Derbyshire Falcons at the Co-op Derby Loss 0pts

10/08

THRASHED

Derbyshire thrashed Notts by 127 runs at the County Ground today.  With Derbyshire 161 for 5 in the 32nd over this game looked even but Amrit Basra (72 off 55 balls, 5x4, 4x6), playing only his second ever List A game, and veteran Ross Whiteley (80 off 52 balls, 8x4, 4x6) tucked into some pretty average Notts bowling and Derbyshire eventually posted a way above par total of 341 for 8 which Notts never really looked like chasing.

An unchanged Notts won the toss and elected to bowl in front of a poor crowd in sunny and warm conditions. This turned out to be a bad decision the wicket getting slower and lower as the day progressed.

Hutton (Racecourse End) and Hayes opened the bowling. Hayes proved expensive his first two overs went for 20, Jewell hit Hayes for three boundaries in four balls in the 4th over. Hayes was replaced by Sams. In the ninth over, Came (18) got a leading edge to Hutton and was caught by Pocklington at wide third man, 40 for 1. Jewell hit Sams for two boundaries in three balls; 50 for 1 off 10 overs. After a seven over spell (1 for 24) from Hutton he made way for James. Lord came on from the City End for the 16th over with Jewell reaching 50 off 53 balls. Bin Naeem hit James for 6 over mid-wicket in the 19th over. In the 22nd over, Bin Naeem (24) charged James and edged to Moores, 96 for 2.

Hayes came back and with the opening delivery of his new spell was a short loosener and Jewell (60 off 70 balls; 9x4) going for a pull shot dragged the ball onto his stumps;  110 for 3. Lord got a ball to lift and Guest (9) edged the delivery and Moores took a spectacular catch leaping far to his left;  116 for 4 after 25.1 overs. Notts bowled poorly from this point. It was very much a pace off pitch and the ball had to be pitched up. Unfortunately the Notts bowlers bowled short and wide. Derbyshire adding 225 in 24.5 overs on what looked like a par 260 pitch.

In the 28th over, Basra pulled a short ball from Lord for six over mid-wicket; 14 off the over. Basra a 23 year old right hand bat linked to the South Asian Cricket Academy who has played National Counties Cricket for Bedfordshire. In the following over, Basra pulled Hayes for six over square leg; another 12 runs gleaned. Pocklington came on very belatedly for the 30th over but bizarrely he was only given three overs – a decision that cost Notts dear. Hutton returned for the 31st over with Andersson (13) being dropped on 11 by Moores standing up to him. However, Pocklington (3-0-19-1) removed him next over leg before, 161 for 5 in the 32nd over. Basra hit Hutton for consecutive fours in the 33rd over which went for 10 runs. Hutton completed his 10 over spell (1-41). Basra reached a rapid 50 off 38 balls with a legside two off the returning Sams – who once again proved expensive in what has turned out to be a disappointing 17 game spell for Notts. James replaced Hutton for the 37th over. In the 39th over, Whiteley hit James for six over long on and three balls later for consecutive fours – 16 off the over. Derbyshire 225-5 off 40 overs.

Basra pulled James for six in the 41st over which cost 10 runs. Basra was dropped on 72 a difficult caught and bowled chance to Lord who had his revenge next ball having Basra (72),  caught at third man by Hayes; 236 for 6 in the 42nd over. Whiteley and Chappell took the game away from Notts adding 100 for the 7th wicket in 7.4 overs.

Hayes returned for the 43rd over - Whiteley hitting him for six over long leg. Whiteley hit Hayes (7 0 70 1) for consecutive sixes to bring up his 50 off 40 balls; 20 off the 45th over. Lord (10-0-76-2) was hit for six over mid-wicket; the next two balls went for four. The fifth ball was hit for six over square leg by Whiteley. A wide and a no ball followed. Chappell hit the last ball for a free hit six over long on;  31 off the 46th over, the most scored by Derbyshire from a single over in List A cricket. James went for 13 in the 47th over. Chappell smashed Sams for 6 over long on; 12 off the 48th over. Notts failed to make the cut off time point for the innings and after 48.2 overs there was an extra man brought into the circle, James (10 0 78 1) conceded 11 off the 49th over. Sams (10-0-56-1) went for five in the last over. Whiteley (80) skied him to Haynes at extra cover (336 for 7). Chappell (47 off 26 balls; 4x4, 3x6) was run out by Moores pee rolling the ball to the strikers stumps after Aitchison went for an impossible single (340 for 8). Derbyshire 341 for 8 off 50 overs with Aitchison on 4 and Morley on 1. Derbyshire 80 over par. The innings that should have ended at 14:30 had dragged on to 14:47 with Hameed only utilising three overs of spin. All very baffling.

Haydon (City End) and Aitchison opened the bowling. In the 4th over, Hameed (9) was caught at first slip by Jewell off Aitchison, 18 for 1. The 5th over of the innings bowled by Haydon to Slater was a maiden – the only one of the match. Haynes hit Haydon for consecutive offside fours in the 7th over. Zak Chappell replaced Haydon for the 9th over his first two deliveries being hit for offside fours by Haynes but off the last ball of the over Slater was dropped on 12 at third man by Bin Naeem; 10 off the over. Notts 48 for 1 after 10 overs.

Haynes hit Chappell for consecutive boundaries;  12 off the 13th over. Haydon (6-1-32-0) came on from the Racecourse End for the 13th over. Haynes (35) mistimed an attempted pull shot off a short legside delivery from Chappell and was caught behind by Guest, 76 for 2 in the 15th over. The 2nd wicket partnership of 58 was the highest of Notts’ sorry reply. Morley came on for the 16th over. Andersson for the 19th over. Seecharan (12) was out in Andersson's (6-0-29-1) second over skying him to mid-off where Whiteley took the catch; 107 for 3 after 21 overs. Slater reached his 50 off 63 balls with a single off Morley in the 22nd over. Slater was dropped on 58 a difficult caught and bowled chance to Morley in the 24th over. Aitchison returned for the 27th over. Somehow James (12) managed to get a leading edge to a widish legside “pie” from him and was caught at third man by Andersson,  140 for 4 in the 27th over. Top scorer Slater (68 off 83 balls; 9x4) drilled a Morley delivery straight back to the bowler; 150 for 5 in the 28th over. Chappell came back for the 31st over and another short legside delivery removed Moores (22) caught by keeper Guest;  166 for 6 in the 31st over. The third Notts batsman after Haynes and James to be dismissed to a dreadful delivery.

Sams hit Morley for six over wide mid-off. Sams (16) was caught at long off by Whiteley off Morley (10 0 61 2), 188 for 7 in the 34th over. Lord hit three boundaries in his 10-ball 13 before he was caught at backward square leg by Morley off Chappell (8-0-57-3); 201 for 8 in the 35th over. Hutton (2) skied Aitchison to Basra to backward point; 207 for 9 in the 37th over. The game ended at 18:02 when Hayes was caught at mid-wicket by Bin Naeem off Aitchison (8.3-0-34-4). Notts 214 all out by 38.3 overs (Pocklington 13*) had lost by the massive margin of 127 runs – well and truly thrashed.

With three difficult away games coming up, today’s game could be well viewed as a pivotal loss against opponents although much less badly affected by 100 call ups, were very much there for the taking. Notts though misread the pitch, bowled poorly in the second half of the Derbyshire innings and paid for the consequences. Notts fifth in the table having a much inferior run rate than Worcestershire and Derbyshire. Their qualification hopes will be linked to how many of the Hundred bench warmers get released back into the 50 over competition. Many other counties will be in a similar boat….. MAG

Will we need a second spin option for this venue? Have we got a second spin option that's not taken away elsewhere?

New kid on the block/only spinner left on the block?

  1. Hameed and BennySlats can both bowl a mean bit of spin ? Dunno 🤷‍♀️ if Sammy King could bowl as he hasn’t bowled much(if any) for the stiffs for so long due to his injury

  2. Bless everyone, whoever they support or neutral, who goes to Derby ground today, rather than Trent Bridge. Never imagined saying that, but mean it.

    3. Indeed, a shock result ? Maybe not, but think it is in the nargin of defeat. After an amazing previous match victory, we have travelled all the way from the sublime to the ridiculous.

    2. Derbyshire have voted for no reduction in the Blast. And intend to vote the same in the championship vote-whenever that is?? They go with the members.
They do fear for the county game going forward
