Second XI v Yorkshire in 50 over Trophy at Notts Sports Ground

Nottinghamshire's second string squad faced a Yorkshire second eleven most of whom had some first team experience, in the first of their Trophy matches.

The weather was sunny but a cool breeze blew across the field from the Trent.

Yorkshire (resplendent in purple) won the toss and inserted the hosts. After a brisk start, Matty Cross was first out caught in the slips off Ashraf. Opener Kelsall was joined by Hasan Azad, who started more fluidly than his more experienced partner, with the two new balls still hard.

Kelsall soon found his rhythm and the two Notts batsmen put on an entertaining 100+ at roughly a run a ball. Both Kelsall (58) and Azad (57) were out to Rafiq.

Sam Wood entered the fray at the fall of Kelsall and he struck the ball well from the start of his innings,  timing the ball well and looking in good form. On 45 he was given out LBW to Ashraf. From that point the Nottinghamshire innings lost momentum, lost wickets and lost it's way. Brett Hutton batted with some aggression before being bowled by "a full of himself" Jack Leaning for 7. Dal made a scratchy 24 before running himself out and didn't impress this observer.

The Notts innings closed on 247/8 perhaps as much as 40 below par, or to where they looked to be heading when Kelsall and Azad were at the crease). Rich Pyrah  bowled for the visitors  and was wicket-less for once against Notts.

Yorkshire opened up their batting with Eliott Callis (Worksop College) and Jonathan Tattersall (England U19) and the pair batted without much trouble other than one being struck in the chest by Kitt. The opening stand lasted until 146 after which Hodgson, Leaning, Rhodes, Rafiq, Pyrah and Shaw (all with first XI experience) chipped-in to for a four wicket win with an over to spare. DDG
