Durham Vitality T20 Blast at Riverside, Chester le Street Win Report

MULLANEY PACE-OFF SETS-UP HALES TO WIN CHASE FOR OUTLAWS

Notts recorded a crucial 5 wicket win at the Riverside last night. After Notts had restricted the home side to 168 for 5 on a gloriously sunny evening. Notts' reply was built around Alex Hales, on a slow gripping surface with long boundaries. Notts broke the back of the run chase by racing to 71-2 in the powerplay, but as the ball got older, timing the ball got more difficult. Despite miserly spells from experienced seamer Ben Raine (4 0 15 2) and former Seaxe leg spinner Nathan Sowter (4-0-20), Notts returned home with the points. Hales 65 not out got support from Joe Clarke (20), Lyndon James (20) and Tom Moores (32). At the death, Shaheen Shah Afridi decided to try and hit every ball he faced to the next parish a white knuckle ride of an innings resulted in 2 sixes, , a four, a single and a leg bye and seven dot ball but it was his enormous straight six off Trevaskis that saw Notts over line at 21:20 with four balls to spare. Hales though had batted the situation superbly to end up on 65 not out (off 46 balls, 7x4, 2x6) on a surface not ideally suited to his style of batting.

An unchanged Notts inserted Durham who had the vastly experienced Wayne Parnell, making his Durham T20 debut after completing his spell with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. The crowd numbered around 6,000, mainly basking in the sun at in the north facing double-decked County Durham Stand.

Afridi (Lumley End) bowled the first over and conceded five. Carter bowled the second, Clark hitting him for a straight six, eight off the over. Clark hooked Afridi for 6 and followed it with a legside boundary, the last ball of the over was driven to the boundary by Clark over mid-off's head, Durham 28 for 0 off 3 overs. Clark (29 off 15 balls) hit McKerr to the cover ropes before two balls later driving McKerr low to Mullaney at mid-off, 35 for 1. Jones hit four from the first two deliveries he faced, to the third man and square leg boundaries respectively 15 off the over. Carter conceded 4 singles off the 5th over. Jones hit McKerr for a legside four and next ball cover drove another four. The fourth ball was steered to the third man ropes by Jones. Another 15 off a McKerr over. Durham 62 for 1 at the end of the powerplay and seemingly well placed.

It was Mullaney who was to slow them down. the skipper knocked back Jones’ off stump for a 12 ball 26, 66 for 2, 5 off the 7th over. Patel conceded 5 off the 8th over. The struggling Lees (13 off 17 balls) mistimed a legside hit off Mullaney to the running Carter at short third man who took an easy catch, 73 for 3. Robinson hit Mullaney for 4 through backward point, seven off the 9th over. Turner reverse swept Patel for 4. Durham 89 for 3 off 10 overs.

Turner hit Mullaney for a six over long off, 12 off the 11th over. Ollie Robinson, the recent recruit from Kent, hit Patel for 4 through extra cover, 10 off the over. Robinson pulled Carter for 4, 117 for 3 off 13 overs. Robinson cover drove James' first delivery for 4, 10 off the 14th over, James once again only given a solitary over. Turner (27) holed out to Hales at long off, Mullaney (4 0 28 3) the bowler , 130 for 4. Patel (4 0 32 0) conceded 7 off his last over.

Notts most economical bowler of the night, Carter (4 0 26 0) conceded 7 off the 17 overs. Robinson ramped Afridi for 4.Robinson reached his 50 with an extra cover boundary off Afridi but was bowled leg stump two balls later, 158 for 5, 13 off the over. Robinson had scored 50 off 38 balls (6x4). Doneathy skied McKerr to Hales at mid-off, 161 for 6. McKerr (3 0 33 2) conceded three off the 19th over. Afridi (4 0 39 1) bowled the last over and went for 6, including three off the last ball, Durham 168 for 6 off 20 overs de Leede 13 not out and Trevaskis 3 not out. Notts had pulled the back of the end of innings well, Durham only scoring 40 off the last 6 overs.

De Leede (Finchale End) bowled the first over and his first two deliveries were wides, Clarke hit the first legitimate delivery for 4 through cover. Off the fifth, Clarke lofted the Dutch man for a straight six, 12 off the over. Parnell bowled the second over, Hales lofting him for four through extra cover, Clarke repeated the shot, 11 off the over. Trevaskis bowled the third over, Clarke hitting him for four through mid-wicket. Clarke then drove the ball to the slow left armer who parried the ball from above his head and catching Clarke (20 off 12 balls, 3x4, 1x6) off the ricochet running to his right, 29 for 1. Munro hit his first delivery for a straight six. Parnell bowled the fourth over, Hales thick edging him to third man, Notts 42 for 1 off 4 overs. De Leede returned for the 5th over and it turned out to the pivotal over the match. Hales hitting him for a mid-wicket six, a dot ball followed, Hales then slogged him for a straight four. Ball number 4 was a square leg six. A wide followed. The fifth delivery of the over was smashed by Hales for a four through mid-wicket. The last ball was a boundary through mid-off, 25 off the over. Notts well on their way. Raine came on and bowled Munro (6) middle stump, the Kiwi missing an expansive drive with his second delivery, 67 for 2. Raine then bowled three successive dot balls before Montgomery found the point ropes off the last ball, 71 for 2 at the end of the powerplay.

Sowter bowled the 7th over and Montgomery (6) was caught low down at short extra cover by Turner, 74 for 3. Four runs off the over. Raine bowled the 8th over, James finding the backward point boundary, seven off the over. Sowter conceded four singles off his second over. Trevaskis bowled the tenth over which contained six singles. Notts, 92 for 3 at the half way mark, had only scored 21 since the end of the power play.

Turner (1 0 10 1) came on the 11th over and James hit him for a mighty mid-wicket six but then departed caught at short mid-wicket by Sowter for 20, 102 for 4 off 11 overs. Raine conceded three off the 12th over. Moores survived a stumping chance off Sowter which went up to the big screen. Hales got to his 50 off 33 balls with a single off Sowter, six off the over. Moores had come in and he took up the reins and monopolised the strike, his brute force and fast running between the wickets saw him race to 32 off 19 balls (4x4, 1x6). He hit Trevaskis for 6 over square leg and a four through mid-wicket and then a four through backward square leg, 16 off the over. Notts 127 for 4 off 14 overs. Sowter (4 0 20 1) conceded six off his last over with Hales hitting his final delivery to the extra cover boundary. Notts needed 36 off 5 overs.

Parnell returned and Moores hit him for four through third man. He then scampered a couple of twos. The fourth ball was clubbed by the stumper to the extra cover ropes, 147 for 4 off 16 overs, 14 off the over. Hales got a single of first ball of the next over bowled by Raine (4 0 15 2), he then bowled two dots at Moores who was then bowled going for a heave to cow corner. Moores out for 32, 148 for 5. Afridi, promoted up the order, scampered a leg bye off the last ball, only one coming off the bat in the over. Twenty required off 4 overs.

Parnell bowled the 17th over and bowled a further two dot balls to Afridi who then ran a desperate single. Hales then hit Parnell (4 0 37 0) for a four through fine leg, a further two dot ball followed, five off the over. De Leede returned and his first ball was smashed to long off ropes for four by Afridi. The next ball was a six over mid-wicket. Notts seemed to be nearly home but Afridi swished at thin air for four consecutive balls. De Leede though still ended up with the nightmare figures of 3 0 47 0. Five were needed off the last over bowled by Trevaskis. Hales got an easy single off the first ball then Afridi smashed Trevaskis (3.2 0 41 1) for a straight six which soared over the Lumley End ropes. Notts 171 for 5 off 19.2 overs with Hales on 65 not out with 46 balls and Afridi on 17 off 12 balls. On the awkward surface, Notts had hit 17 fours and eight sixes compared to the home sides count of 15 fours and 3 sixes. The brute strength of the Notts batsmen had seen them home to a key win over a highly confident Durham outfit that had steam rollered most opponents during the first two months of the season. MAG

29/05

Confirmed, the squad remains the same.

28/05

Will the squad remain the same, will anyone be introduced into the squad or has anyone pick-up a knock?

We don't know, as we haven't been informed. They'll tell you The Blaze squad for tomorrow's game, but not the Outlaws'.

Here's the fourteen that we've had to date:

Joe Clarke
Alex Hales
Colin Munro
Matt Montgomery
Tom Moores
Steven Mullaney
Lyndon James
Samit Patel
Matt Carter
Shaheen Afridi
Conor McKerr
Haseeb Hameed
Calvin Harrison
Jack Brooks

Logic would say we brought Calvin Harrison into the playing eleven, especially if the boundaries are spread wide to full acreage. Calvin's fielding; his catching and his speed would be most advantageous. Peter Moores doesn't always follow logic, however.

Conor McKerr had a bit of a shocker on Saturday, as did, to some extent, Shaheen Afridi, but I can't see Shaheen Afridi making way for anyone. I just hope SA didn't get the club in any dismerit point trouble with his remonstrating with Hassan Adnan on Saturday. In Shaheen Afridi's defence, having watched three Blast games today (the beauty of Youtube), Hassan Adnan is alone in his interpretation of what appears now to be an even more flexible approach to legside wides with a moving batsman.

The interpretation of legal/illegal beamers needs some work though, after some rather high full tossers were sent down at Taunton, legally.

  1. 75 NOT OUT
Probably be a tight game . Durham are an improved side this season and are no pushover . The Blast games are certainly coming thick and fast for Notts . Durham is not exactly around the corner and its a long journey back - three to four hours - thats tiring in itself . Easy to get jaded pretty quickly . Interesting to see the attendance tomorrow at TB compared to the big turn out on Friday just gone . Notts probably hoping for 8,000/9,000 for the midweek Blasts - rising to 12,000 /14,000 for the popular boozy Friday nighters . Notts ccc marketing dept seem to be on steroids at the moment . Seem to be getting about 3 emails a day frim them .
Hoping Alex Hales can entertain us with a big innings tomorrow night .

  2. 75 NOT OUT
Hope I am wrong - but if any Blast side posts a score of 200 then Notts wont get them . This looks a Notts side that should just about get to the quarter final stage and thats it .
Nice to see Alex back in the runs and taking responsibility for staying at the crease and getting the team home . The next few Blast matches look to be played in fine weather which should bring a smile to Mr Temples team . Many folk decide on the day whether or not to attend - depending on the forecast .
Must remember to take some ear plugs tonight to hopefully minimise the din created by the over trendy DJ !
