Yorkshire Vikings Vitality T20 Blast at Trent Bridge Loss Report

MALAN 95 TOO MUCH FOR OUTLAWS

Yorkshire won their first match in any competition this season as they triumphed by 8 runs on a cool dank night in Nottingham. Dawid Malan carried his bat for an unbeaten 95 (off 56 balls, 8x4, 4x6) as Yorkshire scored 182 for 7 in their 20 overs. Notts decided to change a winning team bringing in on loan Jack Brooks for his debut in place of the another loanee Conor McKerr. Although he picked up four wickets, Brooks was too expensive on a wicket where timing the ball was not always easy. Notts chasing an over par total lost Clarke early. Whilst Hales was at the crease Notts were probably slight favourites but once he fell for 53 (off 35 balls, 8 x 4) the innings lost momentum. Hales had added 84 in 10.2 overs with Munro for the second wicket with the Kiwi struggling somewhat with his timing. When Munro fell for 46 (off 41 balls, 4x1, 1x6), Notts needed 49 in 4.2 overs but Moores after playing well the previous night at Chester-le-Street was like his fellow left hander struggling to time the ball and finished on a disappointing run a ball 15 when much more was needed from a T20 number five batting at the death.

Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bat, in front of a crowd of 11,059. Afridi (Radcliffe Road End) bowled the opening over and conceded just a single. Malan found the point ropes off Carter, eight off the second over. Four runs plus a leg bye were obtained off the 3rd over bowled by Afridi. Brooks bowled an awful opening over on debut against one of his previous teams. His first ball was a long hop which Malan dispatched for a legside four. Malan found the cover ropes off the fourth ball. Lyth dispatched his last delivery for a low six over extra cover, 17 off the over. Carter conceded three off the 5th over. Another awful long hop from Brooks was dispatched for six over long leg by Malan. Yet another short ball from Brooks was mistimed by Lyth who skied the ball and was caught by Carter at square leg, 41 for one. Luxton was dismissed for a 3-ball duck, another steepling catch this time by Munro running from mid-wicket, Brooks again the bowler. Yorkshire 41 for 2 at the end of the powerplay.

Mullaney conceded four singles in the 7th over. Masood lofted a straight four off Patel and off his later delivery six over mid-wicket, 12 off the over. Malan then deposited Mullaney (2 0 15 0) for a six into the Fox Road Stand, 11 in the 9th over. Montgomery conceded six as Yorkshire stood at 74 for 2 off 10 overs.

Masood hit Carter for four through mid-wicket, nine off the 11th over. Montgomery (2 0 18 1) was hit for six over square leg by Masood, but the off spinner got his revenge having Masood (34 off 23 balls, 2x4, 2x6) caught on the mid-wicket ropes by James , 91 for 3. Wiese hit the last ball of the over to the third man boundary. James conceded five off the 13th over. Wiese hit a four to long leg, the ball somehow alluding Carter, a dreadful bit of fielding. Wiese became Patel's 200th T20 victim for Notts caught at long on by Clarke, 109 for 4 off 14 overs

Malan got to his 50 off 37 balls via a four through backward point off Carter. Malan hit Carter (4 0 33 0) for six over wide long on, the ball just escaping the grasp of the leaping Hales. Malan hit Patel (3 0 28 1) to the mid-wicket ropes, eight of the 16th over. Yorkshire 130 for 4 off 16 overs. Unfortunately Afridi and Brooks were to bowl poorly in the closing 4 overs allowing the Tykes to accrue another 52 runs

Revis hit Afridi for four through extra cover, 11 off the 17th over. Malan got a streaky lofted third man boundary off Brooks. He followed it up with a straight four. Revis (9) fell to a well-judged running catch by Hales from long on as Brooks picked up his third wicket, 151 for 5, 11 off the 18th over. Thompson (1) miscued Afridi and was caught by Carter running back from square leg, 152 for 6. Mike hit consecutive boundaries off Afridi (4 0 29 1) through long leg and the covers, 13 off the penultimate over. Mike (15 off 6 balls) found the point ropes of the first ball of Brooks over but next ball he fell to catch on the cover ropes by Montgomery, 169 for 7. Malan somehow found the backward point ropes off the fourth ball, James failing to stop the ball on the half volley what should have been a single was turned into a boundary. The fifth ball was hit for six over wide long on. Malan hit two off the last delivery. Yorkshire 182 for 7 off 20 overs with Malan on 95 and Bess on 0. Brooks picking 4 wickets but he was far too expensive leaking 51 runs, 17 more than any other bowler on the night. Jake Ball is expected to fit very shortly and should come straight back in the eleven. Whether the powers that be were correct in bringing in panic loan signings is open to conjecture, the likes of Pettman and Hayes have missed out of on valuable first-team experience. Hayes had taken 4-25 at Grace Road earlier in the day in a T20 Second Eleven contest.

Bess (Radcliffe Road End) opened the bowling, Hales hitting him four through mid-on, 10 off the first over. A single off the second ball of the second over saw Hales 11,000 T20 career runs in his 393rd match. The tournament in Dubai earlier in the year did not count in the records.

Clarke (8) hit Wiese for a straight four, but fell next ball top edging a slower ball, keeper Tattersall taking the catch running to point, 15 for one. Munro hit the last ball of the over to the point ropes. Hales hit a single off Bess first delivery but Munro was struggling to time the ball failed to score off the next five balls. Wiese went for seven off the 4th over. Munro hit Mike for four through long off and Hales hit for four through mid-wicket, 10 off the fifth over. Hales found the wide third man ropes off Thompson and next ball he hit him for a straight four, 11 off the over. Notts 48 for 1 off 6 overs.

Bess conceded six off the 7th over. Hales hit the leg spinner Jafer Chohan to the mid-wicket and point ropes, 13 off the over. Revis conceded four off the 9th over. Hales hit Thompson to the mid-wicket ropes, seven off the over. Munro was dropped on 25 by Chohan at wide third man off Revis. Next ball Hales got to his 50 off 30 balls with a straight four off Revis. Munro, who had been bogged, found the long off ropes off the last delivery of the over, 90 for 1 off 11 overs. Munro launched Chohan for 6 into the Pavilion , nine off the over. Chohan who was educated at Harrow School and Loughborough University and has appeared for Berkshire had conceded 22 runs off his 2 overs.

For Notts to have a realistic chance of victory, Hales as he had done 24 hours had to stay in. However he was caught at backward point by Luxton off Wiese, 99 for 2 off 12.1 overs. Notts now needed 84 off 47 balls at 10.72 RPO.

Montgomery, the only Notts batsman other than Hales who could consistently time the ball on the night found the mid-wicket ropes off Wiese, seven off the 13th over. Montgomery edged Bess (4 0 31 0) for four and then swept him for six over square leg, 14 off the over. Munro hit Revis for four through backward point, 9 off the 15th over.

Montgomery hit Thompson for four through extra cover. Munro though was caught at wide long on by Masood off Thompson for 46, 134 for 3 off 15.4 overs. Yorkshire now favourites.

Notts needed 48 off the last 4 overs. Revis (4 0 34 0) bowled successive wides and later a beamer, Moores being bowled off the free hit. As this stage Notts needed more than the 10 they accrued off the 9-ball over. Moores found the mid-wicket ropes off the second ball of Wiese’s over, but only five singles were gathered of the rest of the over. Twenty-nine needed off 2 overs. Montgomery (28 off 19 balls, 3x4, 1x6) was caught low at extra cover by Masood off Mike 157 for 4, 26 required off 8 balls. James hit Mike (2 0 18 1) for four backward of square but Notts now needed 20 off the last over bowled by Jordan Thompson ( 4 0 33 1). Although James hit the third ball for six over long on, no other boundaries were obtained. Moores swished and missed the last ball and finished on a run a ball 15 which included five balls he failed to score off. Notts who had only lost 4 wickets finished on 174 with James unbeaten 11. A disappointing night.

Currently lying fifth, Notts lie within a mini group of four teams including Durham, Worcestershire and Yorkshire chasing the last two qualifying spots. Lancashire and Warwickshire seemingly a cut above the rest, with the East Midlands trio Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Northants offering little. Ball cannot return quick enough. With the Southern Group much stronger, the ageing Notts line-up chances of winning this competition seem slight. Its never been a better time to look more long-term and give some more youngsters a chance before it’s too late……Remember Joey Evison? MAG

  1. A strange game tonight. I felt Notts looked in control in the Yorkshire innings. Shame that a couple of misfields cost boundaries, which eventually proved costly.

In reply, Notts never got ahead of the rate. Not quite enough in the power play, and no real big overs to get over the line. In the end, it proved costly. Hales, Munro and Montgomery got decent scores but got out just as they were about to make a match winning score. Sadly, Moores swung hard but it was one of those Moores innings where he doesnt connect. Notts managed to find a way to lose a tight game. Still, it was a decent night and a good crowd, although bitterly cold for May.

  2. Whilst Hales and Munro were there, we should have walked that. Once Hales went, Munro got a bit pedestrian, and I would have sent Afridi in before Moores. We never pushed the tight 2s, and eventually the run rate caught up with us.

We gave the Puddings too many runs, through poor bowling and bad fielding, and we must learn from that.

  3. Notts do seem to carry a few in the field, No names mentioned but you do need to more athletic in this competition and it's fair to say some team members are somewhat lacking in this department. Calvin Harrison would certainly help redress fielding problems and it's a little bit of a mystery why he has yet to make a season debut in the Blast.

I guess it comes to all teams sooner or later when a successful team start to look less and less effective and that is starting to look the case with Notts 2023, Perhaps now might be the time to start bringing in new blood, Notts at the moment seem to be almost treading water and could do worse than give their younger players a chance to emulate their elders.

  4. 75 NOT OUT
This was the match that got away ! On the Betting Exchange Yorkshire were 15/1 to win it when Hales and Munro were batting ( a pal of mine knows how Notts can blow it and had a tenner on at those odds). Even with Notts needing 10 an over the big crowd ( shivering) were confident of victory with 7 wickets in hand .. The general feeling amongst the crowd where I sat thought sending in Tom Moores up the order was a mistake . He wastes so many valuable balls with mighty heaves that dont connect . Surely with only a few balls to go then Afridi should have gone in before Moores? Afridi recently scored 45 off 15 balls .
At this rate Notts will struggle to reach the quarter finals ?!
That would be a mini disaster for the Clubs finances.

  5. As per usual, there are strange decisions being made by our management team.
Are Mullaney and Patel, being selected solely as bowlers, as it appears that they have retired from batting in this competition, or maybe they are too knackered after bowling and fielding. Also sadly predictably, Notts put more faith in bringing in players from other counties to do a job that their own members of staff could do equally as well. Let us prey, that Notts don't lose any more of their talented youngsters, before Peter Moores leaves the club, hopefully at the end of this current contract.

  6. Should have been chasing about 165 let them get away in the final overa .As for brooks okay took 4 wkts but far too expensive. I wonder what sort of score Notts will set when they have to bat first clearly chasing around 200 seems to be beyond them.

  7. 75,NOT OUT
I was a bit shocked last night about the number of singles that should have been two runs . What with pedestrian fielding by one or two Notrs players it all adds up to tight games being lost .
A really good crowd of 11,000 for a mid week is good .
I walked around the whole ground last night looking for some good value food and drink . The conclusion is that BLAST 20 has nothing to do with cricket ! For Notts ccc its all about selling alcohol at vastly inflated prices .Its just one giant pi** up! Who would ever have thought that 7 pints of ale would set you back almost FIFTY QUID!
