Supporter's Letter to Chair Hunt Re: Head Coach

As mentioned in comments on another post, here is the letter that Mark is yet to receive a reply to. Thanks to Mark for sharing what appear to be very commonly held feelings amongst supporters...

25 July 2024

Dear Mr Hunt

NO CONFIDENCE IN PETER MOORES

Having been a member of this great cricket club for a number of years. I decided at the end of 2022 not to renew my membership.

The rationale behind this decision, was increasing disillusionment with team selections, resulting in continued poor results. The final straw for me, was when arguably, the most talented cricketer the club had produced in a very long time, namely Evison, departed for pastures new, because Moores could not guarantee him regular first team cricket.

Now as an onlooking supporter of the club, but no longer a member, I have witnessed the continuation of the same predictable team selections, resulting in a further deterioration in performance on the field of play. I hold the view, as I am sure a vast number of your membership do, that if Moores had possessed the necessary insight, and invested in youth in the recent T20 competition, then Notts could well have reached the quarter final stages, instead of languishing at the foot of the table. Why did he repeatedly keep selecting the same players throughout the tournament, when it was obvious to everyone, that they could not succeed with that side? The penny finally dropped in the final match against Yorkshire, when it was too late.

In the County Championship, Notts are invariably battling for either a draw, or trying to prevent defeat. In limited overs cricket, even counties such as Derbyshire and Leicestershire who have limited financial resources, have inflicted recent defeats on the Notts team. This should not be happening.

It is little wonder that attendances and memberships are in decline.

In addition to all of this, there is the pertinent issue of Peter Moores conflict of interest.

The blatant nepotism bestowed towards his son Tom, is not only disgraceful, considering his position as Head Coach, but also totally undeserving, considering the lad’s limited ability both as a wicket keeper and as a batsman.

I know for a fact, that this particular issue, is a massive bugbear amongst supporters, and is widely documented on Nottinghamshire social media websites.

This situation is even more unjust when you consider that Notts have a wicket keeper in their second X1, namely Schadendorf, who is not only a superior wicket keeper and batsman,, but has never been selected to play either a four day championship game or a T20 fixture.

It appears, that he is being deliberately excluded, for the fear of him outperforming his underachieving son Tom.

A further fact is that Tom Moores has a top score over a 12 month period of 31.

How on earth can father Peter justify his selection with that record? Answer, he can’t.

Peter Moores was once upon a time a revered cricket coach at the highest level of the game. However, his stock has dwindled alarmingly in recent years.

His stubborn, misguided team selections, inhibiting the progression of talented younger players allied to his blatant nepotism, and a history of poor results on the field of play have made his position untenable.

I cannot imagine any other county tolerating such a set of circumstances, for the length of time that Notts have done.

Changing the Head Coach is long overdue. The committee need to seize the mantle, and perform the severance with Peter Moores for the benefit and wellbeing of the club.

I consider this act will also have a positive reaction to new member applications, as there are a vast number of disenchanted supporters out there, like me ,who have been crying out for this to happen for a considerable length of time.

It will be very depressing, if Peter Moores is still the Head Coach come April 2025.

Please ensure that this is not the case.

Your sincerely

Mark Stevenson

An excellent , well thought out letter Mark .
Who can argue with the points you raise?
Not to have had a reply is a disgrace.
Perhaps the wider publication of your letter might provoke some response .
Why not forward a copy of the letter to the Nottm Evening Post for publication ?
Cant see why it could not be printed .The contents and arguments put forward will make sense to the greater majority of the dwindling Notts Membership .
Nottinghamshire CCC is in decline and no one seems able to do anything about it . Perhaps only a Members revolt could bring about overdue change?

  3. Sadly unless the weather saves us in the championship Moores will have his 3rd relegation at Notts on his CV but it seems with Lisa and Mick in charge and the paper. Weight committee having no say father and son are safe for another season double act 🏏

    1. I think most, if not all, folk who post on this blog Chris SUPPORT primarily The Club and care passionately about its wellbeing on and off the field. Secondary to that, they support the players. Sadly most posters aren't 12 years old anymore, so don't blindly believe the output from the the Club's website - the propaganda put out by Pravda, as trentbridge.co.uk has become dubbed on this domain.
I hope everyone still supports the staff, when they do the right thing, but as adults we reserve the right to point out when things aren't being done correctly or in the best interests of the Club (which we care about).
Everyone is allowed an opinion. Results speak volumes and Notts' results are pretty dire in 2024. Peter Moores has been in place for since 2016, the squad is of his making and he can't blame anyone else or circumstances. Evidently other coaches at some other counties, in less time have assembled squads that out-perform the Moores' Notts squad, having spent less money in the process assembling those squads. If every "batter" is out of form at the same time, which had been the case through-out the T20 campaign in 2023 and to a greater extent 2024, doesn't that indicate that something is wrong with the way the players are being managed collectively (by Peter Moores and his army of coaches) .

I hope everyone on this thread can be supportive of Chris whilst he transitions through this difficult period into the world of reality.

If you have access to Peter Moores Chris, please urge him to do the right thing and step down from his position. Does he really want 3 relegations on his CV?

You can assume no one posting on here wants to see it!

  6. Well that's your opinion Mr Moores. Oh. It's not a few members. The present squad is awful so giving the young lads a run-like at Yorkshire T20-may have shown initiative.

  7. Certainly had to much sun & sherbets
Chris you are the perfect candidate
For the Notts committee a total 🤡🤡🤡

  8. Do we think, in this state, those in governance at Notts CCC are the right people to make decisions about selling multi-million pound stakes in the club's assets?

  9. Sadly, Mark's letter is spot on. I considered rejoining Notts this year, I only left because I was nursing my wife, but am so pleased that I did not. Many of the performances this season in all competitions have been woeful. I love Trent Bridge and would love to become a member again but unless there are management changes, I will stay at home. 10. I was going to bring a young family member, who is really enjoying playing cricket, to Family Fun Day.

After witnessing the debacle of the Gloucestershire innings on Friday, we decided that watching a day of cricket at Trent Bridge on Sunday, might make her hate this fine sport.

To protect her cricketing interest, we went to the seaside instead.

It would be great to bring her to a game next season where Notts are both entertaining and competitive, and under new coaching and management staff.

  12. Peter Moores is basically the Cricket coach equivalent to what Steve Bruce is in football. Had success in the past, now utterly past it and the game has moved on.

  13. Conflicts of interest: Moores with Moores and Newell with Pursehouse. How can Newell command any respect from Moores senior about his conflict of interest with regards to his son, when the DoC is shacked-up with CEO and together on the senior management table in unison where basically they must get their own way everytime on every issue. It appears that this issue have never been raised because all three of them are too comfortable with the status quo. Moores gets to employ his son and Newell gets away with doing as little as possible, kerching!! And the media wonder why a massive club like Notts under achieves to the extent that it does.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well when you speak to the DOC he states
He as no say or input in to selection or anything to do with the first team
If that's the case who would override moors & ask the difficult questions, this is no way to run a professional outfit but when you challenge the DCO all he says is Peter's going nowhere so where's the accountability, the answer simple there isn't any, it's all been to cosy for to long

  15. Newell has been at Notts for 35 years unbroken. Pursehouse for 24 years, in a role that is traditionally head hunted after 10, Moores P 9 years, and Moores T 10 years. In a results business which means there should be frequent changes.

    1. should read 40 years for Newell !

    2. I don't think that you can blame the young Michael Newell for the governance of the club 40 years ago, but is does show what little wider experience of the way other clubs operate he actually has, being a one club man through the whole of his career - zero. If Notts had been year on year winning silverware and producing players through the age groups that go on to represent the county and England for last 20 odd years, you might be able to make an argument that change isn't required. But, that hasn't been the case. [Mick Newell CV check: Beyond coaching the England u19 tour to Bangladesh in 2009 and being part of a coaching team for England Lions in 2011, Mick Newell has had no professional experience outside the confines of the small footprint of Trent Bridge.] Is that loyalty or the sign of someone that has reached the ceiling of their own potential, 20+ years ago? For Mick that's great, being comfortable with oneself and status, but is it so great for NCCC?
