One Year On, (since we last won a game)

STILL WAITING

At Chelmsford 365 days ago Notts were on the cusp of their last Championship win, since then:-

An unhappy series of unfortunate events over the last 14 games.

  • Is it just being unlucky with injuries
  • Coincidence that players are out of form at the same time; some players haven't shown much form in 12 months now, and still counting
  • Poor on field decisions
  • The no toss rule, the new balls, the use of the heavy roller

Players current and from the recent past have rallied around the squad; indeed the squad is comprised of now relatively young players who have shown great skill and potential before arriving at Trent Bridge or have shown bags of skill and potential at Trent Bridge in the past on occasions. PM explains that "young players are inconsistent", and to a degree we have seen that this season. Therefore the skill of the coach must be to blend the exciting young players with the seasoned professionals that you rely on to deliver a consistent product.

  • The seasoned professionals aren't delivering much product, apart from Fletcher and he's not the kind of bowler that will bowl sides out twice, he would have to bowl unchanged through both innings and then we wouldn't see him again  for the rest of the year if he did.
  • No, the bowlers, the cartel, aren't delivering
  • No, the seasoned batters aren't delivering, only Nash is showing any kind of consistency and his average is just "average"
  • Too many batsmen are getting out to "one day shots" regularly
  • No one values their own wicket
  • On field discipline is sliding, questioning of umpiring decisions is getting to be common-place - you just have to watch online footage of wickets and see some reactions, a lot are getting away with very long pauses with questioning glances, it's only a matter of time before the line is crossed officially
  • Too many chances are being dropped, this isn't club cricket
  • The gems between the turds served up by the "inconsistent" younger players are much too few and much too far between
  • How many chances does one player deserve if they aren't contributing anything?
No one doubts the players and coaching staff are working their socks off behind the scenes but the run of disappointment continues. If you accept that the players that we now have are, on paper, very good individuals then you have to question the abilities of those trying to coach them into being a very good championship team.

  1. Member Forum: What's the betting that this will be an 'exercise in deflection'? The 'top brass' will have their responses to awkward questions rehearsed in advance with references to injuries; difficulty in recruiting overseas players; the weather; the ECB schedule of different Matches and Competitions and the relatively small (and ageing) playing squad. The skill will be in Members being able to ask the right sort of questions without getting all angry and worked up.

    1. Hope you don't mind me tranferring your comment Philip to this current page to get more coverage. :)

  2. I wonder whether they will invite written questions only so that tricky ones can be eliminated.

  3. However they answer questions, they'll just spout the usual weasel words.
