Day 3 v Sussex at Trent Bridge LV=

NOTTS SLUMP AND FOLLOW-ON AGAIN

In a replica of the third day at Edgbaston, the opposition went through Notts batting line-up like a hot knife through butter as they closed the day still 74 arrears with only six wickets standing, as they managed to lose 13 wickets for 282 runs.
Turner added 12 to his overnight score before playing on to Anyon for 64, an innings which should secure him a contract for next season. Wessels looked all at sea and left-armer Arif put him out his misery by ripping out his off stump. Two balls later Mullaney shouldered arms to the same bowler to depart for a duck, 206 for 4. Bravo who batted well survived to lunch with Read as a partner and at 216 for 4, Notts still had a chance of avoiding the follow-on.
Yardy decided to introduce Gatting’s occasional seamers from the Radcliffe Road, and Bravo who appeared to have lost his concentration during lunch, fell leg before for 53 to the fifth ball of the afternoon session. Franks kept Read company for 15 overs but with the score on 259, edged Arif behind to depart for 12. White did not last long having his middle stump removed by Khan for 11. Read then was stumped by Brown off Panesar for a fighting 55 off 93 balls. Shreck came in to everyone’s surprise at ten and played a lofted drive then was only yards from clearing the ropes over deep mid-wicket, where did that shot come from!

Fletcher edged Khan to second slip, and Adams, appearing to have a hand injury, was bowled by Panesar for three as Notts closed on 311, 177 behind. Tea was taken, and with the appearance of Sussex fielders we knew the follow-on had been enforced with 38 overs left. Hales edged Khan to first slip to finish the season with just a single to his name. Turner and Bravo added 55 until in the 20th over Bravo edged Panesar to caught behind for 17. Two balls later Wessels fell to the arm ball from Panesar having his off stump removed without troubling the scorers. With bad light closing Sussex introduced Nash from the Radcliffe Road end, Turner fell leg before to the off spinner for 42. Mullaney joined Read and they added an unbroken 26 when with 10 overs still to bowl the umpires decided the light was too poor to continue with Notts on 103 for four.

The wicket was slow and relatively flat, although Panesar has got turn that seemed beyond White a day earlier. Based on their lackadaisical attitude over the last week, Notts should surrender very meekly tomorrow. It’s a minor miracle that somehow Notts have stayed up this season with such a brittle batting line up. Wessels and Mullaney have not got the ability at present to hold down the number four and five batting slots, with Patel badly missed.
