Bat dominates ball

This game seems destined to become a bore draw, as in the 68 overs bowled during a showery day not a single wicket fell. Indeed it is now 88 overs since Lumb was bowled at 1629 yesterday, the last wicket to fall. The bat completely dominant over ball.
The big talking point of the day was James Taylor surprise call up to the England squad for the Headingley Test; whether he plays is still up in the air as England may opt for five bowlers. He celebrated his call up by adding 57 runs off 63 balls as Notts declared their innings on a massive 520 for four declared. Taylor (163*) and Voges (44*) unbroken 5th partnership had added 148 runs in 49 overs.

Sussex though made untroubled progress despite two lengthy stoppages for rain. they closed on 146 without loss after 51 overs with Nash 79 not out and Joyce 63 not out; they still trail by 203 runs. There were no dropped catches, no real leg before shouts. Adams and Carter did beat the bat a few times but the wicket is now so benign and lacking in the pace; that unless Sussex bat very poorly or the ball swings round corners tomorrow; this game will end in complete stalemate, Warwickshire meanwhile have made Surrey follow-on on Edgbaston and seem well placed for victory. Notts certainly have not bowled badly, it was just a case of a featherbed pitch and very professional batting from the experienced Sussex opening pair that led to no chances being offered. Credit to umpires Evans and Gough for showing keenness to restart play after two heavy showers; a complete contrast to the attitude shown by Bailey and Bainton against Surrey last week.

248

Congratulations to Adam Lyth who scored 248 not out at Grace Road becoming the highest scoring Yorkshireman, carrying his bat ever.
