Yorkshire Vikings Vitality T20 Blast at Headingley Win 2 pts Report

SMASHING WIN AT LONG LAST

Criticism of Moores' intransigence vindicated with sparkling, overdue debuts from McCann and King

Notts finished off their woeful T20 campaign with a welcome 28 run victory over the Yorkshire Vikings at Headingley last night. The win knocked the home side out of the competition and was set up by the two Notts debutants Freddie McCann and Sammy King who added 87 in 7.4 overs for the second wicket and a quickfire 21-ball 50 from the previous out of form Jack Haynes with Notts surpassing their previous best score in this year's tournament by 34 runs.

Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bowl on a belter of a pitch, the best that Notts have played on in white ball cricket this season. Notts left Martindale and Montgomery out of the Eleven. Malan was not in the Yorkshire team which did not include England pair Bairstow and Rashid either.

Moriarty (Howard Stand End) conceded four singles in the opening over. Clarke was bowled by Cliff for 2, 6 for 1. Three runs off the second over. The two youngsters that Moores was so reluctant to play then stole the show to leave the coach with an extremely red face. King lofted Moriarty for a straight four and McCann repeated the shot, 11 off the third over. McCann cover drove Cliff to the ropes, seven off the fourth over. King hit Thompson to the square leg boundary. McCann carved a short ball from Thompson for six over backward point and then next ball for six over wide long on. The following ball raced to the third man ropes from the left hander's bat. McCann lofted Bess for four off mid off. Notts 53 for 1 off 6 overs.

King was dropped on 20 an extremely difficult caught and bowled chance to the expensive Chohan (3 0 41 1), eight off the 7th over. Bess went for five in over number eight. King then went into overdrive hitting three successive sixes. King who looks a far better white ball prospect than Martindale hit Chohan for a straight six. The following ball was a full toss that King deposited for six over cow corner. King made it three sixes on the trot with another six through mid wicket; 22 off the 9th over. McCann hit Thompson for four through backward point. King (44 off 25 balls, 2x4, 3x6) was caught at long on by Wharton off Thompson, 93 for 2. He should now get a regular slot in the Metro Bank 50 over line up. Eight runs off the 10th over.

Haynes swept Moriarty for four, six runs off the 11th over. Haynes hit Bess for successive fours through mid wicket and square leg. Three balls later Haynes swept the off spinner for four through backward square leg and then hit him for a straight six, 23 off the 12th over. McCann (48 off 32 balls, 5x4, 2x6) perished caught at long off by Luxton off Chohan, 125 for 3. Haynes swept Chohan for four through long leg. The next ball a dreadful long hop was dispatched for four by Haynes; 11 off the 13th over. Moores hit Hill for four through mid wicket and then to the extra cover ropes twice in three deliveries. Notts 150 for 3 off 14 overs. Haynes hit Moriarty (4 0 37 0) for consecutive sixes over long on and mid wicket. A four through extra cover brought him to his 50 off 20 balls; 16 off the 15th over. Moores hit Cliff for four through mid wicket and a straight six. Haynes (50 off 21 balls, 6x4, 3x6) was caught by Wharton running back from mid wicket off Cliff. Notts 177 for 4 off 16 overs.

Moores (30 off 15 balls, 4x4, 1x6) was caught at extra cover by Masood off Thompson, 179 for 5. Patterson-White (1) was bowled by Thompson, 181 for 6. Only 4 off the 17th over. Bess (4 0 40 0) went for just five singles in the 18th over. Harrison hit Thompson (4 0 44 3) for 6 over square leg and then scooped him for four; 13 off the 19th over. James (5) was caught on the mid wicket ropes by Thompson off Cliff who finished with career best bowling figures; 199 for 7. Fletcher was dropped off his first ball by Masood at mid on but was run out going for the single. Harrison (19) hit the next delivery for a straight six but fell next ball caught right on the square leg ropes by Thompson off Cliff (4 0 31 4), 205 for 9. Farooqi hit the final delivery of the innings for a straight four. Notts with an extremely competitive 209 for 9 off 20 overs with Farooqi on 4 not out and Stone 0 not out.

With Derbyshire and Leicestershire both struggling. Yorkshire knew that a win would take them into the quarter finals Farooqi (Howard Stand End) conceded six plus a leg bye from the opening over. Luxton (12) guided Stone's first ball to the third man boundary. The next ball went for four through square leg. He fell off the following ball Stone having him caught by Patterson-White at mid on, 15 for 1. Nine off the 2nd over. Wharton had a streaky boundary just lofting Farooqi over McCann's head at cover for four; nine off the 3rd over. Lyth hit Fletcher's opening delivery for four over mid wicket. Lyth (8) was caught at deep backward square leg by King off Fletcher; 31 for 2. Masood went for a golden duck skying Fletcher to McCann at point; 31 for 3, six off the 4th over. Wharton hit Stone for four through mid on. Two balls later, Stone was hit for six by Wharton over mid wicket. Hill hit Stone for four through point; 17 off the 5th over. Wharton was dropped on 19 a caught and bowled chance to Fletcher. Wharton hit Fletcher for four through mid off. Yorkshire 57 for 3 off 6 overs.

Hill hit James for four through mid wicket and the lofted him for four through backward square leg; 11 off the 7th over. Hill (15) was bowled by the frugal Harrison making room, 71 for 4. Two runs plus a leg bye off the 8th over. Ferreira hit James for a straight six; 9 off the 9th over. Wharton bottom edged Harrison for four; eight of the 20th over. Yorkshire 88 for 4 off 10 overs.

Ferreira hit Patterson-White for four over extra cover and then next ball for six over long off, 14 off the 11th over. The slow left armer was not to bowl again. Ferreira (22) hit Harrison into the night sky with Stone taking the catch on the long on ropes, 105 for 5, four off the 12th over. Notts now heading for victory with the home fans going silent.

Wharton lofted Stone for 4 over fine leg; seven off the 13th over. Harrison (4 0 19 2) went 6 off his last over. Wharton got to his 50 off 42 balls with a single off James. Thompson pulled James for six over long leg, 10 off the 15th over. James (3 0 30 0) then went off injured with what looked to be a upper body injury. A worrying one for Notts as they have a very sparse seam bowling resource for the 50 over competition.

Farooqi returned and had Wharton (52) caught at extra cover by Clarke, 132 for 6. Four off the 16th over. Thompson hit Fletcher for six over long on. Fletcher bowled a wide and a no ball. Thomson hitting the free hit for four through backward point; 17 off the 17th over. Thompson hit Farooqi (4 0 32 1) for six over mid wicket and then edged him for four over Moores' head. With 13 balls left the cut off time had elapsed and Notts had to have five men in the ring for the rest of the game. Thompson hit Stone for six over long off. Bess hit Stone (4 0 44 1) for four through extra cover; 13 off the 19th over and 34 needed to win off the last over. Thompson hit Fletcher for four through Martindale at fine leg and reached his 50 off 29 balls. Fletcher (4 0 36 2) though only went for five off the last over. The game was completed at 21:56 with Yorkshire on 181 for 6 with Thompson on 50 and Bess on 7. They had an unbroken 49 for the 7th wicket off 26 balls.

Notts finished bottom of the Northern Section with a much inferior net run rate compared to Worcestershire. A team in transition, they badly missed Duckett and were hampered by Hales being so out of the form and who went to Sri Lanka after 8 games. The coach though should take considerable blame for sticking with the same side for far too long when it was blindingly obvious that better alternatives were available from his local player pool. Notts fielded four Notts born players last night plus Patterson-White who has played for Notts through all age group levels last night. The glass ceiling needs to be smashed for good. MAG

NOTTSVIEW WOULD LIKE TO ISSUE AN APOLOGY TO PETER MOORES; ON 7 JULY NOTTSVIEW CLAIMED THAT PETER MOORES DID NOT RETURN TO THE DUG-OUT FOR THE BEARS’ BRIEF INNINGS AND IMPLIED THAT HE WAS HIDING AWAY FOLLOWING THE OUTLAWS PATHETIC PERFORMANCE WITH THE BAT THAT AFTERNOON. FOLLOWING MORE RECENT MATCHES VIEWED ON THE STREAMING SERVICES AND ON JAG’S PHOTOGRAPHS (VIEWABLE ON HARRY BUTLER DAFT FACEBOOK) IT IS CLEAR THAT PETER MOORES ROUTINELY DOES NOT SIT IN THE DUG-OUT WHEN NOTTS ARE BOWLING, PERHAPS PREFERRING TO HIDE BEHIND A SOFA, LIKE THE REST OF US.

19/07

Perhaps someone different will be carrying the drinks tonight?

Outlaws squad:

The set in stone ten are -

Ben Martindale
Joe Clarke
Jack Haynes
Lyndon James
Matt Montgomery
Tom Moores
Liam Patterson-White
Calvin Harrison
Olly Stone
Fazalhaq Farooqi

plus

Luke Fletcher
Sammy King
Freddie McCann
Rob Lord

Toby Pettman must have spilled the drinks on an occasion as he has been omitted from the named squad for tonight.

Yorkshire go into this last game with a vague hope of still qualifying for a quarter final place, as explained in the link.

Have Notts anything left to lose?

18/07

For this crop of Outlaws:

Long gone is the T20 Blast 2024 quarter-final qualification.

Gone is the players' confidence; for many it's shattered and will take a good run in the Metro Bank Cup to get any sort of self belief and form back at all. We can ill afford any knock-on into the Championship as well.

Gone is much of the players' pride. It's not so much the NINE defeats, it's the nature of most of those defeats that hurts the club.

Gone is any belief that this new captain is the best man for the job. It's affected his batting, he doesn't appear to have a plan and if he does , it's the wrong one. He or his advisors don't appear to trust certain bowlers and put too much trust in others that have been unable to deliver repeatedly, there's no clear strategy with the batting - for such a "settled" side no one knows their roles/ their jobs as we've been always fire-fighting, battling just to survive and last out twenty overs. To escape the power play with eight wickets intact has been a rarity this season. Whatever happened to the batting side's advantage during the powerplay? We've lost the ability to clear the infield in those first 6 overs.

Gone is the head coach's credibility.

Gone is supporters'patience in the management of our club.

You could say that only thing left for Notts to lose is this last match. But, win or lose what diffference does it make anyway?

So how can almost a whole team lose form and confidence so completely and all at the same time?

It clearly isn't the fault of individual players, because that would mean it's just very bad luck and coincidence that has brought us to this point.

As anyone who has ever read a detective or thriller novel will know, there's no such thing as coincidence.

It's mismanagement that's at fault here. At any other club and in any other sport as well, P45s would be flying about. In a results based industry, abject failure gets what it deserves...

The coach's: mollycoddling, we're all working hard, so it'll all fall into place soon, the toothfairy will give us another win approach HASN'T WORKED, look at the league table!

Notts still do have something left to lose though, I suppose we could lose our Head Coach, but would that be a bad thing?

  2. The definition of insanity doing the same things ( and picking the dame players for every game ) and hoping things will change
Why no Sam King or Fateh Singh ? Maybe time for a clear out at the top

  7. Well how long did that take to sink in with the advice from so many members
    That the side needed changing
& there not paid north of 150k a year
    To make that call
    Totally embarrassing

PRTER MOORES AND CO hang your heads in shame!
Playing virtually the same losing side match after match has shown your judgement is flawed and you are simply yesterdays man earning a nice crust on the memory of past achievements .For gods sake clear your desk and resign and spare us the forthcoming woffle and self serving meaningless clap trap .

A cracking write up and analysis of last nights match .
    Thanks Dave.
PS . What will Peter Moores be thinking this morning when eating his cornflakes?
How could he get things so wrong all season with his Blast selections.
Did he actually say last year that some of the Second 11 team were far too young to be given a chance in the First 11?

    1. Anyone younger than his Tom, is too young and will be inconsistent and unreliable so he can't take the chance.

  10. Every Pravda match report amplifies anything positive done by Tom Moores. My theory is that Mrs Moores is now Pravda chief writer. One error in the article for this game however, it has Notts scoring only 109, not even Mrs Moores could believe we passed 199.
