  1. Poor lad won't recognise the badge this time.

"Once I get that badge back on my chest and the ball in my hand, there’ll be no backward steps taken for sure."

  2. Where does that leave the South African Dane Paterson?

  3. Unless rules changed 2 overseas can play at least in red ball & t20 it was brought in when the Kolpak deals were scrapped so a very healthy bowling attack of Broady Patto Patto Bally and Fletch Can’t see many Div2 batting line ups relishing that early season

  4. With that bowling line up we should bowl most Div 2 teams out before lunch on the first day !
Just like Rice / Hadlee and Co used to do in byegone times.

  5. Maybe some sporting wickets are going to be on offer at TB, Just hope our batting can give the team the runs they need!

Hopefully given Notts stock of seam bowlers there will be less chance of injuries caused by over bowling which should help Patto stay fit, The fact that he is here for the season should also help him feel more relaxed, Too many times overseas stars come in on a short term contract and feel pressure to perform, Being here for the season should mean that JP does not feel he has to play in every match in order to justify their wages.

  7. On an Aussie theme still….why is everyone so surprised with Englands latest drubbing in Australia? It’s hardly a surprise. I believe I’m right in saying the last time we won the ashes in their own back yard was the 1986/7 tour when Sir Michael of Gatting was captain. Think this was the same tour our very own Chris Broad hit 3 centuries in the series and was named International cricketer of the year. This was over 30 years ago.I think the Andrew Strauss or Alastair Cook side then drew the series 2-2 thus retaining the cherished urn. But in between Freddie Flintoffs side was blown away 5 nil which was predominantly the same side that had just won the Ashes in 2005 with Harmison, KP et all and we were also pitifully blown away in the ‘Mitchell Johnson’ series when most England batters were backing away from him at the crease as they didn’t fancy it. We just do not produce cricketers who are suited to their conditions or wickets on a regular basis. So whilst most readers of this site will be desperate for a change to see the county championship given more focus and priority I am not convinced this slaughtering is down to our county structures. Incidentally they’re batsmen no longer play our home conditions that well either, hence our own Stuart Broad taking 8-15 a few years back at the Home of Cricket.

    1. Once you blip on the England RADAR but not into the eleven, you cease to play cricket - look at Jake Ball, neither use nor ornament over the last few years.

    2. Jake has been unlucky with injuries over the last couple of seasons but yes I agree once those England bowling coaches get hold of you…………just ask Joffra Archer

  8. Jake learnt to play the bongos last year

  9. Just checked the final batting averages for the humiliated England Ashes team . Batting averages of 10, 11, 12 and 15 for Hameed , Pope , Burns and Butler . Others are in the low twenties . Only one century scored in the whole shooting match and very few fifties. How the mighty are fallen . Big reputations in tatters. Joe Root must be feeling shattered. He says he wants to carry on as England Captain . He deserves to if he still really wants the job deep down . Our own poor Hameed . Scoring only 80 runs after 8 innings in the most important matches he will probably ever play in . His confidence will be shot to pieces . Lets hope he can pick up the pieces and produce the goods for Notts in the coming 4 dayers . Just can't see him being picked to play for England again . Failed openers rarely come back into the Test side . Where on earth can England find another Boycott , Botham , Russell and Willis? Even " one run an over" Chris Tavare would be preferable to Rory Burns and Co . We need guys who can stay at the crease for long periods and wear the bowlers out so that the middle order big hitters can build a big score!?. The top class Test players of yesteryear like Gower , Gooch , Atherton Stewart,Cooke , Edrich etc etc ( too many to single out!)- where are the new heroes that can score runs at Test level under pressure?

  10. Re above posting
    Forgot to ask
"" WHATS WRONG WITH ENGLISH CRICKET?""
New Zealand has a small population - about seven million - that's about one tenth of ours . So how come they have a cricket side that can wallop us and others in all formats?
Have we got too many " chiefs" and not enough "Indians?"

  11. Just read Aggers interesting piece on BBC cricket website and you probably have to go along with what his proposals are in general. However he almost contradicts himself with the last bit saying Australia are now favourites for the Ashes when it’s played in 2023 as they seek to end a run of 22 years in capturing the urn away from home soil. So why is no one saying they’ve got a problem with their domestic format also ? Is not just a fact that sides are much more competitive in their own conditions ? I can see where Aggers is coming from but it’s easy to overlook other countries results away from home and just think our system needs drastic overhaul. As he states we’ve been awful in Australia for many years but they’ve not been too flash against the ball that seams in our English conditions. The very same sides could play this 5 test contest in our back yard and it will be a very competitive series. They would have massive trouble playing Broad Anderson Wood and Robinson when conditions are in our favour in my opinion

  12. Guess it will be down to the Notts coaching staff to put Hameed's batting back together again, England really should have dropped him before they actually did, The poor guy looks bereft of any confidence and it will take take him some time to put that disastrous tour behind him.

However he was not the only tourist to suffer, Burns and Pope also suffered at the hands of the Aussie pace attack and both look like they need a spell away from the limelight, As for the bowlers its pretty clear that Chris Woakes should not tour again, Quite simply he does not trouble quality batsmen away from English conditions, Ollie Robinson does not suffer with that problem his nagging line and length see's to that, What he does suffer from though is a clear lack of fitness, Maybe he needs to chat with Fletch a fine example of someone who had ability but lacked the fitness he needed to fulfil his talent, If Robinson can sort that out you can see him enjoying a long test career.

  13. When you carefully watch fast bowlers pounding up and down their various run ups you just wonder how the body stands up to it .Its amazing they don't break down more often . When you look at a slow motion side on view of the average fast bowlers action you just realise the stress on joints , muscles , hamstrings etc for each delivery . When that same bowler bowls 20+ Overs a day which calculates to more than 120 deliveries - no wonder they like a pint or two after play has finished . James Anderson and company are physical wonders to keep going for such a long time.

    1. Yes Cruet agreed, but don’t forget him and Sir Stuart of Broad have played very little domestic cricket over the last 10-15 years in order they can have such longevity in the Test Arena. Feel the rigours of bowling much worse for county pros like BIG Fletch who are not raking in their millionaire lifestyles so credit to them but they’re not suffering anything like as much as people like Gough Caddick Willis and Botham did not that long ago in having to play day in day out for their respective counties in addition to their England commitments without ever being on lucrative central contracts and secure financially after a few years of playing

  14. I always think it's amazing that Test players like Fred Trueman and Brian Statham would finish a 5 day Test on a Tuesday night then perhaps travel back up North by car or train and then possible turn up to play for their County sides on Wednesday morning . When Fred eventually retired after his long arduous career he was asked by an interviewer " so now then Fred , how do you feel after taking all those hundreds of wickets?"
" Bloody tired!" was Fred's reply .It was a hard life for most cricketers back then and they played for very little money in the main and many took mundane winter jobs to keep the wolf from the door.
Todays millionaire Test players don't know they are born !?
