Pattinson Expected to Leave Early

NP Matt Davies 03/05/19

With Australia A starting their tour on 20th June, James Pattinson looks set to leave Notts earlier than first anticipated, Matt continues the item;

Notts are hoping to persuade Cricket Australia to let Pattinson delay his departure from Trent Bridge, but director of cricket Mick Newell concedes that is highly unlikely.

"I would have thought he'll leave early. He's in one day and four day squads for Australia A," he said.

"When that one day group gets together will definitely be before he was meant to leave here.

"Governing bodies are protective of their players and we're expecting them to be protective of him.

"If you go back to January and February when we started talking to Jimmy, he wasn't playing for Victoria because of injury.

"He wasn't really on Cricket Australia's radar, but then he comes back and takes a load of wickets. Suddenly he's right in the frame for the Ashes.

"That impacts on the cricket they will want him to play ahead of the Ashes."

Pattinson's situation will have an impact on Notts' pursuit of a second overseas player in the Vitality Blast, as would Paul Coughlin's latest injury blow.

Notts are waiting to hear how long Coughlin will be out for with a hamstring problem, but the signs are not overly promising as he walked around the outfield at Grantham CC with the aid of crutches on Friday.

Newell says the club will decide if they need a new overseas player who can play in the County Championship, T20 tournament or both once they get more concrete news on Pattinson and Coughlin.

  1. Seems likely that Coughlin could be out for some time, If you factor in the early loss of Pattinson, Then it seems likely Notts attack will need strengthening.

Having watched the Windies series earlier this year and seeing their fast bowlers in action you would have to think that might be a good place to start your search, Hampshire do not seem to have fared too badly employing one of their quicks, Okay maybe none of their bowlers are in Patto's class, But then few are!

Trouble is Notts attack without a fast bowler is like a tiger without teeth and claws, All threat and nothing to back it up with,You only have to look at our first two championship matches to see what I mean.

  3. Completely agree, Zanga. I fear for our Championship survival if we don't recruit a strong replacement.

Hari Krishna will be back from his loot filled Jollies in India but doubt we will be able to lure him back. I see he is batting number ten in the IPL so we could try and entice him to stop those regular four day collapses. Joking apart we must get a top quality pace bowler as Patto's replacement to avoid a three way fight with Warwickshire and Kent for the one relegation spot in the Championship.

  6. The thing is, we signed a so called fast bowler from neighbouring Leicestershire at the end of last season , that no one is talking about.

On the evidence of his brief appearances so far, Chappel slows down when approaching the crease instead of the opposite . Pretty basic stuff for a half decent bowling coach who has supposedly been working with him all winter.
Jake Ball also appears to be falling away on his follow through - hence his results do far.

Having watched Matt Milnes recently for Kent, he has improved considerably, since leaving Notts, and has upped his pace .

    I wonder why.

So yes, we do need a replacement for when Pattinson departs , considering our current options available.

Assume you're referring to White Lightning Mustafa ? Was never convinced he was much more than an honest tryer albeit had only limited opportunities but I certainly take your point

Ah yes the perennial problem. Lyndon James and Jack Blatherwick are on the 1st team fringes. Also there's the lesser spotted Footitt toiling away still in the stiffs
