Voges and Read Rescue Notts between the showers.

Rain was the final winner once again on entertaining opening day against Surrey at TB.
Notts were unchanged from Uxbridge; visiting captain Zander de Bruyn inserted Notts on winning the toss

Hales and Wessels after their previous night’s heroics made a rapid start but in the sixth over with the score on 35, Wessels (23) edged Linley to Jordan at first slip, he had earlier hit Jon Lewis for three fours in the former Gloucesterman’s opening over. The ball was moving about and seven overs later, Hales (14) played on to Lewis, 49 for two. Lumb one of six Notts players in the provisional England World 20/20 squad fell plumb leg before to Chris Jordan for 12. Patel hit his first ball for four but was strangled down the legside by Meaker caught by wicket-keeper Davies for nine, 59 for four.

Voges joined Taylor and was badly dropped on five by Spriegel at third slip off Meaker; Surrey were made to pay for this missed chance. Taylor who in complete contrast to his pyjama form has struggled in the championship survived a confident leg before shout on 12 from Jordan but was without the next over edging the rapid Meaker behind the wicket for a disappointing 16, 84 for five.

Notts reached lunch without further alarm on 118 for five. Much against the Met Office’s prediction the opening session had been uninterrupted by the elements.

Heavy showers blighted the rest of day as four separate starts were made as Notts closed on 178 for five after 42 overs with Read on 49 and Voges on 38; with no reliable batting left the home side will be looking to further add to the sixth wicket partnership which has so far yielded 95 runs. Further rain is promised for tomorrow.
