Nuts the squirrel
Nottinghamshire’s favourite woodland mischief-maker is back for 2023 – and he’s feeling cheekier than ever.
Meet Nuts the Squirrel as he roams around our venue during each matchday – and you may even get the chance to join him on the big screen during the game.
Your matchday DJ
From his home underneath the giant scoreboard – or The Principality, as it shall come to be known – renowned Nottingham DJ Jez Prince will add a little sparkle to your matchday, spinning Vitality Blast favourites and summer hits.
There'll be plenty of opportunities for you to get involved along the way, and we’re sure there’ll be room for a rendition or two of Sweet Caroline too.
Yes the silly season starts, the Vitality T20 Blast 2023. Complaints from players, coaching staff and supporters about matches coming too frequently after previous games in 2022 have not been addressed - in fact they feel even worse with shorter blocks with more games crammed into them. (see below)
Jalopy Corner
For the Outlaws in 2022, it was widely believed that too many of the XI were too long in the tooth, hence we failed to even make the quarter-finals; so the Club have announced (repeatedly) that they have replaced the then 39 year old Camperdown Campervan of 2022 with the 36 year old Leigh Land Rover in 2023 as captain.
Who will be included in the Outlaws starting XI?
Joining Shaheen Afridi (23) as our second overseas player is Colin Munro (36) who has two pairs of boots that he will have to fill, Dan Christian's and Ben Duckett's, now that Ben's been drafted by Team ECB for the rest of the season(?)
Alex Hales (34) and Joe Clarke (26) must be our openers but then the side becomes a little less obvious in the batting slots. You can't imagine a Peter Moores T20 side without Samit Patel (38), Matt Carter (26) or even Calvin Harrison (25) bowling a chunk of the overs.
Of the pacier bowling options, you have to look at the injury list: Luke Fletcher (34), Olly Stone (29) or "young" Jake Ball (32!) for at least one bowler, so that still needs another batsman or two, but who?
Any takers?
In this Bazball era, perhaps everyone is in contention for all formats. In previous seasons the likes of Haseeb Hameed (26) or Ben Slater (31) wouldn't be automatic selections in the Blast. But, Ben Slater had his Outlaws break-through in 2022, as did Lyndon James (24), but neither player being of the typical muscle-framed slogger T20 mould. More in that mould is Tom Moores (26) but he's still on the sick list after breaking a finger, so could he play just as just a batsman, allowing Joe Clarke to continue in his "franchise" duel-roles of opener and keeper?
As you will have noted, I have given the ages of the players. Where are the youngsters coming through? Shaheen Afridi is the baby of this bunch, yet he makes the headlines for other reasons, not because of this age (anymore)!

75 NOT OUT
ReplyDeleteFrantic is the word that springs to mind when perusing the 14 matches .
4 matches in 6 days in May and 3 on the trot in early June .
Seats to be booked in advance ?
WELL IN ADVANCE ??
This year the reservation bombshell was dropped on 24th February for matches where the first game started on 27th May, so there's still plenty of time for Ms Pursehouse and her minion Mr Temple to ponder their approach before they choose to upset members again (or not).
DeleteAll Notts Members know full well that the advance seat booking system at TB for Blast 20 matches had a detrimental effect on actual attendances . Will be surprised in Notts repeat the excercise. It created much anger and controversy. The timing of some of the fixtures is bad enough without having to gaze into a crystal ball and see what your personal domestic situation will be three months in advance!?
ReplyDeleteBut remember, Lisa knows best.
Delete75 NOTOUT
ReplyDeleteMy crystal ball is forcasting hard times ahead financially for many Notts Members battling to pay their central heating and other inflation busting bills!
So there might not be much cash left over to travel to places like Welbeck . You have to eat and keep warm but you dont have to watch cricket . The Notts home cricket fixtures this year are an anti climax after July when the proper summer has only just got going !
From the look of the make-up of the SET20 side yesterday and from the way that they were dominated by Lancashire; Slater, Hameed, Monty, LPW and Loten are all out of contention for now. Ben Martindale was the only one to emerge with any credit.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the score from the game at Richmond CC in the SET20 match between Middlesex and Sussex yesterday. Sussex 324, Ravi Bopara 144, winning margin 194 runs
ReplyDelete75 NOT OUT
ReplyDeleteRegardless of the make-up of the Blast 20 we all of course wish Notts ccc every success in the Competition . Its a vital source of revenue and progress to the quarter finals and beyond can obviously make a big difference to the year end balance sheet . At least this season we can sit where we like ( part of middle tier Raddy Road reserved for “ Century Club “ patrons?). The advance seating requirement last season had a big negative affect on Blast attendances but of course no one accepted any blame or wrong doing ( are you listening Mr Temple and Co?). With recent rumours and resignations and peculiar finance information everyone is now pontificating whether the unloved ( by Club Members) 100 Baller actually has a future ? Without the format being sold off at a good price or other Countries adopting it you wonder if it has a future . Personally I hope the whole thing is ditched . The ECB should be promoting the Blast 20 format and not the daft 100 Ball format
Anyway here is hoping for a cracking Blast campaign by Notts and matches blessed with good weather .
Question
Has NUTS THE SQUIRREL been ditched along with Mr SHOUTY Colin H ?
They will need a mascot for the mascot race on Finals Day. My money is on a Mr and Mrs Nuts in the near future followed by gender neutral, nut/allergy- free Nuts mascot and a trans-Nuts by 2025
DeleteBy rights Martindale should be given his chance, as he is obviously in good form. Neither Slater or James, are much cop at maneuvering the ball into the gaps .Remember all the dot balls from Slater in the past.
ReplyDeleteBut the blinkered old horse that Moores is, don't ex pect the unexpected , or the baptism of any new young blood. No, my money is firmly on Dad's Army series 2.
I've said this every year; they should have a policy of introducing fresh, younger blood into the side year on year otherwise we reach the point where we got to last year - "Dad's Army Series 1*. Everyone has had a birthday since then, so unless Mr Moores has found a way of reversing nature and sticks with the same old faces, you are correct Mark to expect Series 2.
DeleteHope Notts can do well this year and be in the mix at the business end, it was really strange last year being out of realistic contention so early on, not overly confident though.
ReplyDeleteLancashire had to play Leicester at lunchtime due to Sky rearranging the Manchester United v Chelsea Premier League match for this evening. Due to the cricket being a double header this may have restricted their ability to move it to another day.
ReplyDeleteLast season Notts had a double scheduled but moved the men's game because of football related issues. The women's game was played as originally scheduled.
