Gloucestershire Metro Bank Cup at Trent Bridge Loss 0 pts Report

MILES' BEST LEADS GLOUCESTERSHIRE ROMP TO A COMFORTABLE VICTORY

Notts chances of qualifying for the Metro Bank knockout phase were considerably diminished when they suffered a comfortable seven wicket defeat to Gloucestershire at Trent Bridge today. On an excellent batting strip with a fast outfield Notts put up a competitive 332 after being put in. Skipper Haseeb Hameed top scoring with 95-ball 105 (9x4, 1x6). Notts though bowled poorly through most of the Gloucestershire reply with left hander Miles Hammond leading the way with a List A best of 157 (off 113 balls, 22x4, 5x6) with the visitors getting home with 20 balls to spare.

Rocket-ruined

After 33 days away from Trent Bridge, Notts brought back Hutton and gave Harrison his first List A match of the season, Montgomery and Pettman made way. Harrison has spent the last month sitting on his backside having not got a game for the Cuckoos in the Trent Bridge nest. This inactivity showed with both bat and ball, probably bowling his worst spell of bowling in Notts colours, bowling long hops, full bungers and wide balls, all this after scoring a 4-ball duck.

Singh Dale (Pavilion End) and Goodman opened the bowling and Notts made a circumspect start; 21-0 after 5 overs. Goodman conceded 11 runs in the sixth over including a four off a free hit by McCann. Slater hit Singh Dale for consecutive fours in the following over. The 50 partnership came up in 50 balls with Slater hitting a short ball from Singh Dale for six over mid-wicket. Slater hit the following delivery for four through extra cover but he fell later in the same over. Failing to move hit feet, Slater (38 off 32 balls, 7x4, 1x6) edged Singh Dale into Bracey's gloves, 56 for 1 in the 9th over. Notts 58 for 1 off 10 overs.

Akhter came on for the 11th over and went for 11 with boundaries for Haynes and Slater. Slow left armer Smith replaced Goodman for the 12th over and had McCann (2) caught at short fine leg by van Buuren, 73 for 2 off 12 overs. In the following over, Haynes (11) was caught by Bracey off Akhter, 73 for 3 in the 13th over. After losing three quick wickets, Hameed and James went for consolidation only 20 runs coming off the next six overs. Hameed hit two boundaries in the 20th over bowled by Smith including a lofted straight drive which brought up the Notts 100.

Ollie Price and van Buuren came on for the 21st and 22nd overs respectively. Notts still chugging along at 134 for 3 after 25 overs. Notts suddenly up the ante with 17 coming off the 29th over bowled by the returning Dale with the Notts 150 being achieved with a four through mid-wicket by Hameed. Later in the same over, James hit the right-arm seamer for two sixes in three balls over square leg and mid-wicket. The 100 partnership was achieved off 104 balls. James reached 50 off 51 balls with a single off Dale. The next ball saw Hameed reach the same milestone off 56 balls with two off Dale. Gloucestershire made a double bowling change for the 32nd and 33rd overs bringing back Smith and Taylor brought himself on. The Notts 200 was achieved in the 35th over via a cover driven boundary by James off Taylor. James (61 off 64 balls, 4x4, 2x6) fell later in the same over cutting Taylor (2-0-16-1) to Singh Dale at backward point; 202 for 4. The 4th wicket had added 129 in 22 overs. Moores then hit a single off the next ball – a no ball. Hameed hitting the free hit for four; 13 off the 35th over. Goodman returned in the 38th over. Akhter (8-0-50-1) went for 13 in the 39th over with boundaries for Moores and Hameed. Hameed hit Goodman for six over square leg. Notts 249 for 4 off. 40 overs.

Hameed 100 off 92 balls with a single off Singh Dale (8-1-66-1) in the 43rd over which went for 11 runs. Hameed (105) was stumped by Bracey off Smith (10 0 46 2), 282 for 5 in the 44th over. Hameed and Moores had added 80 runs in 9 overs for the 5th wicket. The first time Hameed has been stumped in Notts colours. Moores (40 off 32 balls; 2x4, 1x6) hit Goodman for a straight six into the Pavilion but fell next ball caught at long off by Bancroft off Goodman, 290-6 in the 45th over.

Van Buuren returned and Patterson-White smashed him for 6 over mid-wicket and then a single. A rusty Harrison fell for a 4-duck hitting van Buuren low to Akhter at backward point, 297 for 7. The last 4 balls of the 46th over, not scored off, Notts were losing their way. Patterson-White then took 22 off the following over bowled by Goodman (9-0-74-1). The over going 242266. Notts reaching 300 with on driven four by Patterson-White. Patterson-White hit consecutive sixes over square leg and long off. After playing two dot balls off Van Buuren, Hutton skied him high in the air, the bowler taking the catch, 319 for 8 in the 48th over. Hutton had wasted 5 balls for his duck. Lord ran a single off the last delivery, the only run off the over. Lord hit Price for 4 through mid-wicket and then ran a single. Patterson-White (29) was then caught at long on by Bancroft off Price (5-0-35-1), 325 for 9 in the 49th over. Fletcher ran a single then Lord followed up with another boundary through cow corner and a single. Fletcher (1) was caught at long on by Price off van Buuren (7.3-0-40-3). Notts 332 all out off 49.3 overs with Lord undefeated on 12. The ease at which some of the batsmen who are not renowned for hitting the ball suggested although it was a good total it was certainly chaseable.

Pivotal Miss

Hutton (Pavilion End) opened up with a maiden. Hammond was dropped on 13 by Hameed at mid-on off Hutton in the 7th over. A bad miss the captain trying to take the catch one-handed. A crucial miss and the third bad drop by Hameed in successive games following ones at Neath and Guildford. To rub salts in the wounds. Hammond hit Hutton for 6 over square leg and a four in the 9th over. Gloucestershire 58 for 0 off 10 overs.

Lord came on for the 11th over with Bancroft hitting him for consecutive fours, 10 off the over. Gloucestershire accelerating with 30 runs off the previous three overs. Harrison went for 8 off his opening over. Hammond reached his 50 off 46 balls with a single off Lord in the 15th over. Patterson-White came on for the 16th over his opening delivery being hit for four through extra cover off Hammond, seven off the over. The hundred partnership came up in 97 balls with six by Hammond over mid-wicket off Lord. Three balls later, Hammond repeated the shot. Gloucestershire 132 for 0 off 20 overs and now strong favourites, the Notts bowling carrying little wicket taking threat.

Bancroft reached his 50 off 57 balls in McCann's opening over which went for eight. The Gloucestershire 150 came up in the 22nd over which Patterson-White conceded 10 with two boundaries for Hammond. McCann made the breakthrough having Bancroft leg before for 52 (off 61 balls, 7x4); 152 for 1 in the 23rd over. Harrison returned for the following over. Hammond reached his 100 off 81 balls with a single off McCann. Gloucestershire 166 for 1 off 25 overs. Harrison conceded 13 in the 26th over with two boundaries for Hammond and one for Ollie Price. Hammond going passed his previous List A best of 107. Lord went for a single in the 28th over. McCann then went for 13 in the 29th over with two boundaries for Hammond and one for Price with Gloucestershire reaching 200. Lord was hit for six and four off consecutive balls by Hammond; 18 off the 30th over. Gloucestershire storming home on 219 for 1 off 30 overs

Hammond hit Fletcher for six over mid-wicket. Hammond reached 150 off 109 balls with an edged boundary off Harrison. Hammond (157) finally departed lbw to Harrison, 245 for 2 after 33 overs. The second wicket stand between Hammond and Ollie Price raised 84 in just 10.3 overs. Bracey (16) hit Patterson-White for six over long on and then a four off consecutive balls but attempting a divert a Harrison delivery down to fine leg, played the Patterson-White delivery onto his stumps, 276 for 3 off 38 overs. Ben Charlesworth joined Price in the middle and they added an untroubled and unbroken 57 in 8.4 overs to see Gloucestershire home. Patterson-White went for 10 including 4 leg byes. Gloucestershire 289 for 3 off 40 overs.

Ben Charlesworth hit Harrison (10-0-74-1) for 6 over mid-wicket; 7 off the 41st over. Gloucestershire reached 300 via four through long leg by Charlesworth off Lord. Price got to his 50 off 56 balls with a four off Lord (10-0-70-0); nine plus a leg bye off Lord’s last over. McCann and Patterson-White (9-0-62-1) were now bowling together and a single to mid off by Price off McCann (6.4-0-48-1) saw the visitors home. Gloucestershire 333 for 3 off 46.4 overs with Ollie Price on 61 (off 64 balls, 7x4) and Ben Charlesworth on 24. An easy victory in the end, the Notts bowlers struggling for a consistent line and length throughout most of the innings after Hutton (5-1-26-0) and Fletcher (6-0-41-0) had kept a tight rein for the first 8 overs. The dropping of Hammond proving pivotal.

Fifth in the table, Notts' qualification hopes are now out of their hands and they have to win their last two remaining games and hopes other results go for them. With the wicket likely to be the same on Sunday against Essex it is clear another player who can clear the boundary has to be included in the Eleven, King must play. MAG

SPOILER ALERT!

No typo, yes this game is at Trent Bridge. The excuses used for Notts being expelled in previous summers during the reign of the parasitic Rocket cuckoos were obviously not true.

  • There's no shortage of wickets on the square (we've had a Test Match and we've had additional Blaze matches to accommodate this year already as well)
  • There's no shortage of space for the various squads equipment either (The Blaze now call Trent Bridge home also)
  • The KP Crisps branding can't be an unsurmountable obsticle after all
  • The match day staffing doesn't appear to be an issue either

What were the other lame excuses given for sending us off to remote pastures in previous Augusts?

Obviously they were all exaggerated and just needed a barrage of complaints at Members' Forums to just melt away.

Food for thought with regards to other tales that we are being spun currently...

Remember that there's a information session at half time in this game, about the sale of the franchise teams. What tales will be spun there?

On matters cricket surrounding this game, Outlaws sit third in the table and after Leicestershire defeat on Tuesday, now currently have their own fate to be decided by their own results, a play off position on merit. The DLS reduced defeat at Grace Road now working to our advantage? It certainly limited the damage of a poor bowling performance brought about by the poor team balance.

Gloucestershire are level on points with Outlaws but have played and lost one extra game.

However, Gloucestershire have the potential to spoil everything for the Outlaws.

    COME ON NOTTS!
We need to rescue something out of a poor season so far . At least give the faithfull the chance of seeing us in the Metro Cup final ! It would at least put another 2000/4000 extra bums on seats !

  2. Did you see the empty seats at The Bridge last night for TR v LS. Its a hard sell on a Wednesday night even during August.

  3. According to The Grumbler, this was on The Mail Online

“This week, Trent Rockets welcomed 12,363 for the visit of Birmingham Phoenix. Five years ago, that was more or less Nottinghamshire’s average home Twenty20 attendance.

“On Thursday, there were 15,716 for London Spirit’s match against Welsh Fire at Lord’s. In August 2019, a Vitality Blast match there between Middlesex and Hampshire pulled in 27,000. Its first 20 years ago drew 26,500.

“There is no doubt that aligning matches is promoting the women’s game, but the audience appears to be diminishing, despite the ECB’s claim of 96 per cent occupancy for last year.”

  4. Pravda have Harrison in squad?

    1. So they do. Mr Moores must have decided that the squad was light on spinners after he pushed Fateh Singh off to Worcester.

Obviously Harrison is in need of a game, (in readiness for the return to real cricket) so Moores will make a space available for him, but who deserves to be left out of the winning team?

  5. Tom Moores ?
    Don't by silly, Rich.

  6. Did the under 12s play at TB yesterday? The ropes are about ten paces from the wicket. Thus turning the entire affair into a slogathon rather than a balanced fifty over game.

  7. In a galaxy of poor performances in this blighted season, this has to go down as our worst in the field. Utterly awful bowling, keeping, fielding. Body language of 'we're beaten' from the first powerplay onwards. They look completely knackered for some reason.

  8. Surely you made a slight error there? Keeping! What with the great flapper Moores?

    1. Actually think he's okay standing back, but standing up to slow stuff? He basically keeps with his shins.

  9. He's awful. Iv watched him and he's no county regular keeper and that was obvious last summer. I worry that the coach cannot see it. Oh wait.

  10. Firstly, I will say well batted Miles Hammond. However, when you bowl and field as badly as that - at least a 4 ball every over, balls going through legs, misses behind the stumps, then you are never going to defend 330 odd.

I also wonder why Lyndon James didnt bowl?

Calvin Harrison looked thoroughly cheesed off throughout.

Why did Brett Hutton not bowl some additional overs in the middle.

I wonder if Notts thought they had enough, and were shell shocked when Gloucester started well. However with 330 in the bank, you only need a tight 5 or so overs, and it is game on again.

There really must be a shake up in the coaching staff. Shocking in a shocking season.

  11. Good batting performance overall, although we perhaps left twenty or thirty runs out there. I Had to leave at Three, but when I looked online it was 200-1. What on earth happened?, was our bowling so bad?

    1. Definitely thirty to forty runs too short; not helped by losing the three quick wickets that meant a period of consolidation was required and we also didn't make much use of the short boundary that Gloucestershire did so well.

    2. Hameed's dropping of Hammond was expensive.

  12. We can still get through to quarter finals

    1. Leicester are two points to the good in the race for third, we need Glammy to beat them on Sunday, win our last two games and hope that Yorkshire don't have a massive win in either of their two last games. So yes we can still qualify for the third spot. BUT!

  13. Fateh Singh 12 wickets for Pears so far. No Notts bowler is anywhere close to that many. He has had a top score of 60 as well. Does Moores pick the team to give his players (you know who I mean) a game rather than pick the best side to win matches in this competition?

    1. Yes,
Singh has had a successful all round tournament for Worcester.
He is arguably as good as, or possibly a better bowler than Patterson White, but isn't as strong in either the batting or fielding aspects.
McCann looked our best spinner yesterday, which says everything about how Harrison and LPW bowled.

  14. Foxes free pass to third place with Glos losing 3 players to the Lions.
