, two twos followed, the last delivery went for 4 through extra cover, 26 off the over and 44 off two overs. The 200 came up in the 25th over but Hannon-Dalby conceded only three runs off the over. Hameed got to 50 off 45 balls with a single off Garrett but three balls later Patterson-White (43 off 17 balls) holed out to Brookes on the point ropes, 206 for 5 in the 26th over. Notts 66 short of their target with 8.3 overs remaining were after Patterson-White's blitzkrieg marginal favourites.

Hameed (51 off 48 balls, 4x4) fell to a brilliant catch behind the stumps by Burgess diving high to his right off Rhodes, 209 for 6 in the 27th over which only went for two singles. Singh joined James in the middle and hit Brookes for 6 over square leg, 13 off the over off the 28th over

Singh hit Rhodes for 4 through long leg but only six runs off the 29th over. James was caught at extra cover by Lamb off Garrett, 237 for 7 off 30 overs. The ball going at a great pace but to straight to the fielder who caught it at the second attempt, a yard either side at it would have gone to the ropes. James out for a run a ball ten.

Hutton went for a golden duck caught on the mid-wicket ropes off the returning Hannon-Dalby, 7 off the 31st over Singh swung and missed to three balls from Rhodes then ran a two, then he slashed a boundary behind the wicket. He was caught at long off by substitute Shaikh off Rhodes for 25, 250 for 9 off 32 overs. Paterson and Chappell scampered seven off the penultimate over bowled by Hannon-Dalby. Notts now needed an unlikely 15 off the last over which was bowled by Rhodes. Paterson attempted to run a bye off the first ball but keeper Burgess threw the ball to the bowler with Paterson (2) short of his ground. Notts 257 all out off 33.1 overs with Chappell 8 not out. Hannon-Dalby 2 for 42 off 7 overs proved to be the most economical of the match. The Bears fielding was much slicker than Notts and never has the old adage “catches win matches” hold true, Bears held theirs, Notts dropped the crucial ones.

Notts now lie a distant fifth in the table, they have to win their last two games and hope the other results go for them. MAG

Squads:

With James Pattinson gone AWOL (or at least absent without a reason made public to the paying supporters) and most of the seniors away milking the ECB cash cow, if not actually playing anything that approximates to cricket; those left behind have been included in Secret Squirrel's squad to travel to Birmingham.

Sol Budinger
Ben Slater
Dane Schadendorf
Haseeb Hameed
Matt Montgomery
Lyndon James
Liam Patterson-White
Fateh Singh
Brett Hutton
Zak Chappell
James Hayes
Dane Paterson
Toby Pettman
Ben Martindale

not in the listed squad, but more than likely to travel also, Sammy King.

The Bears squad: Will Rhodes, Ethan Brookes, Michael Burgess, George Garatt, Olly Hannon-Dalby, Manraj Johal, Matt Lamb, Liam Norwell, Krunal Pandya, Hamza Shaikh, Dom Sibley, Kai Smith, Rob Yates

With Ben Duckett showing that he's the form player on this island, and his Test status not far off being restored (surely), Joey Evison's choice to move to Kent looks (even more) like a hasty mistake; he could have been part of this exciting squad. Joey shutting the door on Notts opens the opportunity for others however, and should Duckett become unavailable to Notts, it's Matt Montgomery looking to be the one now in that pole position to benefit. We have have got some really talent lads here (in this squad), we really need to hang on to them!

  1. Now Mr Moores has to put his words into action and back them to the hilt with first team cricket. Those who are grazing on the ECB pastures may come to regret opening the door and forcing Notts to let slip the young uns. There seems to be a lot more running in between the wickets and outfield without some of our more seasoned stalwarts. It’s great to see. More of the same pity it’s not at TB. But one thing at a time.

  2. Definitely need to keep these talented young players but if they're not going to be regular players until they're 22 or 23 Notts could well lose more with this ridiculous stone age thinking

  3. Anyone else noticed Warwickshire went over there allocated time at the end but nothing changed

  4. Agree re time over - but then perhaps a lack of interest in procedures from ECB. Annoying that conditions cleared up, but the teams found it good enough to practice flat tack. To my mind this could have happened indoors and having paid £15 for a mainly second eleven match we would have got a bit more value. Phil Cooper
