NCCC News: Annus Horribilis/Fergus O'Neill

20/12

On the day Nottinghamshire CCC finally admit Tom Moores will never make it as a proper wicket keeper, Peter Moores extends his run of defeats in the T20 format with just 4 wins in 21 now for the "Peter Moores Franchises" in 2024, starting this Big Bash as he did with the Blast 2024. P3 L3

Thanks Mick! No worries you can always rely on me to look after the boy!

More Robin Hood than Kevin?

Fergus O'Neill today 3-0-16-3 in blowing away of Hobart Hurricanes for 74. Of cause Outlaws will only have his services for the Championship in April owing visa restrictions.

Telegram from MAG

took 3 wkts in an over today and was mic'd up for second consecutive match- clearly the upcoming and rising star in Australian cricket...BREAK

he can only come for 30 days due to uk visa restrictions - this is the limit based on his domestic australian experience...BREAK

one international appearance would potentially mean he could come over for longer....STOP

ANNUS HORRIBILIS

One headline or clickbait comment from Pravda that you won't read is perhaps, "T20 Genius or Mastermind", in relation to the leadership of head coach Peter Moores in 2024. Whilst he maintains the full confidence of Director of Cricket, Peter's sides in the T20 competitions in both the global hemispheres have had an "Elizabethean annus horribilis" in 2024.  Yesterday's opening defeat for Moores' Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash registered the 13th calendar defeat for Peter's T20 teams this year. Since 2nd January there have been just FOUR victories for Moores' sides in the T20 format. There were 2 games lost to the weather for the Outlaws, if you recall.
Add to that defeat another loss today.

P20 - W 4 - NR 2 - L14. A Moores win in 20% of games - a Genius Mastermind of the format, he no longer appears to be, if he ever was...

Happy Birthday Peter Moores 62 yesterday too.

Talking about Peter Moores and thoughts inevitably turn nepotism, something Peter is now not alone in being guilty of in the sphere of cricket.

Rocky Flintoff selected for England Lions duty by his dad at the tender age of 16. A selection based on what? Certainly not on merit.

Notts have signed Fergus O'Neill, an Australian quick bowler with potential. Visa restrictions limited his time working in the UK to 28 days. He joins us for April, so by the time he has adjusted to our climate, he'll have backed his bags and returned home.

Pravda doesn't quite reveal Paterson's return

A brief biography of young O'Neill c/o MAG

O'Neill made his List A debut for Victoria on 8th March 2022 in a Marsh One-Day Cup match versus Western Australia at St Kilda. From 6th to 9th October 2022 he made his first-class debut for Victoria versus South Australia at the Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide. He took four wickets in the match with all four victims being current Australian Test cricketers - namely Travis Head (twice), Alex Carey and Nathan McSweeney.

In the 2023-24 Sheffield Shield he was the fifth highest wicket taker with 40 wickets @17.25. This performance saw him being awarded the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year at the Australian Cricket Awards, while he also cleaned up at Victoria's state awards with the Billy Lawry Medal for their Sheffield Shield Player of the Year, Dean Jones Medal for One-Day Player of the Year and the player-voted John Scholes Award. In Victoria's victory over South Australia at the Adelaide Oval in November 2023, O’Neill had match figures of 10-111 (5-28 (career-best), 5-83) and scored 25 and 23 helping his team to a narrow 23-run win. His first 50 Shield wickets came at a remarkable average of 21 - only three bowlers in the 21st century – Trent Copeland, Jackson Bird and Joel Paris – had reached this milestone quicker and with a lower average. In the same season, O’Neill appeared twice for Melbourne Renegades in the KFC Big Bash. He made his debut against the Hobart Hurricanes at the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne on 4th January 2024. He took two wickets, including the prize scalp of Ben McDermott, going on to also play in the Melbourne derby against the Stars. With his immense promise, he signed for the Renegades for a further two seasons.

In 2024-25 at the Great Barrier Reef Arena at Mackay he appeared for Australia A v India A. The Aussie second string won by seven wickets with O’Neill having second innings figures of 4-55. In early December he had match figures of 9-73 (5-51 and 4-22) when Victoria fell to a 23-run defeat to Queensland at the MCG. His record up to 9th December 2024 is given below. His highest first-class score is 70 not out made against New South Wales at the MCG in October 2023. MAG

Michael talks waffle and spin How sober is this man?

17/11

14/11

Mick Newell and his management team have again confirmed their own shortcomings and short-sightedness, in releasing Fateh Singh from his contract to allow him to sign a deal with Worcestershire. All the talk of youth and home developed players not stacking up again...

Pravda spin published last night

Yes this Nottinghamshire supporter is disappointed with the leadership of our club, again. What would a year long oan deal do to have harmed Fateh's development, but Notts being too understanding at their own expense. Fateh, in my opinion, will develop into an exciting, punishing (to the opposition) all rounder and Notts would have been better served with him in our team, than having him against us. Mr Newell remains void of ideas of where the team will be in two years time.

10/10

James Hayes has been rewarded for his patience by bagging a two year contract.

04/10

Confirmation that Conor McKerr has signed for Nottinghamshire on Pravda

this morning with a three year deal.

03/10

Dane Schadendorf and Sammy King have both been given a 12 month contracts at Notts.

LIONS' CALL

Dillon Pennington, Freddie McCann and Farhan Ahmed have all received an England Lions call up for the trip to South africa in November. Pravda spin

Finger-crossed it doesn't turn into something of a curse, as it has done for several Notts players in recent years: Matt Carter, Paul Coughlin and Zak Chappell to name just three.

No great surprise that Mull has announced his retirement from playing to concentrate on his coaching role. Pravda spin-it

11/09

So Dane Paterson isn't returning after his wife gave birth to their latest child, after all. That child now represents another ready-made excuse for Newell and you can hear him now; "we didn't know until the Chelmsford game", "an unexpected decision by the player", but the fact is he and Moores made the decision not to spend the budget that Lisa had given them on an overseas replacement for Paterson during his [Pato's] August into September absence months ago. It can hardly be a shock, not if you're being totally honest.

So Notts, it appears, have flown in the last Kiwi bowler left in New Zealand, one who hasn't turned his arm over in five months, so at least he should be fresh and injury free. Jacob Duffy also has experience of playing at both Canterburys, the one on South Island  NZ but also the one in Kent (see Pravda) which might prove useful next week.

10/09

The much delayed Notts 2s game at Gosforth sees Tom Moores' name appear in the XII. Bowlers include: Pettman, Hayes, Loten, Burrows (trialist), Hutton, Singh, Luke Young (Trialist from Cheshire see below)

Oops Tom, a three ball duck.

Congratulations to Dane Schadendorf with a timely century at that Gosforth game.

Olly Stone and Ben Duckett are in the England squad to tour Pakistan.

09/09

Olly Stone has obviously impressed Brendan McCullum and so has been included in the England ODI squad for the forthcoming series against you know who.

07/09

Perspective: how bad were we?

All four T20 Blast quarter-finals were won by the South Group county taking part. Moores Outlaws finished last of nine in the North Group, so does this make us the worst T20 county in 2024?

Peter Moores got so many aspects of the 2024 Blast campaign wrong: overseas recruitment, team selections, tactics, balance of different bowlers and player preparation to name just five. It's difficult to see how Newell could justify Moores keeping his job after such an inept display. But he won't have to justify his decision, he'll just carry on being accountable to no one.

We need a younger coach, someone who will free the players from batting with fear of failure, like we did for all but the last game at Headingley. We need leadership that never says die, gives the players some fight to the last attitude and the fans that never fading hope. It's not that many years ago when Notts were just like that. Since then Newell and Moores have dropped the ball and lost it in the long grass but neither have the courage to admit it.

So Mr Newell, we need less comfy, cosy familiarity at the top and have a more McCann-do attitude in 2025.

JUST STOP NEWELL

05/09

The Second XI friendly against Lancashire at Westhoughton CC has ended as a draw with no play possible on either the first (at Liverpool CC) or last days scheduled. Just 27 overs were possible on day 2. Lancashire 72/2

Pravda: Originally scheduled to be played at Liverpool CC, the fixture was moved to Westhoughton CC, Bolton, after the opening day was abandoned due to water on the playing surface

04/09

Where is Tom Moores?

There has been no reports of any injury, he missed the 2s game at Loughborough and he is also absent from the 2s game at Liverpool today.

When he was replaced as keeper (Clarke) at the beginning of the season, he shared wicket keeping duties with Dane Schadendorf in the Second XI; this hasn't happened this time (replaced by firstly Clarke and now Verreynne). So where is Tom Moores and is he still being paid by NCCC?

Happy Birthday Tom Moores, who turns 28 today

Josh Hull has been called-up to the England XI, congratulations to the young man. Farhan Ahmed has taken just three wickets less than Josh in his first class career of 2 games to date.

Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club Limited ?

Make what you will of this... (thanks to Richard Day for this find)

has it always been "Limited"?

02/09

Freddie McCann is the youngest Notts player to score a first-class 150

He was 19 years 134 days when he reached the milestone on Saturday, beating the previous record achieved by Arthur Carr on 12th August 1913 when he scored 169 v Leicestershire at Trent Bridge (20 years 83 days)

Many thanks to Chris O'Brien for confirming this information. MAG

29/08

Rumours circulating Trent Bridge today:

Fateh Singh will be joining Worcestershire on a permanent basis at the end of the season.

Luke Fletcher will be moving to the Nottinghamshire retirement facility, otherwise known as Derbyshire CCC, at the end of his current contract.

28/08

We all know that runs scored in the SEC count for very little unless your name is Tom and share the same surname as the Notts Head Coach, but for what it's worth; Fateh Singh scored a brisk (77 ball) century at Loughborough Town today. In the Head Coach's mind will be that Steven Mullaney had a brief six ball innnings, whilst Singh completed his century, so he'll be straight back into the first team on the strength of that...

Sammy King was absent owing to concussion protocols [hence Mullaney was drafted in to bat]

Confirmed - Kyle Verreynne

27/08

UNCONFIRMED

There is some suggestion that Notts will announce the signing of South African wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne soon, apparently.

Verreynne's stats don't read too shabby and he has just concluded playing in the West Indies, so shouldn't be under-cooked...

and like Dane Paterson, has a Western Providence connection.

This potential signing raises a few questions, however...

Sammy King suffered a helmet strike at Loughborough Town yesterday and was retired hurt not out, playing for the 2s against a Foxes 2s.

Larwood Certificate loaned to club to mark the 100th anniversary of the legend's debut for the county.

Pravda:
A piece of history has been presented to the Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club by Ashfield District Council, in honour of the centenary of the legendary Harold Larwood MBE's First-Class debut for Notts.

The historic certificate, presented to Nottinghamshire's Vice Chair Richard Stevenson by Councillors Arnie Hankin, Chris Huskinson and Tom Hollis, was originally gifted to Larwood following his first tour with England to Australia in 1928-1929, when he took 18 wickets on the way to a landmark 4-1 Ashes win for the Three Lions.

Regarded as one of England's greatest ever bowlers, the right-arm seamer took 1,247 First-Class wickets for Nottinghamshire - 92 for his country - and was honoured with an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 1993 for his services to cricket.

Marking the centenary of Larwood's First-Class debut - made against Northamptonshire at Trent Bridge on 20 August 1924 - the treasured item has been loaned to the club by Ashfield District Council, and will be on display in the Trent Bridge Pavilion from Thursday 29 August, when the Green and Golds welcome Surrey in the Vitality County Championship.

Vice Chair Richard Stevenson, who accepted the presentation of the certificate at Trent Bridge, said: “Harold Larwood is one of the greatest cricketers ever to play for Notts and for England, and I’m sure our members will be really interested to see this impressive tribute to his first successful Ashes tour.”

Olly Stone Playing for Pride

Notts have won just two of their 12 games in the competition so far this season.

It has been almost two decades since the Outlaws have won only two matches in the competition, doing so in both 2005 and 2004 when there were significantly fewer group games.

For Notts, the T20 campaign this year produced unwanted history when they managed a club record low total of 57 in their nine-wicket defeat by Birmingham Bears earlier in July.

That tally was the forth lowest produced by any county since T20 cricket became part of the domestic schedule in 2003.

Will there be any fall-out from these?

Who will take the blame?

  1. Club has been stagnating for quite a few seasons now, and even though we cherry pick our players from other teams, we still cant build a winning team. I get the strategy of buying in players if you cannot develop your own, but whoever is in charge of the young player pathway (Newell ?) needs to take responsibility. When was the last good player to come though for Notts.

Then even with buying in good players like Clarke, Slater, Stone, Hameed, etc we are average in the County champ, but really poor in 20/20. So is recruitment at fault as well.

And numerous younger players, Martindale, Montgomery, Moores, James are not developing into forceful imposing players. Is the coaching at fault.

Bottom line is the pathway, recruitment and coaching is poor, so should those responsible be accountable.

    1. I'm no apologist for Messers Newell and Moores and their army of coaches, but they would say "look at the players we've brought in and improved like Duckett, Pennington and Clarke - they were good before but coming to Notts has made them England ready". I think that they see that as their whole raison d'etre. Forget about making Notts a success.

Putting my Nottsview hat on, the player pathway failure over the past 20 years is the fault of Mick Newell. However, if the question was asked at the next forum about that failure, he would cite Martindale, Moores, James, Patterson-White, Fletcher, Hutton, Ball, Luke Wood and even Joey Evison all being examples that prove that his pathway has been a success. Note that not one of those names has made an impact over a number of years as a quality specialist batsman. Who was the last Notts academy graduate quality specialist batsman?

As regards T20, I don't think Peter Moores has a chuffin clue really; with Outlaws past success being thanks to forceful overseas leadership, like from Dan Christian and vastly experienced team members that pre-date Moores' Notts arrival like Patel and Hales. Peter Moores stint in the PSL in 2022 saw his team Karachi Kings finish bottom of the league and in the Big Bash 2023/24 his Melbourne Stars side came only 6th.

Moores' appointment is down to Mick Newell, who's quick to take the credit when things go well. But when we hit a bump in the road or in the case of this Blast season, a brick wall, Newell is invisble.

      Delete
    2. Correction, Newell hasn't been totally invisible during this lamented campaign: he crossed the pitch pre-match wearing his rainbow laces before the Bears mauling.

    Entertainers, who don’t now entertain
Comedians who are no longer funny 😁
. The list goes on .I suppose we all lose imagination , creativity,, drive and fresh ideas over a period of time.
Judging by recent events at TB , on and off the playing area it’s pretty easy to see MN and PM have lost the plot. Their team selections are like painting by numbers ! So predictable.

  9. Peter Moores has brought all of the flak onto himself, by being a stubborn misguided fool.
This obsession with sticking by his "knarled old pro's "approach has failed in spectacular fashion allied to his blatant favouritism towards his son, has made his position untenable.
All of this appears to be irrelevant, as it would appear that we are stuck with both of the Moores's ,and obviously the prat who extended his contract for at least another season.
First thing, Newell needs to sign up King on a 3 year contract as it runs our shortly, and his big hitting prowess, won't have gone unnoticed elsewhere. He looks awkward, but is a tall guy with long levers ,which are a weapon in limited overs cricket.
Secondly, negotiate a long term deal for McCann who looks a real prospect, with his ability to judge length early, with a good eye, and a range of shots both sides of the wicket.
Thirdly, take team selection away from Peter Moores for the remainder of his contract, as this will improve the fortunes of the side.

We don’t want another Evison scenario where we lose a good prospect needlessly.
I wonder if deep down , Peter Moores has lost his vision and confidence ?
Also his players must now be wondering if he is up to the job ?
How can Moores now enter the Notts dressing room and look players in the eye and carry on spouting his usual robotic clap trap ?
Last nights success could easily have occurred much earlier in the Blast campaign and produced different results - viz more victories!?
We could , and should , be in the Blast quarter finals what with the vast resources available to the Head Coach and Director of Cricket .

    1. Even worse than that. Not only did we not qualify we actually finished BOTTOM of our weaker group and were out of contention to qualify after less than half the group games. It's an absolutely staggering decline, in other years when we've not qualified (not many of them) it's always gone to the last or penultimate game.

  24. Again it's now 3 out of 4 years
That there will be no representation
From from northern half of the blast on finals day, so it's shows how bad Notts were & by finishing bottom of the northern section & becoming laughing stock of the whole competition

  25. With all the inflated salaries of the management and coaching staff, add to that, the ever increasing back room staff, is it any wonder why the club is strapped for cash.
The fact that they expect members to pay in advance for 2025 membership with no early bird incentive offer, goes to prove how deluded and detached management are, from how the membership view the pathetic way the club has been in steady decline for the last 10 years.
If Notts get relegated, then membership numbers are likely to decline further. Maybe a lack of funds is the only way for the people we want rid of, and a few other hangers on to get the boot.
    We live in hope

    1. Strength of the opposition in competition has driven standards upwrds for most of the South Group. North Group counties have let standards slide or at best are overly dependent on overseas players with their erratic availability. Notts /Perer Moores guilty of complacency.

  27. On the Tom Moores theme.
Out for a blob today, for the seconds.
Schadendorf, who has never been given an opportunity to play 4 day cricket for reasons only known to Peter Moores , scored 118.
You should hang your head in shame Mr Moores.

  28. That might be a bit harsh. Anyone can get a duck at any point. But…..who will Notts pick when Verreynne is absent later in the month???????

    Tom?
    Clarke and an extra batsman?
    Dane??

  29. I do have a little sympathy for old Tom. Really not good enough but his Dad makes it tough for him. The situation can't go on into next season but no first class county will touch him. So it's a big problem with him having a year left contract wise. It's prob his last one anywhere.

  30. This shambolic player fiasco is down to
One person & that's Teflon the DCO
He's in total charge of all cricket matters
At Nottinghamshire including the player budget & recruitment of all players

  31. To everyone do not renew your membership until after the AGM most will want to but there's no incentive to do so
Let these 🤡 wait until April

  32. Fully agree. You have nothing to lose. But cash flow wise they will.

  33. Nice idea except, this year they didn't allow members into the AGM until they (the faceless minions of the CEO) had checked on a laptop that you were indeed a paid-up 2024 member. People were turned away, even when they promised not to vote on anything.

  34. Don't be bullied into early. Membership. No members no money. They would be forced to make changes. Or make like sheep!

    OH DEAR!
Have we jumped the gun regarding Dane?
Let’s hope he DOES sign for another season at TB .
With Fletch no longer with us then the Dane is wanted by us more than ever ?

  37. 81 NOT OUT
No four day Champ cricket at TB between Aug 1st and 24 th Sept !
    Members being shortchanged?
Also the first FOUR HOME championship games are completed by 12th May
Truly awful home fixtures for the red ball cricket fans as two 5O over HOME Metro Games are played AWAY at the Fretwell Centre .
Is this going to be as good as it ever gets for the 4 day fans ?

  39. From Pravda :
"In all, Nottinghamshire’s men are set to play 39 days of cricket (28 Rothesay County Championship, 7 Vitality Blast, 4 Metro Bank One Day Cup) at home - including two 50 over fixtures at the John Fretwell Centre, Sookholme."
So, Notts home matches, then ? There are 180+ days of the season, of which 37 have Notts playing at Trent Bridge. Not very good, to say the least. From late July to late September, just 2 out of about 60 days.

    1. On first release of the fixtures: Outlaws away fixture with Falcons in the T20 was at the Incora County Ground (as you would expect). In August Notts play at the same venue but the name of that venue (on Pravda) had reverted to its 2020 sponsor's name Pattonair County Ground.
Then followed a lot of googling to see if Derbyshire had done a deal to use both names during the season for different competitions - Pattonair being the same company as Incora but following corporate goings-on Incora was decided to be the name blah blah - but no Pravda had gone into some time loop with their copy and pasting.
We that is what I thought had occurred.
However, now Pravda have gone back and amended the MBC fixture venue. The Derby ground is now listed as the "County Ground" - coincidentally what Nottsview always calls it. Mini screen shots above in the post now. Thank-you for reading my initial question "Anonymous". Now my question is, is Pravda correct now and times are hard in the aerospace industry and ground sponsorship is being cut back?

  41. Thanks, and could be so, re cut back.

    1. It was called Pattonair in 2019, but following merger in March 2020 the company became Incora. I can't find a news item where Incora are cutting back, soit looks probable that Pravda Media Team made the wrong copy and paste (from the 2019 win at the Pattonair County Ground), were told that they'd got the wrong name and so deleted the Pattonair bit.

  42. At last good news. Bad for Dane though. Moores Jr sure to play all Blast games which is ridiculous.
