Worcestershire Rapids Vitality T20 Blast at New Road Loss Report

22/06

RUNS SHORT OUTLAWS EASILY CHASED DOWN

Notts lose for the first time at New Road

An unbeaten 6th wicket stand of 60 between Adam Hose (33 not out off 41 balls, 3x4) and Ed Pollock 38 not out (off 25 balls, 5x4) saw Worcestershire home with 9 balls to spare with Notts dropping to third place in the standings. On a used hybrid pitch, batting was not easy, as once again pace off was the option.

Worcestershire won the toss and elected to bowl. James and Hameed (on his T20 debut) came in for the injured pair of Munro (hamstring) and Patel (calf). It was strange on a such a grudging surface that Matt Montgomery was not given a bowl and Calvin Harrison did not complete his allocation of overs. The injured duo were badly missed. Notts are too reliant on the top three. Matt Montgomery who was on the sweep most of his innings top scored with a run a ball 39 off 39 balls (5x4, 1x6) but the batting failed once more. Notts were indebted to a late flurry of runs, 47 runs being scored of the last 4.2 overs including 15 off the last over. Moores (31 not out, 3x6) and Carter (14 not out) added an unbroken 24 for the 9th wicket aided by a couple of dropped catches. Notts total looked under par but the decision to bowl James second over instead of one of the slow men backfired as he went for 22 to apply jump leads to the Worcestershire reply. Brett D’Oliveira (36 off 27 balls, 5x4, 1x6 an 3-0-15-2) as he had at Trent Bridge led the way. Notts fought back with Worcestershire standing at 80 for 5 off 11.3 overs with Mullaney (4-0-18-1) and Harrison (3-0-16-2) being the stand outs. The captain stuck to his bowling timetable and decided to bring the pace duo of Ball and Afridi back with 29 required off the final 4 overs achieved off just 2.3 overs as the Rapids got over the line comfortably.

Pennington (New Road End) bowled the opening over. Clarke took a single off the first ball. Hales was then dismissed for a golden duck, caught behind by Cox, 1 for 1. His third duck of the competition this season with only 6 runs scored from his last 3 innings Four off the first over. James (6) hit Santner to the point ropes but lost his off stump to a ball that turned from the slow left armer’s second delivery, 8 for 2 off 2 overs. Six came off the third over bowled by Pennington. Clarke hit Waite for six over long on, nine off the 4th over, Waite not to bowl again in the match. Montgomery, dominating the strike, ramped Pennington for 4, five runs off over number 5. Montgomery clubbed a short delivery from Brown to mid-wicket ropes. Two balls later, Montgomery hit him for six over extra cover. Notts 40 for 2 off 6 overs.

Three plus a leg bye came on off the 7th over bowled by leg spinner Mir. D'Oliveira went for 7 off the 8th over. Montgomery reverse swept Mir twice for 4, nine off the 9th over. Clarke (19) starved off the strike holed out to the mid-wicket off D'Oliveira, Brown taking the catch, 61 for 3. Hameed came in at number 5 playing his first senior T20 game at the advanced age of 26. Four off the 10th over. Notts struggling at half-way house.

Montgomery reverse swept Santner for 4, but the other 5 deliveries of the 11th over were dot balls. Montgomery (39) skied D'Oliveira to Mir at deep extra who took an easy catch, 70 for 4. Top-scorer Montgomery, very much a positive addition to line-up this season had failed to score off 21 of the 39 balls (54%) he faced. Five runs off the 12th over. Hameed hit Santner to the fine leg boundary, six runs off the 13th over. Three runs came off the 14th over bowled by Mir with Moores running a short run. Six runs came the 15th over bowled by Brown. Hameed (18 off 17 balls) was caught at long on by Kashif Ali off Santner, 90 for 5. Moores hit Santner (4-0-31-2) for sixes over long on and mid-wicket, 15 off the over including 2 wides. Afridi (1) holed out to Brown on the square leg ropes off Mir (4-0-19-1), 105 for 6, 4 off the 17th over. Mullaney (6) found the square leg boundary off Brown but then fell to a well-judged running catch at deep extra cover by Santner as Brown picked his first scalp, 115 for 7. Harrison went for a golden duck losing his middle stump attempting a ramp shot off Brown, 115 for 8.. Carter hit the hat trick delivery to the backward point ropes, 11 off the 18th over. Pennington (4-0-19-1) only conceded 4 singles off the 19th over. Brown (3-0-44-2) went for 15 in the last over as the Rapids dropped two catches. Carter on 7 was spilled by D'Oliveira at deep mid-wicket ropes. Moores hit a 6 over long on and then was dropped on 30 at short third man by Haynes. Carter hit the final delivery for four through backward square leg. Notts 139 for 8 with Moores on 31 and Carter on 14. The score looked and proved inadequate

Afridi (New Road End) conceded two singles in the opening over. Notts knowing the nature of the surface as being pace off made the odd decision of giving Lyndon James over number 2 it proved pivotal going for 22. D'Oliveira ramped a no ball from for 4. The free hit was hit for a straight six over long on. The next two balls went to the third man boundary. Haynes (2) was caught at mid-on by Afridi off Ball, 27 for 1, 4 off the 3rd over. D'Oliveira hit Carter for 4 through long leg and Santner stroked him to the deep extra ropes, 9 off the 4th over. D'Oliveira hit Ball to the mid-wicket boundary, 6 off the 5th over. Santner hit Afridi for four through the covers. Worcestershire 50 for 1 off 6 overs, comfortably placed requiring 90 from 14 overs.

Mullaney went for 3 singles in the 7th over. Notts then hit a purple patch with Worcestershire restricted to 27 in 4.3 overs and losing four wickets to some pretty mediocre shots in the process. Santner (13) dabbed a Carter delivery straight back to the bowler, 53 for 2. Hose reverse swept Carter for 4. Hose got a square leg boundary off Carter, James letting the ball go through him on the ropes, nine off the over. Moores standing up failed to take a routine delivery from Mullaney, four byes being the result. Two off the bat in the 9th over. D'Oliveira (36) was caught on the deep mid-wicket ropes by Hameed off Harrison, 68 for 3. Kashif Ali hit his first delivery for 4 through extra cover. Worcestershire 75 for 3 off 10 overs.

Kashif Ali going for a legside heave was bowled by Mullaney for 7, 79 for 4, 4 off the 11th over. Cox went for a golden duck bowled round his legs attempting a sweep off Harrison, 80 for 5. Three runs off the 12th over. Pollock having a miserable 2023 tournament (51 runs @8.50) came good and played the pivotal role with him and Hose comfortably getting Worcestershire over the line.

Hose hit Mullaney to the extra cover ropes. The excellent Mullaney (4-0-18-1) conceded 10 off his last over including two legside wides. Carter went for 5 in the 14th over. Harrison conceded 6 in the following over. Pollock hit Carter (4-0-31-1) to the extra cover ropes, eight off his final over. Worcestershire needed 29 off 4 overs as Mullaney went back to pace.

Afridi returned and Pollock edged his first delivery for 4 and three balls later smashed him for a straight four, 11 off the 17th over. Pollock hit Ball (3-0-23-1) for a straight four and then for 4 through extra cover as Hameed fumbled the ball over the ropes, 13 off the over. Hose acquired twos off the first two balls of the 19th over and then hit the winning single. Afridi (3.3-0-25-0) had failed to take a wicket for the first time in Notts colours. Worcestershire had won their first ever T20 game against Notts at New Road and the third on the trot to double Notts and go above them in the standings.

The table gets more and more congested but Notts probably require one more win. They will be hoping that veteran Patel, who’s consecutive run of T20 games was halted at 145, returns for final 2 games next week. Olly Stone near fitness should prove a positive addition to the team. With Afridi likely to be missing for the final stages of the competition and with Munro’s fitness very much in doubt Notts would though seem a long shot for the title. MAG

21/06

If no inform Joe Clarke, one of the Big Four Outlaws, then we're in trouble, big trouble.

If no Colin Munro, another of the Big Four Outaws, we're in double trouble.

But, if we're without Samit Patel the Outlaws lynchpin for the past two decades then we're totally screwed!

Start your rain dances now folks.

Of course we have no information about the injuries, the Pravda sanitised report from last night even forgot to mention Samit's difficulties and that we were using everyone available at the ground in the field at the end.

  1. Squad news(when we eventually get it, after all the big event is consuming TB Pravda, could be interesting?
Credit to Samit, he’s always said how can his fitness be an issue as he just doesn’t miss games through injury but you cannot legislate for turning your ankle etc.
I suppose you could just do the more simple thing and bring back Lyndon James if it’s only one player out and not 2 or even 3
Hopefully it’s good news as Loten is still in Durham along with Singh, no way of knowing whether Ben Martindale came back early and/or LPW’s situation which presumably is still not great or I assume he may have had a run out for the stiffs in this current seconds game
The Worcester Raptors can be a bit of a bogey side. The team often plays above the sum of its parts which is always better than the opposite happening.
I’m surprised the authorities still don’t allow for permanent floodlights at New Road. Is it a local residents situation I wonder ? But, it is 2023 and even the MCC down at Lords have come onboard(eventually) in allowing the redevelopment of the Compton and Edrich stands and also allowing music at Blast games - whatever next. It’s just not cricket old bean.

    2. Many have thought that for the past few years, but to his credit Samit has come back and won a game or two each time, leaving his critics eating their own words. He remains a very wily bowler. Worryingly, he's never had to come back from an injury before.

    3. Fair comment on Patel but it's clear he's not going to be around nexr summer. But really was a fine batsman and bowler who lightened up the Bridge onany occasions.

  2. Prior to this match, Worcestershire haven't ever beaten Outlaws at New Road!!

  3. Master blaster Hales is not doing much blasting in this yet .Is he interested.

  4. Tom Loten, Ben Martindale ? Better options in a t20 slogfest compared to Hameed and LJ ? We’ll never know as cautious Pete the Head Coach, seems to be getting more defensive with his team selection?
How ironic, the game when even he just surely had to give Liam a go, and he’s unluckily injured
Did I actually hear, the Worcester stream commentators saying at half time that the radio Nottingham commentators(our friend DoubleCorset and Mr. Football himself Colin Fray, presumably), actually made Notts 60-40 favourites for the game ?
Pls feel free Dave to confirm or deny,

  5. T20 cricket is horses for courses and we had some wrong horses on that course. James and Hameed are not T20 cricketers and it is cruel to delude them otherwise.

    The coach is a joke.

    1. Bewildered by PM's comments that our score was par when clearly it wasn't as it only reached 7RPO after a late accidental flurry of steaky runs. When bowling, previous lessons learnt the hard way in earlier defeats, had been forgotten again and we had repeated captain's errors in judgement! Sometimes it's like Dan Christian had never been an Outlaw and shown them the way to play T20 cricket and win.

  6. Bizarre decisions on bowling at the end but I suppose you have to let the 'overseas' player have his overs

  7. Table might be a little clearer after tonight's matches.

  8. Predictable Pete, true to form with his selections as usual.
New Road, due to its historical flooding issues, is notorious, for being a slow track, which in this format, is certainly a bonus for spin bowling.
Once Samit was ruled out, the forward thinking and sensible solution, would have been to bring back Singh from Durham to add the slow left arm variation and power batting, to the lower middle order. However, as we are fully aware, it is against Mr Moores's DNA, to unlock that creaking pathway gate. Pettman is in his third season at Notts, and hasn't even played a championship game for the club,as yet.Unbelievable.
Realistically, if Notts limp over the line into the quarter finals, there is unlikely to be enough batting depth to carry Dad's Army version 2, into the semi finals. But you never know, stranger things have happened.

  9. Liam Livingstone's boot bufferFriday, 23 June, 2023

Nicknamed either the Baby Boycott or the Burnley Boycott; there's little wonder he's never been a T20 regular, yet Peter Moores thinks he knows better.

  10. Injuries are killing us at the moment, I expect we'll get through to the quarter final and then no doubt we'll get Hampshire and as usual, that will be that.

    1. It's looking more likely that we'll be away at Surrey or Somerset should we qualify for the Q/F.

Are injuries a result of having an aging squad of too few players and not rotating those players?

Once Alex Hales finds form, we can beat anyone, however.

  11. What a bizarre video interview from Ben Kenobi(The Head Coach)
How can 140ish ever be a par score even if it’s a dead used surface ? You’ve only got to bowl a couple of poor overs(and every side is always capable of that in t20) and you’re stuffed. A bit of credit for Tom Moores for actually getting us ‘a score’ to defend, but surely 15 to 20 more was actually the par score.
He seemed totally convinced that was the correct team selection, I don’t think we could have picked a poorer top 6 if we’d tried
A maté reminded me earlier that Ben Slater(remember him) scored a 100 off a 24 over game against a decent Tykes bowling attack when he was at Derby. Has our famed coach got no knowledge of this happening and instead we decide to give a t20 debut to Hameed who is a very decent red ball, conventional opener and there’s nothing wrong with that. Even made an excuse for him holding out in the deep. No, Peter, he doesn’t clear the ropes, it’s not his game
Well done to the Seconds on their victory. The bad news is, if you’re a young, promising, player then your probably at the wrong club

  12. The intro to Pravda's report: "A nail-biting affair at New Road saw Notts Outlaws undone by excellent work in the field from Worcestershire Rapids, as the hosts clinched victory with nine deliveries to spare on a dry and fair Thursday evening despite a well-measured response with the ball from Peter Moores’ side."

I think that my TV must be broken, as that's not what I watched or saw. They do contradict themselves as anyone who's ever watched T20 cricket will realise, 9 deliveries to spare doesn't make a nail biting finish.
