Somerset RLODC SF at Trent Bridge Loss

OUTLAWS SECOND BEST

To Efficient Somerset

Somerset cruised to the Royal London Cup Final with a comprehensive 115 run victory over Notts in today’s Semi, the Cidermen being better with the bat, the ball and in the field and fully deserved their victory. Notts have yet to win a game this season without James Pattinson and he was badly missed as the visitors scored an above par 337 as Harry Gurney had a nightmare return from a successful winter leaking 86 runs. Tom Banton son of former Notts batsman Colin followed up his impressive century at New Road with 59 today and was well supported by Azhar Ali with 72 and veteran Peter Trego with 73.
Notts had fought back well in after Somerset were 189 for two in the 29th over as the visitors sank to 289 for eight with five overs remaining. Crucially the Overton twins added 47 in five overs to see Somerset to their impressive total. The wicket  was not quite The Road seen in previous games at Trent Bridge. Jake Ball took 4 for 62, and was well supported by Fletcher, Patel and Mullaney. Carter foolishly bowled in overs 7 and 9 during the power play conceded 30 in two overs including 24 off one over as Banton tore into him and he was never seen again. When Notts batted, Ben Slater (58) was again in impressive form and added 72 on 11 overs with Hales (54). However Slater’s dismissal was followed by a stupid shot by Duckett who seems at the moment to be dealing exclusively with aerial shots. Notts lost their last nine wickets for 112 runs in 21 overs as the Somerset attack proved once again far too good for the home side and reached their first Lord’s final since 2011. Slow left armer van der Merwe finished with 9-0-29-3 dismissing Duckett, Patel and Moores.

Notts won the toss and elected to bowl on a sunny day in front of crowd of 4,000. Harry Gurney after his very successful  global T20 tour returned to the team as he replaced James Pattinson who had a side strain. Fletcher (Pavilion End) and Ball (Radcliffe Road End) opened the bowling. Ball was the more expensive of the two, dropping short too many times. Carter replaced him for the seventh over. In his second over Carter was hit for successive six sixes over long on by Banton. Another six followed off the fourth ball as Banton took 24 off the over, 69 for 0 off 10 overs.

Fletcher after five overs for 17 made way for Samit Patel, a single off the slow left armer saw Banton to 50 off 44 balls. Gurney came on for the twelfth over and conceded a dozen. An excellent ball from Gurney moved and shot up and found Banton's edge as he departed caught Moores for 59 (55 balls), 93 for one after 14 overs.Trego had a let off on 3 when he edged Patel between Moores and first slip Carter and to rub salt in the wounds he then hit Patel for a leg side six. Gurney had a five over spell for 32 then on came Steven Mullaney from the Radcliffe Road End.

Dropped

Trego was dropped on 44 on the mid wicket ropes by Duckett off Mullaney, a difficult chance diving to his left. Azhar Ali going for shot over mid wicket was bowled by Ball for 72 off 71 balls, 183 for two. A slower delivery from Ball saw Hildreth caught and bowled one-handed for one, 145 for 3, two wickets in the 29th over. A boundary through extra cover off  Mullaney saw Trego to 50 off 48 balls. Abell ramped Fletcher for 4 but going for a repeat was caught by Moores for 22, 227 for four.  Bartlett (0) lasted two balls before losing his off stump to Mullaney, 228 for five. A mix up between Gregory and Trego saw the latter run out by Mullaney for 73, Gregory hitting the ball on the leg side hesitated and ran back and left Trego stranded as Mullaney through the stumps down, 252 for six. Mullaney 10-0-52-1.

Dropped

Gregory was badly dropped at mid off by Mullaney off Harry Gurney when on 18. Jake Ball returned replacing the expensive Gurney and he removed Gregory caught at deep mid on by Duckett for 37,the ball in the air for a long time, 287 for 7 in the 45th over. Van  der Merwe was dismissed in the same over caught low down at cover by Mullaney for 11, 289 for eight. Gurney got hit for two sixes in the 48th over by the Overton twins, Gurney 10-0-86-1. Jamie Overton was run out by Moores off the penultimate ball for 27. The ninth wicket had added 47 in five overs.  Davey going for a two was run out by Duckett for 1, 337 all out off 50 overs. Craig Overton 20 not out. Ball 4 for 62.

Clarke was out in the seventh over of the reply caught at mid wicket by Azhar Ali off Craig Overton (Pavilion End) for 14, 38 for one. Hales hit Davey for 6 and 4 off successive balls as Notts closed the first power play on 66 for one.

Hales and Slater were in fine form the 50 partnership came up in 44 balls via a cover driven four by Slater off Gregory (Pavilion End). In the same over Slater got to his 50 off 52 balls with a leg side two.

Pop-up and bounce

Jamie Overton got a ball to pop up and Slater hit the ball to mid wicket where van der Merwe took the catch, 110 for two in the 18th over. Slater 58 in  60 balls (8x4,1x6). Duckett (1) played a reverse sweep off van der Merwe and found Craig Overton on the cover ropes, 125 for three in the 21st over. An edged four off Gregory saw Hales to 50 off 42 balls. Craig Overton got a bit of extra bounce and found Hales edge as keeper Banton took the catch, Hales 54 off 51 balls (6x4,1x6) 131 for 4 in the 24th over. Patel fell unluckily leg before to van der Merwe in the next over, 135 for five. Moores (16) lasted 15 balls before holing out to long on where Jamie Overton took the catch on the run, 156 for six. A third wicket for van der Merwe. Mullaney and Fletcher added 30 in six overs before Mullaney making room was bowled leg stump by Davey for 29, 186 for seven. Carter perished for a four ball caught on the square leg ropes by Bartlett off Azhar Ali, 197 for eight. Fletcher though was still enjoying himself hoisting  Azhar Ali for two straight sixes. Ball was caught first ball at cover by Abell off Davey, 203 for nine. Fletcher hit Davey for two sixes in the 37th over which went for 14.

Lame

Gurney then had to call for a runner due to a hamstring injury, Mullaney having to come back out. Fletcher hit the next ball for four but fell straight after caught by Azhar Ali in front of the Pavilion off Gregory. Fletcher had scored 43 off 31 balls (2x4,4x6) in an entertaining cameo. Somerset had fielded like tigers and on the day their bowling was far much better. Notts had been well beaten.

All supporters will be hoping that Pattinson will be fit for Chelmsford on Tuesday as the rusty Broad is due to return to the line up after a 31 day break. The bowling remains a real worry. Fletcher is bowling his heart out but Notts will not want a repeat of last year where he ran out of steam due to over use. Gurney’s ability to bowl magic balls will be sadly missed in the championship. Ball’s form remains very much up and down. Coughlin is lame and Chappell is struggling for form and pace. A fit Pattinson will make a massive difference. MAG

Forget the fourteen man squad that's got us so far, Notts have "upped" their game and announced a fifteen man squad:

Ben Slater
Joe Clarke
Ben Duckett
Alex Hales
Samit Patel
Steven Mullaney
Tom Moores
Chris Nash
James Pattinson
Luke Wood
Luke Fletcher
Zak Chappell
Matt Carter
Jake Ball
Harry Gurney

Anyone see Billy Rooooooot last night? CLEARLY a player in there somewhere if you can get his head right but perhaps we've got too many of those at the club already There's been some incredible games in this years comp. so what a pity it will be in theory at least a poor imposter from 2020.

  2. Much as I enjoyed his many great white ball innings for us I don't want to see Rikki coming back to TB and destroying us! Never understood his leaving

  3. Riki wanted to play all formats for Notts, so I am told, and with the influx of new batsmen he wouldn't be an automatic choice for the 4 day stuff. To be frank, he hasn't done much in the Championship in recent years anyway. How many reserve keepers do we need for pity's sake. Devastating in the white ball game, but so can Tom Moores.

Also, I have it on decent authority he wasn't too happy with Baz's contract remaining the same(for much much less work). Whilst Riki can be devastating like most players in this category he is inconsistent and is very unlikely to unleash something like that again I would suggest(famous last words). Think the Raptors will be the more difficult contest. They're a tight knit white ball side who know their roles with some match winners, albeit having lost their best player to us.

  6. Difficult to call who will win between Worcestershire and Somerset, Both are excellent one day teams and either will be difficult to beat, Having said they do play a Notts team who must now be full of confidence after their Samit inspired victory over Northants.

The ECB have certainly squeezed this competition into the calendar,You only have to look at the fact that the quarter finalists have to play another match less than 48 hours later, Whether that will help Notts is anyone's guess, Whichever team wins through could still be high come Sunday, Equally they could also be tired after their exertions, All we can say is Notts at their best can with the help of a large home crowd can beat anyone.

Looking at the scorecard from the Northants match it looks like a few batters owe us some runs, What better time to produce the goods this weekend...

  7. It appears likely now that our opponents in the semi-final will be Somerset.

The question is will Stuart Broad be considered for this match or will he be rested until the final, if we reach there.

No mention is made of him on the Notts website, It would be wonderful to know the reason he is not being considered.

    Is it?:-

    Injured

Not good enough to get into the team

ECB says he has to rest since it is only 27 days since he last played, That was against Somerset.

Fred Trueman used to play a 5 day test and the next day turn out for Yorks and bowl around 25 overs in the day.

Lancs are playing Anderson again. He is playing against Middlesex. He is 35 and Stuart is 32.

My bet is that the ECB don't want Notts to play him and their words MUST BE OBEYED!!

Why do Notts keep us in the dark?

Possible answers to this would be greatly appreciated

Do we want a rusty&rested Broad anyway? But I take your points regarding the yellow brick road site. So a decent side but nowhere near the outfit that used to blast teams away but then bottle it in the final with the likes of Tresco PollardButtler Thomas etc.I am pretty confident if our batting unit fires we win the game.At least we will be spared Rikki flaying an average attack around if nothing else

  8. Looks more than possible that Harry Guerney might be playing in Patto's place,So on the one hand we lose JP's extra pace, But replace it with HG's guile , Rest of the team picks itself,Unless that is we find a way of including Ben Slatet

It's going to be tight but Notts do have home advantage which gives them the opportunity to prepare a wicket to their strengths, Which probably means a wicket something similar to the Lancashire match.

Yes, Zanga if Patto is unavailable for such a big game surely Harrai Gurai HAS to play on the basis he does have a white ball contract with us after all. Squad news on Pravda later will be very interesting. Does a fit again@bennyslats come in for Gnasher or do we try to keep the same team wherever possible without making too many changes. If you're reading this mags couldn't make it down the Bay yesterday as had to do a full days impromptu training without any prior notice and as being part-time left me spitting feathers all day.

    2. Won't the "road" near the middle of the square be reserved for the coming ODI/WC games? Tough call on Slater / Nash decision, both have done a job for Outlaws.

  9. Second best in the bowling department
Second best in the batting department
Second best in the fielding department.

But why did we choose to bowl on winning the toss?

  10. Doubt it would have made any difference if we had batted first, Notts seem to have problems with the the Somerset attack, Probably memories of the CC match a few weeks ago are still too fresh in their minds..

Sadly I was not able to get to the match today but looking at various reports it seems to me Dave G sums it up best in two words Second Best, Notts need to add some backbone to ther batting, At the moment they look rather too flaky and always seem likely to collapse when the pressure is on.

At least this defeat is still really early in the summer, So there is plenty of time to rectify matters, Hopefully they will begin that recovery next week...

    1. We need to get Brathwaite back on a Kolpak and a proper fast bowler as overseas replacement, if we need one sooner than expected.

  11. Good start in the chase then lose a couple of wickets which can happen. So obvious that it was time to take stock and to rebuild a solid middle order partnership. Enter one Ben Ducket who inexplicably, irresponsibly and selfishly obviously doesn’t give twopence and instantly chucks his wicket away! Don’t tell me ‘oh that’s the way he plays’ because in those circumstances a proper pro doesn’t!

Ironic we've already got Pike, at times in the field it was like we also had Jones, Fraser&Godfrey as it was like seeing Dads Army out there. We have surely to be one of the worst in this department of all the 18 counties. There's more to winning one dayer than getting your batting unit to blast teams away. Sometimes they will self destruct like yesterday under the huge pressure of chasing a monster score down. Duckett is one of my favourite players but he should be fined for getting out like that whilst we had Baz going so well at the other end. For an international player it was appalling. So that's twice the cidermen have come to our place and done a job on us. Food for thought for the DoC Mull and the coaching team? One final point on the lack of athleticism in the field it's ironic that the Tin Man from Durham can just never stay injury free and a bowler from Grace Road who went on tour with England Lions over the winter is nowhere to be seen these days.

  13. Must have been extremely disappointing for the home crowd to see Notts comprehensively beaten. BTW Gurney also started to leak runs in the IPL in the last couple of matches. Death bowler went for 22 off last over in last but one match IIRC.

Buckle down now Notts and get a win at Essex again.

Patto was either going to get crocked, called back early or a combination of both. A ridiculous decision in an Ashes summer by the powers that be. This is not hindsight it was obviously always going to happen. Anyone could surely see that?

    1. But he is a match winner, 6 out of 6 when he has played. Whether Somerset would have got 337 with him on the pitch is doubtful, he would have conceded a lot loss and picked up more wickets. Is getting to a semi a disaster? 14 teams failed to do so.
However 3 championship games without an overseas player is not good news, especially for a team winless in this format in nine games, including six hammerings in the last eight.....

Completely agree Michael, PROVIDED hes out there on the pitch. It was always a gamble as devastating as he is?
