Club Governance - a letter from Richard

Dear Member

When members of the club last came together at the 2020 AGM, we were, as ever, awaiting with great expectation the start of another new season.

Unfortunately, since then, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have seen the club coming to terms with unprecedented challenges – and you, as our members, have my sincere thanks for your patience and support.

These circumstances, of course, focus the mind still further on preserving the future of our club and – as many of you will be aware having contributed to the consultation and constitutional process that came to a conclusion at the AGM – an important strand of that is our governance.

As you may recall, the creation of a Nominations Panel was included within proposals from the General Committee which members of the club voted for and ratified at the 2020 AGM.

All governance proposals were based on assessments of best practice, together with the requirements of Sport England and the ECB. The guiding principles were that they must be in the best interests of the club – and to ensure its membership is represented by individuals with the right skills, knowledge, diversity and experience.

Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club is, therefore, now seeking suitable individuals to contribute to the governance of the club by joining the newly formed Nominations Panel.

We are now looking for two Nottinghamshire members – and one non-member, to offer an independent view – to complete the formation of the Nominations Panel along with myself as Club Chairman and my fellow committee member
Kate Davies CBE.

Applications should comprise a CV and a covering letter including a personal statement as to the reasons why you wish to be considered. They can be submitted to the club via questions@nottsccc.co.uk or by post to the following address: Helen Wright, HR Manager, Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, Trent Bridge, Nottingham, NG2 6AG.

Richard Tennant

FYI

The composition of the Nominations Panel

The Nominations Panel will consist of five members comprising the Club Chair and an additional General Committee representative, together with two further members of the club (who are not serving General Committee members) and one non-member to offer an independent view.
The panel will be selected on the basis of relevant skills, experience and knowledge. Suggestions from the membership on appropriate candidates are welcomed.
The Nominations Panel will be selected and ratified by the General Committee on an annual basis.  Members of the Nominations Panel, other than the Chair of the Club, will serve for a period of no more than three years. The Chair will serve for as long as they hold office.
The Role of the Nominations Panel
All applicants for Elected Member or Nominated Member roles will be interviewed by the Nominations Panel. The interview is to ensure that all prospective committee members understand what is required of them and have the opportunity to ask any questions in regard to their potential role.
The Nominations Panel would consider the following requirements when making its recommendations, to ensure that the General Committee as a collective body meets the necessary criteria of a well-governed club:
  • To promote and protect the interests of the club and its members.
  • To ensure that the General Committee is sufficiently diverse, inclusive of gender, age and ethnicity.
  • To effectively engage with the recreational game and promote the development & community objectives of the club.
  • To ensure compliance with relevant regulations, charters and codes.
  • The requisite mix of skills and experience including cricketing, financial, commercial, human resources, property and legal.
  • To consider succession planning and ensure a formal and transparent election process.
It is not proposed to apply quotas to gender, ethnicity or age, but to task the Nominations Panel to take note of this requirement when making their nominations to the General Committee.

  1. Anything that takes away from the WHOLE Membership electing Committee members is a retrograde step - and perhaps we need more open srcrutiny of Elections as it is as I know of no-one who voted for Ms. Huggard!

  2. Shouldn't Richard and the committee have more pressing matters on their minds than the club's governance at this time such as ensuring that cricket is open to as many people as possible during this shortened season?

  3. Sadly, legally / Constitutionally they have to press ahead with this wretched Governance issue.

  4. Reminds me of the classic quiz show on channel 4, 15 to 1 and the old perennial "Question ? or Nominate?"
