Leicestershire’s headquarters at Grace Road continues to be a ground favoured by Glamorgan’s batters and where a series of record-breaking performance have occurred (writes Andrew Hignell).

Last year, it was Sam Northeast and Chris Cooke who shared an Club record partnership of 461* - the highest-ever stand for any wicket in the Welsh county’s history as a first-class club.

This year it was Cooke and Michael Neser who re-wrote the record books against the Leicestershire attack as the pair shared a record eighth wicket stand of 211 in 65.1 overs, thereby surpassing the 202 added by Dai Davies and Joe Hills against Sussex at Eastbourne, 1928, as well as beating Glamorgan’s previous best for the eighth wicket against Leicestershire set in 1978 at Swansea when 166 was added by Gwyn Richards and Malcolm Nash.

Michael's score of 90 was also his best-ever score in the County Championship beating the 62 he made against Durham at Chester-le-Street last summer.

Cricketers have been left frustrated after a group of travellers set up on their ground causing 'major disruption'. A group of travellers, reported to be towing 18 caravans, moved onto the grounds of Cavaliers & Carrington Cricket Club on Esher Grove, Mapperley Park at around 9pm on Sunday, April 16.

The club leases the cricket ground from the council and is in the process of serving an eviction notice to the group. Kafeel Shafique, 30, first team club captain and committee member, said residents had informed one of committee members straight away.

"When we went to the ground the police were already there, but there was not much they could do so they checked everyone was alright and then they told us to leave and take the necessary action.

"I did speak to one of them and he replied 'we are good people', but the thing is we have no issue with the traveller community - it is that you have come onto our ground and unsettled our club. Nobody should do that."

The solicitor, who has been part of the club for more than a decade, explained the trespassing had caused "major disruption". "We have four men's teams, a women's team and from U-9s all the way up to U-17s. The women's team were supposed to have a warm up match today and our first match was due on Saturday, but we've had to cancel everything.

They've been driving all over the ground and the pitch and the wicket covers have also been damaged. It's not good because it is all going to be an expense - it has been very frustrating for everyone."

Game lost to weather

15/04

Play was abandoned for the second day running at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol, with play yet to start in the LV= Insurance County Championship Division Two match between Yorkshire and Gloucestershire.

A wet outfield put paid to yesterday’s opening day – the sun was shining when umpires Paul Pollard and Billy Taylor called things off at 9.45am.

But today, persistent overnight and morning rain meant there was no chance of any play at the Nevil Road venue, with the umpires making their decision at 9.30am.

The forecast for Saturday and Sunday is for dry weather in the South West, and the players and coaches from both sides will hope today’s rain doesn’t do too much damage to the outfield and enable some play to take place.

Joe Clarke on Trent Bridge Pravda

With the season fast approaching, there is still yet to be an announcement of Joe Clark's new contract, which he signed last summer. It is just a little odd, and not the Trent Bridge usual means of practice. At least from the article we can draw from it that the new contract isn't a white ball only deal.

  2. What a deeply disappointing and depressing 'lecture' by Strauss - wooded, corporate, laissez-faire and, worst of all, dismissive and disrespectful of the red ball game. I cannot believe I am actually saying this but I now actually prefer Ponting (https://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/ponting-s-timely-call-for-central-test-funding-must-be-heeded-20230125-p5cfcp.html) to Strauss...and I was at the MCG and the SCG in 10/11!

    1. Strauss is too wrapped-up in his own self-importance. I suspect that he believes that he is talking sense all of the time. The great shame is that he is for 90% of the time he's talking utter twaddle.

Any decent captain used to stamp
on anything really bad, but we now live in an age of hypocrictical self righteousness, Re Strauss on dressing room culture, during his lecture.

The good news with this is as it only opens from Thursday to Sunday(at best) you can quickly hop it across the road when you’ve finished your culinary experience and wuff pie&chips down from the Raddy Rd Fish Bar if you were still a bit peckish from those delicate taster offerings. You see Ms. Pursestrings thinks of everything for us.

Agreed Foxy ! The palatial SIX is mighty expensive and very arty in food presentation - no pie peas and chips there.
But looking in the recently received accounts I noticed it produced an income for NOTTS of £500,000.
Whether or not it actually made a profit is a different matter

    ReplyDelete
  10. Each to their own of course, and if it has made that much money for the club then it’s a success.
If people want to spend their money on it then who am I ?
But, the valentines meal , 110 quid , plus 15 for a cheese and port , plus 50 quid for wine! . I could eat in spoons at lunchtime in all the championship game for the next 2 seasons for that, foxy,

From over spend on build over spend on for fit out plus the £100.000 chef its only open two half days a week at best no proper run business can survive with this business model in my experience the 6th
with its fixed staff & running costs it's got to be haemorrhaging money week by week if open

  13. Yes, Rich. Despite all his white ball achievements in the game, another VERY lucky boy that his playing era coincided with franchise cricket.
Otherwise a failed Test player, back to Middlesex and you’re on the County treadmill making a living for all these years.
Still, that’s his good fortune but it does make you wonder with him and Jason Roy et all and lads with no technique for proper, first class, cricket.
I think Hales could have had a decent Test career, but suspect he thought he wouldn’t be given many more opportunities in Test cricket so went the way he did instead.

    2. It's not far from Preston, and Leyland isn't an insignificant place. It's got good access to motorways and there's a railway station not far away. What concerns me is that they think that it's worthwhile for up to 6 Blast matches there with a capacity of only 5K. I assume the Roses game will still be earmarked for Old Trafford? What are Lancashire gates usually for games with Derbyshire or Northants for example, surely well in excess of 5K?

      Delete
    3. Just had a look on the map, said development is well connected by motorways.
Found an archive article on the beeb from dec21. Said that it would be up and running by 24( that’s not far off now)and that Southport, Blackpool, Sedbergh
      wood still be used.
Your question about 20/20 attendance ;I would assume lancs get as many as notts do , more probably given the ground capacity. Interesting stuff. Foxy

    REF THE LANCS “second home”
Why cant Notts upgrade the Lady Bay ground in order to stage fixtures that will take the pressure off the Trent Bridge square ? Thus do away with Notts ccc supporters having to make awkward journeys to Grantham , Welbeck and perhaps other “ out “ grounds that may be necessary ?

    ReplyDelete
  18. That's a very good idea wonder if the powers that be have looked into this

    ReplyDelete
  19. 75 NOT OUT
    COME ON Notts ccc!
Put a few quid and some real pro effort into making Lady Bay more attractive to visit and support the Second 11.
Those that turn up there are true cricket supporters and they are being short changed by poor conditions and facilities on the ground . A £50,000 investment would make a big difference. A drop in the ocean when you look at this years Nottts ccc accounts and profit and loss ?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Pathetic.
All the millions they’ve wasted on the city franchise stuff. Not decrying the goodwill of anyone that volunteers, but this says all you want to know, if you didn’t know already about the “know your station “attitude to the real cricket lovers . Foxy

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Total lack of respect to the 18+ professionals spin bowling in the Championship, of all abilities. The so called selectors are too bone idle to go and watch any of them and as Moeen is part of that clique of Sky/ECB/Stokes/Barmy Army approved (now aging cricketers), his familiar face fits straight in. He's failed in the role before and now he's got the opportunity to fail again. Exciting choice, it is not! He's not looked at a red ball in two years.

      Delete
  35. Feel somewhat vindicated in comments on this thread about Moeen's unsuitability for Test cricket at this stage of his career. His fingers aren't toughened enough after 2 years out. Therefore he's not up to the job. Bairstow has shown again that he's a poor wicketkeeper - how many chances did he put down/miss in the Aussie's first innings? The England cricket team shouldn't just be Ben Stokes and those he considers his mates exclusively; it ought to be the best players! IMHO, of course.

    1. Richie's BeanoFriday, 23 June, 2023

With England batting at an accelerated rate and finishing their innings quicker, Australia's bowlers will be required to bowl fewer overs than their aging English strike bowling counterparts. Also, Australia can bat ultra-safely with the extra time provided by the shortened England innings. That's a double whammy in my eyes, in a series that's over in such a short time period.

  37. Urgent need to calm down in cricket.
Agree to disagree, with mutual respect between these 2 Test countries.
The idea of Australia being booed onto the field on Thursday, terrible.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You don't think Australia deserve to know what people think of their onfield antics? Pushing the laws to their limits, whinging when one law doesn't suit, but then hiding behind another "by the letter of the laws 3rd umpire ruling". Opportunities were given to them to withdraw their appeal I understand, which they declined or ignored. They have set the tone themselves. Traditional cricket might of edged out Bazball in the first test and short ball was beating/ killing Bazball stone dead in the second before the Australians went all Ozball. Booing and sandpaper waving is what they deserve. It might be terrible and not cricket, but that is the tone the Australians have set. The Bodyline series saw a few additions to the laws as a result of legitimate tactics used, but this series might need some clarifications to the spirit of the game. Ozball winning at any cost could prove terminal for test cricket.

    2. Respectfully no, don't think that.
Bairstow did something very similar to Samit Patel in 2014, and laughed about it. I was there.
      I saw it.
Australia also allege he tried to run out Warner, earlier in this match in the same way, though I have not seen that.
Behaviour of crowd, my opinion true, terrible.

      Delete
  38. By Thursday it'll be just pantomine booing of the Aussies. Yesterday, if the game was anywhere else other than at "reserved" Lord's, there would have been little doubt left in the Australian's minds about the poor sportsmanship that they now represent in English eyes. If Australia feel it's worth winning at any cost, is it they that have drawn the battle lines, England have been just trying to entertain. Now, England have to whip-up the crowd to gain home advantage, as every pantomine needs a villian (or eleven villians). A different form of entertainment for those shelling out for Test Match tickets and should be right up Headingley's street / Western Terrace. For my personal context, I was at Trent Bridge yesterday and only read the BBC's reporting during start of the Notts game, watching the highlights later in the car park on my phone. Which game, what format in 2014?

  39. County Championship, as Yorkshire clinched the title.
Bairstow stood and waited , ball in hand, Patel in his ground but falling forward slightly, as Samit lifted his foot, JB whipped off the bails. Sky were there, and it went to
"review", should not have, as no review system in the competition, but did. Dicke Bird was near to us in members, and did not like what had happened, despite it favouring Yorkshire. There was a bit of booing, but not much, and it didn't last.

    ReplyDelete
  40. From MAG's report: Patel (25) looked in good form and hit five fours and added 53 with Titch. Bairstow was standing up to seamer Steven Patterson and Patel after leaving a leg side delivery momentarily lifted his foot. Yorkshire appealed for the stumping which without the cameras could not be given. But umpire Benson confirmed the stumping and Patel left the field for the second time after a review.
