Nottinghamshire Members' Forum

Wednesday 07/09/2016

The lunchtime members forum passed very peacefully, all that needed to be said had already been included in the press releases yesterday. At the high table were Mick, Lisa and Chairman Richard Tennett. Will Gidman was discussed and Mick Newell said he considered him a worse bowler than those currently playing against Middlesex; he was very much signed at a number eight batsman who could bowl to follow in the footsteps of Paul Franks and Mark Ealham. He said the situation would be reassessed at start of next season as he still has a year left on his contract. Peter Moores would be in charge of all first team matters and Mick says he personally would not be seen in his Red coaching top next season. There was little anticipation of much player movement in or out during the winter. Mick did say that he was very disappointed with the red ball efforts of Lumb and Wessels, Brendan Taylor's name was never mentioned. Peter Moores would have to decide the composition of his coaching staff. MAG

Nottinghamshire has announced that Peter Moores has been appointed, in a new position created, as Head Coach as from 1st October. Mick Newell will continue as Director of Cricket but Moores will now have control of the professional cricketers at the club, picking teams and also being charge of the coaching staff.

MN

“Peter will run the professional squad his way, he’ll pick the team and we’ll now work closely together in reviewing everything we do in relation to our playing and coaching, to ensure that we’re ready to bounce back strongly from what’s been a disappointing season."

..................................
Wednesday lunchtime is the Notts Members' Forum in the Randall Suite. The timing of the event, in the last home game of the season, won't be terribly convenient for many working members as the whole game is timed for mid-week, whatever happened to Sunday starts?

What questions would supporters wish could be asked, assuming all the questioning time isn't monopolised by the usual stooges, who compliment the club on the state of the teas in the pavilion "but could we have lemon drizzle cake on day 2s instead of day 3s next season?" or complain about the length of the queues for the toilets at the ODI. You get the idea, waffle about trivialities and not on the collective failures within the club.

Assuming someone reads these questions, and that someone attends the forum, then perhaps some of the feelings of supporters can have an airing.

One brazen question would be to ask, when are you going to resign Mr Newell? That would prompt, "I'm not, next question please", so wouldn't get supporters anywhere.

A question for Lisa might be, what would constitute a poor season for the club and what might the repercussions be, as to not have a repeat? Then again the response would be, "loses are within the projected expectations, attendances are up year on year for Twenty-20 home matches, boosted by a record Quarter-Final match receipts. This year has been a success and we look forward to visitors and purses from some different counties in 2017, who too can enjoy the new range of Trent Bridge souvenirs in our new freshened-up outlets. Trends are very positive and should the new city franchise be rubber stamped on the 14th, my views on which I am not allowed to discuss, then I'm sure Trent Bridge will be one of the venues used, possibly, members have nothing to fear and I'm sure I am of the same view as yourselves, not that I can discuss that".

A glib question would be, who is Jake Ball, he doesn't play for Notts anymore and nor does he play for England?

Another question could be, having put all of your efforts into the Twenty-20 competition 2016, even when you have said that the championship is the priority, why come the semi-final did you play such an unbalanced side by picking Stuart Broad, especially as you were seduced by the prospect having Andre Russell back, regardless of what that would mean to a winning formula that saw Outlaws win nine matches in a row?

Why persist with selecting batsmen, and bowlers, totally out of form for so long? We appreciate no one in the second eleven is knocking on the door too loudly but anyone in that second eleven could perform to a similar level as to senior incumbents have been doing, if not better. Tom Moores and Luke Wood are prime examples.

So what questions need to asked?

  2. I still think an apportioned question would be, under what circumstances would a change of Director of Cricket be deemed appropriate?

  3. Does it matter? Will they pay any attention? Do they care what we think?

  4. A few weeks ago when Leicestershire's coach resigned to go back to his native Australia It was suggested that they might look in the direction of Peter Moore's ,However according to the Cricinfo correspondentit seems that would not be likely to happen as because as they understood the situation he was likely to be offered a greater role at Notre ... Mick moving upstairs maybe ?

    1. With regards to 2016 - stable door closing and bolting horses, spring to mind. At least there wasn't any blood spilt, but perhaps it should have happened 12 months earlier.

  7. So Newell will basically be doing paperwork and organising hotels for away games. One big 'PHEW' for the future of Nottinghamshire cricket.

  8. I am going to be there. at some point will raise the issue of the Big City 20/20 competition, if nobody else does, but will wait for the "performance" questions first. The big meeting re the Big City comp is relevant is it about the future of cricket in our county and across England and Wales. Richard Day

  9. The appointment of Moores changes nothing whilst Newell is still DofC. Weak from the board

  10. Newell has commented in an evening post article today that youngsters should be given a greater role in division 2.

He also stated his disappointment that both Hutton and Luke Wood have not kicked on this season.

Well,he only picked Hutton last season because Gidman was found wanting and a Luke Wood has not been selected by him for most of this year.

Poor old Mick,he really has lost the plot.

  11. Members forum Notts. On Big City Franchise 20/20, members expressed their strong opposition. Club played a straight bat, said very little.

Members forum Notts. Members expressed their views strongly re performance.
