Worcestershire Rapids Vitality T20 Blast at Trent Bridge Loss 0 pts Report

HOSE SHUTS THE DWARSHIUS ON OUTLAWS

Worcestershire gained a comfortable 25 run victory at a cold and dank Trent Bridge last night.

Notts won the toss and elected to bowl in front of a poor Saturday night crowd of no more than 4,000. Notts brought back Henriques into the Eleven for the extremely unlucky McCann. The 38 year old Australian grimacing with pain throughout and looking nowhere like being fit to be taking part in the action. The talented McCann should be an automatic pick in the team.

Off the third delivery of the match Sams (Pavilion End) hit D'Oliveira in the midriff which knocked him off balance and the Australian ran him out in his follow through, 1 for 1. A golden duck for the Worcester skipper. Pollock (1) was caught on the square leg ropes by Montgomery off Pennington's first delivery, 1 for 2. The first four balls that Hose faced were dot balls, then the fifth found the cover ropes. From this point the wheels completely fell off for Notts in the field on another good Trent Bridge batting surface. The Notts seamers predictable and laboured throughout. The way forward at Trent Bridge has to be playing on much slower pitches to suit our spinners. The old adage of “play to your strengths” never truer.

Kashif Ali pulled Sams for six over square leg, 12 off the third over. Sams (4-0-48-0), a former Blast MVP with Essex, was disappointing once more, having currently taken three wickets @58.33 and leaking runs at the alarming rate of 10.93 RPO. Fellow New South Walian Ben Dwarshuis, also a left arm seamer, bowling later in the match (4-0-23-1) was on a different level to Sams.

Kashif Ali took 16 of the 4th over bowled by McKerr. After inside edging the third delivery for four, the next ball went for six over point. He finished with a straight boundary off the sixth delivery. Pennington also went for 16 the following over, Kashif guiding him for six over backward square leg, before thick edging the next ball to the ropes. Hose hit Montgomery for four through the covers, in an over which went for 8. Strangely Montgomery was not given another bowl. Worcestershire 57 for two after six overs.

Patterson-White conceded three off the 7th over. Kashif Ali hit Harrison for a straight boundary, eight off the over. Kashif Ali reached his 50 off 32 balls with a single off Patterson-White, six off the ninth over. Kashif Ali (51 off 35 balls, 4x4, 3x6) holed out to James on the wide long on boundary, Harrison the bowler, 74 for 3. Brookes reverse swept Harrison to the boundary, six off the 10th over. Worcestershire added a further 126 runs in their remaining half of their innings.

Hose launched Patterson-White for a huge six over mid-wicket and then Brookes swept Patterson-White to the square leg ropes , 15 off the 11th over. McKerr conceded four in the 12th over. Hose hit Harrison (3-0-25-1) for a six over square leg, 11 off the 13th over. Hose hit McKerr for four through wide third man and then a six over square leg which saw him to his 50 off 32 balls. Another 16 run over. Worcestershire 126 for 3 off 14 overs.

Brookes hit Sams for fours through backward square leg, mid-wicket and extra cover, 16 off the 15th over. Notts desperate to break the partnership. Hose hit Patterson-White for six over long off and four through the covers off successive deliveries. Brookes found Sams on the mid-wicket ropes, Patterson-White (4-0-37-1) the bowler, 153 for 4 in the 16th over. The 4th wicket stand between Hose and Brookes worth 74 in 6.2 overs

Hose cover drove Pennington for four and next ball for six over mid-wicket. Hose hit a full toss from Pennington for four through the covers, 16 off the 17th over. McKerr (4-0-40-0) conceded four in the 18th over. The calm before the storm as another 31 runs would be bludgeoned off the final two overs. Hose hit Sams for six over backward square leg then Dwarshuis him for six over square leg and then Hose cover drove him for four, 19 off the 19th over. Notts sadly lacking a death bowler. Not a good sign. Dwarshuis hit Pennington for six over mid-wicket to bring up the 200. Hose (95 off 51 balls, 7x4, 6x6) was lbw attempting a scoop shot off Pennington, 202 for 5. Worcestershire reached 206 for 5 off 20 overs with Dwarshuis on 18 and Hinley on 4. At the half-way mark Worcestershire looked home and hosed. Notts paid the price for over bowling the seamers – who went for 136 runs in their 12 overs at 11.33 RPO.

Notts innings never really got going. James (1) mistimed Taylor (Pavilion End) straight to Hose at mid-on, 3 for 1 after the first over. Duffy conceded five in the second over. Haynes hit Taylor to the mid-wicket boundary and two balls later for six over square leg, 10 off the third over. Clarke hit Dwarshuis for six over square leg and cut for four through the covers, 12 off the 4th over. Haynes lofted Duffy for six over mid-wicket. Haynes (19) lofted Duffy and was caught by Taylor at mid-off; 38 for 2 in the 5th over. Henriques hit his first delivery for four through fine leg. Dwarshuis conceded two off the sixth over. Notts 44 for 2 off 6 overs.

Henriques (5) charged Singh and was stumped by Roderick, 44 for three. Just three off the 7th over. Hinley went for four in the 8th over. Clarke hit Singh for a four through square leg and six over mid-wicket, 11 off the 9th over. Moores bottom edged Brookes for four and then for a four through backward point. Notts 72 for 3 off 10 overs.

Taylor returned and immediately had Clarke (31 off 24 balls, 2x4, 2x6) skying to D'Oliveira at extra cover,  72 for 4. Moores pulled Taylor for four off backward square leg, 8 off the 11th over. Sams hit Hinley  for six through mid-wicket. Moores hit Himley for four through backward point, 14 off the 12th over. Moores guided Singh for four through extra cover to bring up the 100, eight off the 13th over. Sams (20) pulled Brookes (2-0-21-1) for six over square leg but departed skying him to backward point,  Hose taking the catch, 112 for 5 in the 14th over.

Moores hit Singh (4-0-38-1) for a straight six and Montgomery then found the cover ropes twice in consecutive balls off the former Notts slow left-armer. Joint Notts top scorer Moores (39 off 27 balls, 5x4, 1x6) hit Duffy straight to Hinley on the point ropes, 129 for 6. Patterson-White, Notts player of the game, is wasted at eight. The one bright spark of the night scoring 39 off 19 balls (2x4, 4x6) at a strike rate of 205.26! The first three balls he faced were a straight driven four, a boundary through extra cover and then a six over mid-wicket all off Duffy. Montgomery scooped Duffy for four, 19 off the 16th over.  Unfortunately, Montgomery (15) was caught behind by Roderick off Dwarshuis attempting a similar shot,  151 for 7 in the 17th over. The game well and truly over, the frozen crowd heading to the gates in their droves. Another 30 runs were gathered off the remaining 20 balls of the match.

Patterson-White lofted Taylor (4-0-36 2) for a six and a four through mid-wicket, 16 off the 18th over. Five plus a leg bye came off the 19th over bowled by Dwarshuis. Duffy (4-0-42-2) went for six off the last over having Patterson-White dropped on 37 by Hose on the square leg ropes off the game’s final delivery. Notts 181 for 7 off 20 overs with Patterson-White on 39 and McKerr on 4. The win for Worcestershire meant that they went fourth in the standings with Notts dropping to fifth spot. MAG

  1. Looking on TV there seems to be about 4,000 there? Saturday night T20 would in the past have drawn well in excess of 10,000. Blast numbers declining, where does it go? There seems to be a max of 2 or 3 Blast matches in a week. Is this too much cricket for the players? County matches also ONE a week. The likes of Slater and Hameed will kick their heals for a lot of this season. Is it a case of players wanting to jet off when they like to franchise matches - maybe in the case of England it interferes with their golf. Phil Cooper

    2. Thank you our Derby Prem correspondent but if Ben Slater is the answer, someone's asking the wrong question. Derbyshire worked out more than a decade ago that Ben Slater wasn't a T20 player.

    3. I wasnt suggesting that Slater should play T20. Great that Ben turned out for his parent club. The problem is that he and the likes of Hameed will be playing less and less in the future if as seems the case that red ball cricket will be reduced. Given that - which way does a young batsman go - obviously for the pay days, but then will T20 support the likes of Derbyshire and Gloucestershire etc. Its a big mess. Phil Cooper

    4. It is certainly a mess Phil, which is likely to get worse.

  2. On a wet day, maybe some people thought that they didn't want to watch the Notts T20 team bowl pathetically, and concede over 200 runs for the third time in four games. It wouldn't have taken much to restrict Worcester to a 170 or 180 score. It is hard to chase down 200+ scores.

Notts have far better players available this season than last, but we all know that coach Moores won't change anything....!

Better bowling and a couple of team changes, and they could have a really good team. LPW could open the batting on what we saw today. James

  3. Didn't McCann and King play well enough at the end of last seasons' T20 to deserve being in the team? James

    1. Yeah definitely. Both Freddie , Mcann and Sam King should be playing every t20 game imo

    2. Shall we look at family trees and see if they are related to Peter Moores. They would play every T20 match then...James

  4. 82 NOT OUT
The low crowd for such a prime Blast fixture must be a worry for the Club - but apparently it’s the same pattern elsewhere . Has it simply become too expensive to attend on a regular basis ? I walked around the whole ground last night looking for any value in the food and drink being offered . Most outlets were deserted . £14 for lukewarm fish and chips from a mobile unit is simply not appealing . The food prices generally being touted there were an insult for what you actually got for your hard earned cash . Me and many , many others simply nipped across the road to the excellent chip shop and got , freshly cooked food at a fraction of the price being charged in the ground . With a double header offering lasting many hours it’s important that the food on offer represents quality at a reasonable price . Fans are voting with their feet and not buying .

    1. I would say that most attendees would have been season ticket holders, so not much income on the day from outside that. Yes the "chippy" across the road much better value. Phil Cooper
