RECKLESS KENTIPULATION HANDS NOTTS SECOND WIN OF SEASON

Four wicket haul for debutant Kiwi as Kent are relegated with ten wicket defeat to Notts

Notts sent Kent to the Second Division thrashing them by 10 wickets in glorious sunny conditions at Canterbury today.

On a flat pitch the Kent batsmen instead of playing themselves in went for their shots from the word go and Notts cashed in. Off the last delivery of the opening over, Muyeye (60) summoned up his inner Budinger and mistimed an attempted pull shot off Duffy, skying the ball to keeper Schadendorf, 91 for 1 after 21 overs. The Kent 100 came up in the 24th over with three by Bell-Drummond off James. Bell-Drummond hit Duffy for consecutive boundaries in the 25th over. In the 26th over, Compton (32) was adjudged lbw to James, 115 for 2. Leaning fell for a three ball duck Duffy getting one to move away and Schadendorf taking a brilliant diving catch in front of Clarke at first slip, 116 for 3. Leaning playing a poor shot with the bat well away from his body.

Lord came on from the Nackington Road End for the 30th over and with his third delivery had Denly slashing to McCann at second slip, 133 for 4. Another dreadful shot. Bell-Drummond had his stumps detonated by a delivery that kept low from Duffy, 133 for 5 in the 31st over. In the next over the procession followed, Finch (3 ball duck) was brilliantly caught low down to his right by Schadendorf off Lord, 134 for 6. Schadendorf performing excellently throughout the contest.

James switched to the Pavilion End for the 35th over. Parkinson (9) swept two fours off Farhan but attempting a third boundary edged to McCann at leg slip, the first wicket for Farhan, 156 for 7 in the 40th over. With Notts having an over rate of minus four Hameed was forced to go to an all spin attack up to lunch McCann coming on for the 41st over. Evison launched McCann for 6 over square leg. Kent 196 for 7 off 52 overs at lunch with Evison on 25 and Jordan on 24.

Kent reached 200 in first over after lunch bowled by Duffy. Jordan hit Duffy for six over square leg in the 55th over. A single for Evison off Farhan in the 56th over brought the scores level but later in the same over Jordan (32) was lbw on the back foot to the off spinner , 208 for 8. Gilchrist (3 ball duck) had his middle stump removed by Duffy, 209 for 9 in the 57th over. This proved to be the icing on the cake for Duffy (4 for 60) who bowled much better in the second innings having blown away the cobwebs from the first innings.

Evison hit Farhan (2 for 53) for a straight six in the 64th over. Lord (3 for 42) replaced Duffy for the 64th over and with his first delivery had Evison (42) caught by substitute Patterson-White at cover Kent 230 all out off 64.1 overs. Farhan and Lord once again making significant contributions It left the reporter having to summon up his inner Frampton and Marriott and eat humble pie! Kent had proved that league tables don't lie and produced a wooden spoon performance throughout. Literally in a league of their own. The follow on was completely justified!

Notts needed 23 to win off 145 overs. Gilchrist (Pavilion End) and Jordan shared the new ball. Slater took two boundaries off Gilchrist, 11 off over number 3. Slater hit the first delivery of the 4th over to the backward point ropes. Two balls later at 1425 Slater hooked Jordan for six over long leg. Notts 28 for 0 off 3.3 overs with Slater on 22 and Hameed on 6, Notts had won by 10 wickets and take 23 points from the fixture. MAG

MAN-DOWN NOTTS BAFFLINGLY  ENFORCE FOLLOW-ON

Kent trail Notts by 123 runs with all their second innings wickets standing at the end of the second day at Canterbury.

In cloudy conditions first thing, Notts obtained their fourth batting point in the opening over. But disappointingly lost their last 4 wickets for seven runs in 27 balls. Notts reached 400 with Schadendorf hitting Garrett (Nackington Road End) to the third man ropes. In the 101st over, Fletcher on 19 was dropped by Leaning at slip off Garrett. Garrett though got his man in his following over bowling Fletcher (22) who shouldered arms to a delivery that moved in, 426 for 7 in the 103rd over. Next over, Lord was lbw to Gilchrist for a duck, 427 for 8. In the 106th over, Farhan (2) lost his off stump to Gilchrist, 431 for 9. Jordan picked up the final wicket with his fourth ball, Schadendorf (29) holing out to deep mid off with Bell-Drummond taking the catch. Notts 433 all out off 106.4 overs, Duffy 2 not out. Gilchrist (4-101) leading the bowling for Kent.

Fletcher (Pavilion End) struck with his fifth delivery having Compton (4) leg before, 5 for 1. Duffy went for nine in his opening over including two no balls and a further 12 in over number two including yet another no ball. Muyeye (10) played a dreadful shot guiding Fletcher straight to Lord on the square leg ropes, 34 for 2 in the 5th over. A boundary for Bell-Drummond off Duffy took Kent to 50 in the 8th over. After a disappointing opening spell Duffy (4 1 29 0) made way for James. Kent 60 for 2 off 13 overs at lunch with Bell-Drummond on 22 and Leaning on 9.

After a cloudy morning, the sun appeared after the interval James was getting the ball to move around in an excellent post lunch spell and got Bell-Drummond (28) to edge one to Schadendorf, 80 for 3 in the 18th over. After an opening spell of 9 2 38 2 Fletcher was replaced by Lord from the Pavilion End. Fletcher subsequently left the field injured and apart from fielding briefly for one over, never reappeared. It is believed he will not bowl again in the match. There was a stoppage when Joe Denly (5) was hit on the helmet from a Lord delivery. He fell next ball edging Lord to Schadendorf, 89 for 4 in the 21st over. Evison was dropped 1 by McCann diving to his left at second slip off James in the 22nd over. This proved a costly error as Evison eventually top scored and played a classy innings. He has been sadly missed by Notts.

A fast short ball from Lord shot up and all a surprised and confused Leaning could do whilst trying to evade it was to edge it through to Schadendorf who took his third catch of the innings, 96 for 5 in the 23rd over. The ball of the day. The Kent 100 came up in the 24th over with Finch getting a two off James. Evison hit Lord for three boundaries in the 25th over which went for 14. Farhan replaced James for the 25th over and snaffled a wicket with his first ball having Finch (6) caught at short leg by Haynes, 119 for 6 in the 26th over. Notts leading by 314 runs at this point, but slowly lost their dominance for the remainder of the Notts as Kent led by Evison fought back well.

In a double bowling change, Duffy replaced Lord from the Pavilion End but still very rusty continued to be wayward, bowling a legside delivery which went for 5 wides in the 31st over. Successive boundaries by Jordan off Duffy took Kent passed 150 in the 33rd over. Lord replaced Duffy for the 35th over and was smashed for six by Evison over mid wicket. Lord was only given one over from the Pavilion End and was replaced by James. Farhan was tying down Jordan (23) and had him lbw in the 42nd over, Kent 182 for 7. A legside two for Evison off James took him to his 50 off 73 balls. Duffy returned for the 47th over. An on driven boundary by Evison off Farhan took Kent passed 200 in the 48th over. The prodding Parkinson (0) lasted 29 balls before being brilliantly caught by McCann low down at short leg, 210 for 8 in the 50th over. Gilchrist (4) lost his off stump to Duffy, 215 for 9 after 51 overs. Tea was thus delayed. Evison hit Farhan for a straight six in the 52nd over. Evison (76 off 106 balls, 8x4, 2x6) finally fell caught on the point ropes by Slater. Kent 225 all out off 55.3 overs. Garrett 0 not out with the outstanding Farhan with figures of 4 for 37. James bowled well, particularly when bowling from Nackington Road End, and deserved more than one wicket. Duffy bowled as one would expect having just come off a plane and having not bowled for months. He did though bowl with pace. Notts bowled far too many no balls (ten) and gave away far too many extras (43).

Tea was taken between the innings. With Fletcher injured, Lord clearly not used to bowling a lot of overs per innings and Duffy ring rusty, it came as a surprise when Notts enforced with Kent with 208 runs behind. They never looked like taking a wicket in the final session as Kent sped to 85 for 0 in 20 overs before bad light stop play with seven overs still to bowl at 1803.

Duffy (Pavilion End) and Lord shared the new ball with Muyeye hitting Lord for three boundaries in the second over. After three overs from the Nackington Road End, Lord was replaced by James. Lord then immediately switched ends with Muyeye hitting him for consecutive fours in the 9th over. In his following over, Muyeye hit Lord for six over mid wicket and next ball cover drove him to the boundary. Farhan came on for the 12th over and once again bowled with control and guile well beyond his 16 years. James returned for the 13th over. Muyeye raced to 50 in 49 balls with a single off James in the 19th over. When bad light stopped play the Zimbabwean stood on 55 and Compton on 22. With the pitch losing its pace it will down to Farhan to lead the victory charge. A role he would performed better in the fourth rather than the third innings

With Lancashire now strong favourites to beat Somerset, Notts cannot afford to lose this game which made the decision to enforce the follow on even more baffling. MAG

SLATER HEADS NOTTS INTO A COMMANDING POSITION

Notts had a profitable first day after being inserted by Kent on a cool and windy day at the St Lawrence Ground. They closed on a commanding 393 for 6 with Ben Slater leading the way with a magnificent 160 (off 217 balls, 22x4). He received good support from Haseeb Hameed (56 off 142 balls, 7x4) and Jack Haynes (62 off 108 balls, 5x4).

New Zealand debutant Jacob Duffy and Dane Schadendorf came into the Eleven replacing Patterson- White and Verreynne. Schadendorf's previous championship experience amounted to a single day's cricket versus Derbyshire in 2021 after coming into the game after Ben Duckett had received an unexpected England call up due to Covid hitting the England squad. [he did however also keep wicket in the Championship against Leicestershire at Grace Road in 2022, substituting for an injured Tom Moores]

Kent bowled erratically in the opening session failing to take a wicket in helpful bowling conditions with the ball moving in the air and off the pitch. There were numerous instances of both openers playing and missing but Notts rode their luck. Notts raced to 40 for 0 off 7 overs with West Indian right arm paceman Akeem Jordan proving very expensive (3 0 36 0) in his opening spell not helped by a spate of no balls. His third over went for 15 including two boundaries for Slater off successive balls and one for Hameed. Gilchrist replaced Jordan from the Pavilion End. The 50 partnership came up in the 9th over with Slater guiding Garrett to the third man boundary. Next over, Slater on 35 narrowly missed being run out being sent back by Hameed who had played the ball to the legside. In the 11th over, Slater was dropped on 41 by Leaning at second slip off Garrett. An easy chance and it proved to be a very expensive miss.

Evison replaced Garrett for the 13th over. Slater reached a boundary laden 50 off 49 balls (10x4) with two off Evison, aided by some sloppy fielding by Jordan, in the 15th over. Garrett switched ends for the 18th over. Jordan came on from the 19th over from the Nackington End. A cover driven boundary by Hameed off Garrett saw Notts passed 100 in the 20th over. Slater hit two boundaries off Gilchrist in the last over before lunch. Notts 134 for 0 at the interval off 28 overs with Slater on 84 and Hameed on 34. A very satisfying morning for Notts with Slater very much to the fore.

Notts added a further 137 in the middle session for the loss of three wickets. Gilchrist and Garrett were bowling straight after lunch. The Notts 150 came up in 31st over with a single for Slater off Garrett. A cover driven boundary for Slater off Gilchrist took him to his ton off 109 balls (18x4) in the 34th over. Hameed's 50 came off 113 balls via a four through third man off Jordan in the 37th over. Evison returned this time from the Pavilion End for the 38th over. Parkinson came on for the 42nd over. Evison switched ends once more for the 43rd over and in his second over of his new spell got a ball to jag back in and bowl Hameed (56), 196 for 1 in the 45th over. Slater cut a long hop from Parkinson to the boundary to bring up the Notts 200 in the 46th over. Gilchrist returned and with his first delivery of his new spell and had McCann (8) caught at second slip by Leaning, 212 for 2 in the 53rd over. There were suspicions that the ball did not carry to the former Kent skipper. A poor shot from Clarke (18) saw him caught at long leg by Gilchrist off Garrett, 247 for 3 after 58 overs. Notts reached their first batting point with two for Haynes off Jordan in the 59th over. Notts 271 for 3 off 64 overs with Slater on 146 and Haynes on 6.

Leaning and Parkinson made it an all spin attack after tea. Slater reached 150 off 201 balls with a single off Leaning in the 67th over. A two for Haynes off Leaning saw Notts to 300 in the 73rd over. Slater (160) was caught low down to his left at slip by Muyeye off Leaning. The vast majority of Slater's runs were on the offside particularly between point and cover. He has 911 championship runs @45.45 this season. Notts 313 for 4 in the 75th over. Haynes reached his 50 off 85 balls with a single off Parkinson in the 84th over. The new ball was taken with Notts 343 for 4 off 84 overs and a three for James off Garrett in the 85th over  took Notts to 350. Jordan replaced Garrett for  the 91st over. Gilchrist picked up Haynes (62) caught at first slip by Muyeye, 373 for 5 in the 92nd over. The seventh championship 50 off the season for Haynes but his top score remains his 77 in his debut innings versus Essex way back in early April. Nightwatchman Fletcher hit Jordan for two fours in the 93rd over. Evison replaced Gilchrist for the 94th over. James (34) was caught at first slip by Muyeye off Jordan, 385 for 6 in the 95th over. The umpires having to confer before confirming the dismissal, the ball just carrying to Muyeye. Schadendorf hit two fours off his opening five deliveries from Jordan. The last over of the day was a maiden bowled by Evison. Notts closing on 393 for 6 off 96 overs with Fletcher on 10 and Schadendorf on 8. After being put in Notts will be well pleased with their progress. Kent looked poor today failing to pitch the ball up often enough, giving away 37 extras (including 30 no balls) and with some average ground fielding. MAG

I don't think that there's much doubt that this game is a must win for both sides.

It's not the case that it's a must avoid defeat, it's a must win for both Kent and us.

Will Mr Moores' team selections reflect this?

  1. One thing for sure, the Teflon brigade will be firmly stuck to their seats inside the safety of the pavilion for this fixture.
By rights , those culpable of surrendering their wickets cheaply at Eseex should be jettisoned for this one. However, on this issue, Moores may struggle to make up a team.
Schadendorf should make a very belated debut, and King should replace the hapless Haynes.
More likely, Clarke will take the gloves, but if so, who will take the vacant batting spot.
It's all up for grabs. If Moores gets this one wrong, we can enjoy an early guy forks night, and we know who will be sitting on top of the bonfire.

  2. It will be a result wicket which
    Will be very spinner friendly
& you will certainly want to bat first

TERRIFIC EFFORT - by the Captain and Slater. 134-0 at lunch - thats a lot of runs in a first session . Can the momentum be kept going and 400/450+ total be reached and thus give us an excellent chance of a good result. Weather forecast is good for the whole 4 days. 😎🏏

  4. That's set the tone should be at least a winning draw
But to be honest Kent are shocking
    Bowling unit especially Jordan

  5. Great news that slater and Haynes have runs - I write rhis at 350-4 with 5 Varro t points looking on.

But let’s be careful. The Lancs game is quite advanced and they could emerge from that with a win and 19 points. Warwickshire aren’t out of their match either despite a low first innings score.

Out bowling attack doesn’t look the strongest …..let’s hope I eat my words later on!

We will know where we stand with Lancashire by the end of tomorrow.

Yes -a good observation about the fifth possible batting point . Notts should go for it . From previous experience Notts know to their cost how important a single batting/ bowling point can be at seasons end .

  9. May not matter in the end but to lose the last four wickets for seven runs is awful. Missed the batting point, and also a fairly low score for them to achieve the follow on

  10. Yet again and as everyone here knows, county cricket is the best kept secret as far as sporting drama is concerned. It’s close at the top and bottom of division one.
And close for Notts too. Can we force a winning position. Can Lancashire? End of today will reveal lots I think

  11. Fletch on his birthday, has shown that there is life in the old dog yet
Notts will miss his line and length discipline next season.

  12. Great to see Schadendorf serving up an exemplary performance behind the stumps.
It's verging on the criminal , that our one eyed, biased coach, has held back this lad's development by favouring his hapless son.
It's additionally unfair, that he is only getting one game this season ,when Verraynne returns to play against, Warwickshire.
Let's hope he is still at the club in 2025, and receives a deserved run in the team as first choice keeper.

  13. Have we done right putting them in again ?Is Fletch injured ?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Things starting to get very tense
Fletcher injured may not bowl again in this game
Very bad call not to insert Kent to follow on & bat them out of the game & guarantee at least a winning drew
I personally see Kent bat all day tomorrow
& setting Notts a total to win on the last day & now with Lancashire looking favourites
To win against Somerset get ready for a rollercoaster 2 days

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yes i see similar tbh . Notts batting last to win the game ? Don't fancy our chances if it's 200 plus . Could all be on the final game
Hope I'm all wrong on this btw

Yet again the neglected ( by many) 4 day game is serving up some cracking nail biting entertainment . So many balls are up in the air at the same time and several important outcomes could go either way.
Notts to win this one ?
Lancs to win their match ?
Very interesting two days cricket ahead and it appears the weather forecast is good with just late on bad light a probable problem.
Come on Notts - we NEED TO WIN THIS ONE !

  17. Yes we have left the gate open in what may be the barn door by the end of play tomorrow if we somehow contrive
To lose this game & never say never
It will be down to poor decision making
By not enforcing the follow on to kill the game off

  18. Notts did really well to bowl Kent out for 225.

It may turn out fine, but with 2 and a bit days left, why didnt Notts bat again, to put Kent completely out of the game? A draw would be guaranteed at worse.

Do you fancy Notts batting fourth...?

Hope they win for the sake of the coaches now. They will get slaughtered if they snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

    1. The kentish commentators did say yesterday, in trying to give themselves some crumb of comfort, that the Canterbury wicket does have a tendency to just flatten out and then deaden further as the days progress. Be assured, Mick will be driving his bus off a cliff if we blow this match. (at least on Nottsview he will).

  19. Agree totally . Very good points made

  20. I think the uncertain weather forecast or Friday, was influential in the decision to enforce the follow on.
It's likely Notts will have to bat again. Let's hope they make early inroads tomorrow.
Young Fathan will no doubt have a busy day with the ball in hand.

Well it’s all to play for. All results are possible . We need some early wickets this morning . Our hero 16 year old will be asked to bowl a lot of overs today especially with Fletcher being injured . Has he bowled his last ball for Notts? More than likely .
If Lancs win and Notts only draw then the final match of the season will be mighty interesting . It will be Goose Fair week with very unpredictable weather.

    ReplyDelete
  22. We need 2/3 wickets before lunch
On a overcast morning, if not we could be chasing around 250+ on the final day
It's a big call with your main bowler out of the game & not much left in the locker
Could be a very long day in the field for Notts

  24. 7 wickets in 20 overs this morning with a man down. Well done lads

What seems to be happening is that somerset are losing heart as surrey are winning. . Which is good news for Lancs who have recovered well. But all we can do is focus on Notts.

I hope it is warm or at least tolerable at Trent bridge next week……

    Well done Notts !
Notts bowl them out even with a bowler down .
Absolutely vital win for the lads . Will give them a vital boost to take into the final match next week .
WHAT A STRANGE SEASON IT HAS BEEN FOR THE FANS AT TB . So much frustration from almost the first match . Be nice to think the Notts faithful will not be watching second division fodder next year.

  26. Somerset 81-1. Just need another 306…I think I’m right in saying that lands can get a maximum of 150 points meaning that a draw having taken 6 wickets in the last match keeps Notts up (or having scored 300 runs…)

  28. Don't write Somerset off. They are a disciplined team who bat a long way down as Notts have found out over the years.
Apart from Evison's contributions in both innings, Kent looked a poor team with little fight.
Notts in contrast looked focused and motivated for this fixture.
Some good fielding and some great catching by the wicket keeper.
Let's hope Notts take this positive attitude into the final game at Trent Bridge next week.

  30. This week's excellent reminder of how interesting County Championship cricket can be has made me reflect again on the inequalities the unbalanced fixture list creates over the season. Fourteen matches in a ten-team division creates a lottery.

With some teams getting to play weaker sides twice, others might have to face the stronger ones home and away. I'm sure we can all think of some counties we'd have liked to have played twice this season, and perhaps we would be in a more comfortable position in the table had that been the case.

The only fair way would be either an eight-team division with fourteen matches, or a ten-team division of 18 matches. But no doubt the whims of The H*****d will stop this happening.

    1. I agree wholeheartedly. If we'd played Kent in April in stead of Essex for example...
Having 18 counties is the problem if you have to accommodate the competition nobody wants and still maintain a fair and equal county championship. It wouldn't be right to cull two struggling counties, so the only other option would be to promote six National Counties and form a Division 3. Three divisions of 8 counties. How's that for growing the game?

  33. Sorry it is off topic, and can be deleted, but the one dayer yesterday was a pretty uninspiring one. Not fully sold out, weather not the best, pitch a bit off, and after Duckett went, pretty poor from England. To say it was the Aussies the atmosphere was flat, and the cricket played by England not smart

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hardly a balmy summer's afternoon/evening or a first choice England or Australia but we know why the timing is such. Same reason that the art of playing 50 overs has been lost by the higher profile English players. I'll leave any further moan about that competition for another thread.

    ReplyDelete
  35. So a draw with two bonus points next week and we are guaranteed to stay up, can even Notts get that right

    1. Yes. That would put us at 151 whereas lancs - with more wins already than Notts - could only hit 150

The weather forecast for Thurs- Sunday next week suggests it’ll be cold (who’d have thought?) and a bit showery but aside from that probably playable. The forecast for Worcester- who host Lancs- cold but less showery……

In theory we could still finish 5th……which I’m sure will count as “there or thereabouts”’if the feedback on the metrobank 50 over competition is anything to go by.

    3. Agree on these changes. By the excellent match reports here Dane kept well though.

I suspect the strategy will be to prepare a shirt-front, get a few bonus points, and make sure we at least draw. A track like the one at home v. Somerset will be the order of the day. But there are inherent risks in playing for a draw i.e. taking one of the four possible results out of the equation (e.g. a win).
