Strauss' Panel To Recommend Cutting County Cricket?

Complete madness.

When England were Test ranked #1, cricketers played more days cricket than they do now, fact.

When did it all become about Test cricket in any case?

Jeff Moore needs to be told how to vote by county members, not the committee, not the club's employees, not by agents or media outlets, advertisers, county councils or who ever. He represents the members and therefore he presents our views and votes accordingly. It's not just about Notts CCC, it's about ALL 18 COUNTIES. SAVE OUR COUNTIES

ECB high-performance review panel likely to cut amount of county matches.

Andrew Strauss’s high-performance review panel will meet again on Monday to begin drawing up recommendations for the future of English cricket, which is likely to result in a significant reduction in the amount of domestic action each season. A proposal for counties to play two first-class matches overseas — probably in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) or Caribbean — could also be put forward. These games, to take place in March, may even form part of the County Championship (PTG 3908-19206, 18 June 2022).

The eight-person panel, chaired by Strauss in his capacity as head of the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) cricket committee, also includes Rob Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket, David Brailsford, the former performance director at Team Sky, and Dan Ashworth, the director of football at Newcastle United. It has met twice over the past month to agree on some key “high-performance” principles with the overall aim of making England the number one-ranked team in all formats within five years.

Once their recommendations are finalised — on issues such as the domestic schedule, coaching and central contracts — they will be put to a working group of county chiefs who will assess the potential impact on the 18 first-class counties and, crucially, judge whether they will win the support of county chairmen. The review panel is likely to recommend a reduction in the number of matches in both the T20 Blast and the County Championship — perhaps from 14 to 10 matches in the Blast and 14 to 12 in the Championship. There is agreement across the game that the present packed schedule does not allow players to perform at their best.

The recommendations are also likely to include proposals for counties to play two first-class matches overseas, although it is yet to be decided whether they would form part of the County Championship. One option could be to include those matches as early Championship fixtures, rather than cutting the total number of matches. The top division could also increase in size to 12 teams, with a smaller second “feeder” division below. Strauss has previously said that the review must look to be “radical” but any changes need to be approved by at least 12 of the 18 first-class counties. The intention is that proposals are voted on at the end of the season with a view to implementing them the 2023 UK summer.

  1. Situation reaching crisis point.
    Again we are excluded.
Forums like this, Supporters Associations and some journalists, (even Ian Chappell recently !) doing a great job.
But the secrecy of this committee, including 2 people who were reprimanded by other sports, making it very difficult.
    As for Strauss !

  2. My mate has always said, forget the 2 div north/south t20 format, why don’t you play the red ball and then the same team in the blast game also ? Yes, the players are still switching formats(not ideal) but it massively cuts down on the travelling as the county is already based here for the county fixture. So, for example this week, we played Middlesex Sun-Weds, so could you play the t20 against them also on the friday or saturday whilst the are still here ?
Guess it could reduce the travelling fans and therefore the revenue to the Counties depending on who is in the two red ball divisions but this season we would still be playing Leicestershire and Derbyshire with this format.
Can’t see it being implemented as the players wouldn’t like it. But, we did it previously when the county game would stop and then play the 40 over game on the sunday in between and this system still managed to produce world-class Test players for England.
If out domestic structure is quite so bad, then how have we just managed to beat New Zealand 3-0 ? The system has produced Root, Stokes, Bairstow and now Pope in recent years so are they going to do something completely unprecedented and radical just because there’s currently a lack of Test quality opening batsmen on the county circuit? Some of this is just cyclical also as an Alistair Cook type of player only comes through every generation of players.
I certainly do not want the county championship format reduced further like many others on here i would suggest

  3. About a decade ago they canvassed our opinions. Because it was not what they wanted to hear ( namely more championship cricket) they have done it since.foxy

  4. Agree with most of what Mickey Arthur is saying. How can you have Lancashire probably without 5 England players for their T20 qtr final tonight?
And as he goes onto say, we’ve got August and most teams will only play 8 days cricket because of the you know what.

  5. Now the ECB have confirmed the Hundred to at least 2028 and the early staging of the Blast costing Notts at least £500k in lost revenue this season the nails continue to be hammered into the coffin of county cricket. Reducing the championship further will be the next nail. Cricket will be unrecognisable in 10 years time.

  6. What can be done to stop the destruction of our beloved game as highlighted in the following article: https://inews.co.uk/sport/cricket/ben-stokes-retirement-50-over-cricket-1753526. Do we need to organise a march starting in Durham (Jarrow of course) and calling in at every first class county before we stage a sit in on the 'hallowed' turf at Lord's??
