Warwickshire RLODC at Edgbaston Win

SLATS TON MAKES IT 3 FROM 3
as Outlaws give Bears a thrashing

Another dominant batting performance saw Notts easily beat Warwickshire by 118 runs at Edgbaston today. Notts had a slightly fortuitous start where there were a few streaky edges and Ben Slater was badly put down at slip on 5, Notts managed to score an above par 301.

Slater and Clarke (39) added 81 in 12 overs. Then Notts lost 4 wickets in seven overs, two to Jeetan Patel but with the wicket taking spin he inexplicitly took himself off and let Notts rebuild the innings. Slater went to score an excellent 100 off 115 balls (15 x 4) and added 95 with Mullaney who scored a typical attacking 40. Then valuable runs were scored down the order by Fletcher (32), Pattinson (33) and Carter (21 not out – List A best). Warwickshire made a disastrous start to their innings being 22 for 4 off the first 37 balls of the innings. Carter removed the hard hitting Pollock for a duck. Then Fletcher hit the stumps twice, which is becoming a regular feature this season. Fletcher finished with 3 for 21 and Carter 3 for 60. Pattinson was too hot to handle once more with 7-0-22-2. The only batting highlights for Warwickshire was an excellent 57 from youngster Liam Banks and a stand of 61 for ninth wicket between Alex Thomson (55) and George Panayi (24 not out), but once Fletcher and Pattinson returned it was game over. Warwickshire being bowled out with 73 balls unused.

Notts won the toss and elected to bat, the one change being Chappell replacing Ball. Despite a prediction of wall to wall sunshine, there were only brief sunny interludes on a predominantly cloudy day. Woakes (City) and Brooks (Pavilion) opened the bowling. In the third over Slater attempting a pull shot off Woakes was hit on the helmet. There followed an 8 minute stoppage as per the concussion protocol. When playing recommenced Slater on 5 was put down by Sibley at second slip off Woakes, a regulation chance. Notts rode their luck somewhat particularly against Woakes. Notts stood at 65 for 0 after 10 overs.

George Panayi replaced Brooks and in a reprise of his Derby dismissal, Clarke (39 off 34 balls – 6 x4, 1 x 6) was caught on the deep square leg ropes by Alex Thomson; Notts 81 for one in the 12th over. Duckett (3) departed in Panayi's next over, he pulled a slower ball from the right arm seamer straight to Jeetan Patel at mid wicket, 85 for 2. Libby trying to cut a ball to close to his body was bowled by Patel for 10, 98 for 3 in the 19th over. With all eleven men in the circle Samit Patel fell second ball leg before to his namesake for 0, 98 for 4. A cover drive boundary by Slater off Panayi brought his 50 off 64 balls. Thomson replaced Patel from the City End as Slater edged the off spinner for consecutive fours. Two pulled fours by Slater off Brooks brought up the 50 stand for the fifth wicket with Mullaney. Mullaney was dropped by Tim Ambrose on 26, the keeper getting his finger tips to a ball from Will Rhodes (City End). In his next over, Rhodes got his man with Mullaney edging him into Ambrose's gloves for 40. The fifth wicket had added 95 runs. Slater reached his 100 off 111 balls with an edged two off for the returning Patel. In his next over, Patel got one to turn and Slater was bowled for 100, 206 for 6. Two balls later Moores was leg before to Patel for 8, 207 for seven. Fletcher hoisted Thomson for six over mid wicket and then was dropped off successive balls by Hain at mid wicket and Panayi at long off. Patel got hit for sixes in last over by Pattinson and Fletcher over mid wicket, but next ball Fletcher perished going for a repeat shot, caught in ropes by Woakes for 32, 257 for eight. Pattinson (33) hit Brooks into the Raebank Stand but next over was caught on the covers ropes by Hain, 275 for nine. Chappell and Carter saw out the innings adding an unbroken 26 with Carter hitting the last two balls of the innings for four (both full tosses by Woakes). Notts 301 for nine. Jeetan Patel 5 for 45, Woakes 10-0-65-0.

Fletcher bowled a maiden in the opening over of the Bears' reply. Carter bowled the second over from the City End and with his second ball had Pollock leg before for a duck. Sibley (9) lost his middle stump to Fletcher off the last ball of the fifth over, 20 for two. With the very next ball, Pattinson who replaced Carter removed Sam Hain caught behind by Moores for nine. Ambrose lost his off stump to Fletcher departing for a golden duck, 22 for four. Pattinson had a five over blast (1 for 18) from the City End and Carter returned and with his third ball a sharp stumping from Moores removed Rhodes for 17, 59 for five in the 16th over. In his next over Woakes was leg before to Carter for 1, 69 for six. Chappell bowled 4-0 -26-0 from the Pavilion End and Patel replaced him for the 21st over and he went for 12 as Banks hit him for a four and a six. Banks was batting impressively, hitting Patel for another six over mid wicket. However going for one big shot too many was caught at long on by Pattinson off Patel for 57 (60 balls, 5 x 2, 2 x 6), 111 for seven in the 25th over. Patel picked up his second wicket as Brooks (0) hit him straight to Duckett at mid on, 116 for eight. Chappell returned for another three over spell, but still awaits his maiden wicket for Notts. Alex Thomson raced to a run a ball 50 hitting out against Carter and Patel. James Pattinson came on from the Pavilion End and his extra paced did the trick bowling Thomson 55 (61 balls, 6 x 4, 1 x 6), 177 for nine. It was left to Fletcher to take the last wicket getting Jeetan Patel leg before for 4. Warwick 183 all out; another fine performance from Notts.. MAG

2 wins from 2 so far; 2 very different games too. Warwickshire, without their Bears in order to differentiate the brand with Birmingham in the Blast, will present a different fish in a different kettle...

"Bears" will be lacking several familiar thorns in Outlaw sides from previous encounters but in spite of their recent lame performance at Wantage Road the whole package is still liable to explode, as Outlaws saw last season when we were on the receiving end. Enough mixed metaphors now, the 14 is likely to remain the same unless injuries have been picked-up or Coggers' finger has started wagging.

Alex Hales, whatever the true circumstances are at this moment, if he is to honour his committment to appear at the England training camp next weekend, has only this game and Friday's to prove something to selectors, although there is a SET match at York CC, if a different surroundings helps to break the ice.

They say the Michelin starred chef will be making SIX appearance at Trent Bridge this season but will that be more or less than Baz and Coughlin?

  2. Now I may not know a lot about cricket but I am pleased to join that group of equally unlearned ones who advocated that Matt Carter play. Occasionally we are right!!! He brings something extra and, like Luke Fletcher, has the potential to become another Notts well-liked legend. - perhaps the Michelin Chef is another one!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another good team performance. We suspected we would go well in this comp.Good to see @bennyslats producing the goods, there were some doubts(myself included)he could step up from Div2 with an uninspiring record. Delighted he's proving us wrong.Strong effort from the tail. Complete difference to last years team. Yes AndrewM1 good to see Carter playing, he can also hold a willow which is a bonus. Apparently on Sunday for FFD Nutts the squirrel is the Head Chef in Cafe Six

  6. Matt Milnes currently has more wickets than James Pattinson and more runs than Ben Duckett after 4 rounds of cup games

  7. That's an interesting observation on Milnes, but rather a pity he has been on the losing side in all 4 matches to date!!!!!!!!!

Belated congratulations to Matt Carter on his Edgbaston batting. Always a psychological victory for the last batsman to take the team over the 300 mark off the last couple of deliveries. Woakes was obviously well pissed off.
