Worcestershire Rapids Vitality T20 Blast at New Road Loss 0 pts Report

18/07

RECENT LESSONS LEARNT, ALL FORGOTTEN

as Outlaws are Brookes'd

Worcestershire won their final T20 game of the season by 45 runs at New Road yesterday to ensure that Notts can no longer qualify for the T20 quarter finals. The home side, led by a career best 20-ball 57 from Ethan Brookes, took full advantage of some pretty mediocre Notts bowling to register an above par total of 206 for 7. Experienced pair Stone and Sams going for 100 runs in eight overs. It was the sixth time in 13 games that Notts had conceded over 200 in the tournament this season. Notts lost three wickets in the powerplay  and stood at 49 for 4 in the 8th over. Despite belligerent knocks from Montgomery and Moores, Notts fell well short of their target.

An unchanged Notts won the toss and inserted Worcestershire in front of a crowd of around 2,000. Ben Gibbon was making his T20 debut for the home side. A few showers passed through Worcester in the afternoon but the game started in bright sunshine and it turned out to be a warm and pleasant evening.

Stone (New Road End) conceded two runs off the opening over. Mohammad lobbed Pennington for six over point,  11 off the 2nd over. Mohammad pulled Stone for six over fine leg and then D'Oliveira lofted him for four over point, 14 off the third over. Mohammad (27) hit Sams for a straight six and then found the point ropes off the Australian but fell next ball caught on the square leg ropes by Harrison; 39 for 1 off 4 overs. D'Oliveira lofted Pennington for four over point, eight off the 5th over. Kashif pulled Sams for six over square leg and smashed the next delivery for a straight four, 14 off the 6th over. Worcestershire 61 for 1 at the end of the powerplay. Notts had been guilty of bowling too short too often.

Harrison went for four in the 7th over. D'Oliveira hit Patterson-White for six over long on and over the Stand named after his grandfather, 10 off the 8th over. D'Oliveira hit Harrison for four through the covers, 11 off the 9th over. Kashif hit Stone for six over mid-wicket and off the last ball of the over inside edged a boundary, 14 off the 10th over - Worcestershire 100 for 1 off 10 overs.

Patterson-White had Kashif (34 off 21 balls; 2x4, 2x6) caught at long on by Stone (101 for 2), three off the 11th over. D’Oliveira and Kashif had added 62 in 6.3 overs for the 2nd wicket. Harrison went for five off the 12th over. Hose hit Patterson-White for a six through long on and then a four through extra cover, 14 off the 13th over. D'Oliveira (46 off 36 balls, 3x4, 1x6) was caught at short third man by Patterson-White off Pennington (125 for 3). Brookes came to the crease and carnage followed 59 runs scored in 4.4 overs.  Brookes guided Pennington for four through fine leg, nine runs off the 14th over. Hose hit Harrison (4 0 28 0) for a four through mid-off, 8 off the 15th over.

Brookes hit Sams for six over long leg, 11 off the 16th over. Brookes hit Patterson-White' for six over square leg. Hose then hit him for four through extra cover. Hose was then dropped on 31- a caught and bowled chance to Patterson-White (4 0 43 1). Brookes hit him for four through extra cover, 17 off the 17th over. Brookes lofted Stone (4 0 47 0) for four and six over mid-wicket. The last delivery of the 18th over was smashed by Brookes for an off driven boundary.  Hose (33 off 21 balls, 3x4, 1x6) was caught at extra cover by Harrison on the run off Pennington (184 for 4).  Taylor (4) hit Pennington (4 0 34 3) for four through long leg but fell next ball caught low down by Stone at deep mid-wicket (188 for 5). With seven balls left in the innings time was up and Notts had to bring another man into the circle. Six off the 19th over. Brookes hit Sams for 6 over mid-wicket and then reached his 50 off 18 balls with a mid-wicket boundary. The third ball was hit by Brookes for a six over long off. Worcestershire did not score of the last three balls of the innings. Brookes (57 off 20 balls, 5x4, 5x6) fell to a catch at long on by Montgomery off Sams. Allison fell for a two ball duck another catch for Montgomery at long on. Sams .(4 0 53 3) had leaked runs once more. Worcestershire 206 for 7 off 20 overs. Montgomery who took four wickets in the victory against Durham last week was not given a bowl. Only Pennington and Harrison coming out with any credit with the ball. Notts seamers constantly bowling short and wide, whatever happened to the yorker!

Taylor (New Road End) conceded two off the opening over. McCann (3) skied Khurram Shehzad to Kashif at point (5 for 1). Clarke hit Khurram Shehzad for four through extra cover, nine off the 2nd over. Haynes (1) skied Taylor into orbit Gibbon taking the catch running towards long on (14 for 2), eight off the third over including four leg byes. Henriques hit Gibbon for four through mid-wicket,  8 off the 4th wicket. Henriques benefited from some sloppy fielding from Singh at short third man who let the ball straight through him for four. Taylor conceding eight off the fifth over. Clarke (13) was caught attempting a scoop once more,  caught by Gibbon at short third man off Khurram Shehzad (36 for 3). Henriques hit the Pakistani test player for four through extra cover. Notts 42 for 3 off 6 overs and struggling.

Gibbon (2 0 24 0) conceded seven off the 7th over. Henriques (18) got a leading edge to the first delivery from Brookes and D'Oliveira caught him in the covers (49 for 4). Montgomery played his best innings of the season and in combination with Moores 61 runs were scored in 23 balls to keep Notts’ faint hopes alive. Montgomery hit Brookes for successive boundaries through backward point and extra cover, 13 off the 8th over. Moores hit Gibbon for fours through backward point and extra cover and finished the over with a six over extra cover; 17 off the 9th over. Montgomery hit Singh for four through extra cover twice and wide third man, 12 off the over. Notts 91 for 4 off 10 overs.

Montgomery (47 off 22 balls, 9x4, 1x6) hit Allison for six over square leg and lofted him for four over long off. He then pulled Allison for four through square leg and lofted him for four over third man off successive deliveries but fell off the last delivery of the over caught on the extra cover ropes by Brookes; 19 off the over (110 for 5). The game and the chance of quarter-final qualification had gone for Notts.

The light was now fading noticeably - the game should have started at 17:00 hours now we are into mid-July and New Road without floodlights. Brookes conceded five off the 12th over. Moores hit Singh (2 0 24 0) for two fours in the 13th over through extra cover and straight. Sams (3) was caught low down at long on by Mohammad off Brookes (127 for 6). Patterson-White fell for a golden duck lofting Brookes straight to Hose at backward point (127 for 7), three off the 14th over. Brookes having a superb game. Moores hit Allison for four through extra cover. Harrison (2) attempting a pull shot skied the ball behind the wicket on the legside and was caught by keeper Roderick off Allison; 139 for 8 off 15 overs.

Brookes (4 0 30 3) got hit for six by Moores over mid-wicket, nine off the 16th over. Moores pulled Taylor (4 0 24 2) for 6 over square leg. A wide followed but then Moores (57 off 29 balls, 5x4, 3x6) was caught on the mid-wicket ropes by Hose off Taylor (157 for 9), 10 off the 17th over. Moores with 384 runs @42.66 tops the Notts T20 averages only the captain Clarke has scored more runs    (415 @31.92).

Khurram Shehzad (3 0 18 2) conceded two singles in the 18th over. At 20:22, Pennington (2) was yorked by Allison (3.2 0 37 3). Notts were 161 all out off 18.2 overs with Stone 3 not out. Notts lie 7th in the table. Their net run rate the worst in the group, six of the seven defeats have been by very large margins.

Notts had taken another one on the chin, they will undoubtedly though will dust themselves down and take some learnings from the defeat and will be ready to take on group leaders Lancashire tonight. Will any of the youngsters who have sat on the sidelines throughout the tournament be finally given a go? MAG

Seriously, Pravda had forgotten about this game. One minute after I asked them if they'd forgotten via Facebook and they posted an #OutlawsAssemble graphic across social media, but still no squad.

Talk about the fleas on the tail of dog, wagging the frickin' dog!

Now 30 minutes since and the squad graphic appears:

Joe Clarke
Freddie McCann
Jack Haynes
Moises Henriques
Tom Moores
Lyndon James
Matt Montgomery
Daniel Sams
Liam Patterson-White
Calvin Harrison
Rob Lord
Olly Stone
Dillon Pennington
Farhan Ahmed

Pravda, too busy selling up tickets for tomorrow at Trent Bridge for the Sky game, had forgot to promote the actual team...

It [Pursehouse's Trent Bridge Ltd] really is all about taking money off folk and has nothing to do with Notts CCC! Pathetic.

16/07

No squad has been announced 19 hours before the match is due to start, in this must win game.

I would like to see Sam Seecharan get a chance - he's certainly see ball, hit ball in style and when he doesn't see the ball to hit he throws the kitchen sink at it anyway. Not the Silver Fox method though and that got Bud down to Junction 21, where he's thriving under Titch's tutorage. If I ruled the world...

  1. Will Notts sign young Brookes from Worcester over the winter?

Pretty shocking tonight from the so called fine players of Notts.

Clarke, McCann, Haynes, Sams, Stone did next to nothing.

At least we can all choose to do something different than going to Trent Bridge on Friday night. James

    1. Ethan Brookes has just signed a contract extension with the Pears

  2. Well played by Worcestershire but overall another disappointing performance by the Outlaws conceding over 200 for the sixth time this year. Would have expected better considering that the Outlaws had five days to prepare for this fixture and it was only yesterday we were told that greater preparation time would lead to more competitive performances - Kermit

    1. I think we've won 2 of 3 second matches of our back to back games so far this season, having lost on the first night each time. Work that out!

  3. Awful Performance. Dreadful bowling. Don't understand this win the toss and bowling rubbish. As has been said too many players doing note yet again

  4. Technically a chance for Notts to qualify still but highly highly unlikely.
A very average season in the t20 in all aspects. Crowds down (I was astonished how low the attendance was vs Derby on a warm Friday evening), “entertainment” low budget, performance bang average (best we can do is 7-7), opening batsman position unresolved and a lack of quality opening bowling, a poor overseas choice and yet despite this the 3 promising second xi batsman left on the sidelines (and therefore doing well in the SEC).
Notts need a complete reset in this- looking at pricing to get in, prices once in, how they advertise etc. There’s 3-4000 fewer in the ground than once there was and it isn’t all down to the revised schedule

    1. There's no shame in 7-7 according to Silver Fox

    2. Not a chance of qualification Jim, we would need a swing of 300 runs margins

  5. No shame in 7-7. No shame in conceding far too many runs consistently. No shame therefore, in Notts members and supporters not bothering to waste their time tonight. I wonder how the budgets at Northampton, Worcester or Durham compare? No shame in wasting money at the club, or not picking talented youngsters either. What a unaccountable club we have. James
