An umpiring oversight effectively cost a result in this game
at Trent Bridge today; but from the lack of
intensity in the play that there was, a no result is probably a fair result and
is certainly apt, as neither team could progress and were playing just for pride.
For a bank holiday, Trent Bridge
was disappointingly populated and the atmosphere on and off the field was
decidedly end of term. Mark Wallace
won the toss and inserted an Outlaws side that included Neil Edwards for his season’s
competition debut.
Neil Edwards made the most of his opportunity to show his
doubters that he belongs at Trent
Bridge with 58 off 53
balls being the dominant partner in an opening stand of 114 in 18 overs. Once
Edwards was out, Alex Hales took over, hitting square and straight in equal
measure and was unlucky to be out for 94 from 87 balls. Hales’ wicket was
immediately followed by Adam Voges’ farewell to Trent Bridge Golden Duck, a
disappointing end to a disappointing season for the Australian.
Captain for the day, James Taylor, scratched around,
reversing hitting the spinner, Salter, on a number of occasions for 40 runs
from 50 balls. Scott Elstone (16) continued in a similar vein leaving Riki
Wessels (27) to finish off the innings à la Chris Read. The innings closed on 264/6
Mullaney 6 not out and White 7 not out.
With the rain spotting the umpires called the covers on over
tea but at the appointed resumption time they’d forgotten to have the wicket,
brushed, marked and rolled losing 10 minutes, 10 minutes that cost the game the
27 balls that would have made a result.
When Glamorgan, aka the Welsh Dragons, did bat they received
5.3 overs (of a revised 38) before the rain returned more persistently this time. At the point of
abandonment the visitors were short of the DL par score but 4.3 overs short of
making it a valid result. HBD
The Milton Report:
Fifteen runs later, Taylor misjudged a slower ball from Wagg to sky the ball to wide mid on to depart for a 50-ball 40 an innings that included only three boundaries.
The Milton Report:
Notts and Glamorgan had to settle for one point each from their dead rubber game at Trent Bridge today when rain finally arrived in earnest at 1722.
With Read and Lumb rested, stand-in skipper Taylor lost the toss and Notts were inserted.
The floodlights were on throughout as the sky was permanently slate grey. The crowd was extremely poor with no more than 1,000 spectators in attendance.
The match was very low key with the visitors bowling and fielding at best mediocre. James Harris who has been offered a contract by Notts for the 2013 season did not impress with 8-0-60.0. But his record suggests he would be excellent signing for the Green and Gold should he decide to take up the offer.
Opening up, Hales and Edwards added 114 runs in 18 overs. The standard of bowling can be adequately gauged by Edwards scoring 58 in 55 balls including seven fours and one six. However the ball after hitting his maximum the Cornishman was caught off John Glover at wide long off going for successive big shot. Hales who was at first second fiddle to Edwards accelerated after his departure and looked certain for a ton until he was bowled off stump six runs short of his ton by young off spinner Andrew Salter from Haverfordwest; 194 for two in the 31st over. Hales had hit the previous two balls for 6 and 4; the first two balls of the batting power play. Hales 94 came off 87 balls with seven fours and three sixes. Next ball the out of form Voges followed in an identikit fashion for a golden duck.
Stand-in keeper Wessels and Scott Elstone provided some late impetus as Notts lost their way somewhat during the power play as they added 38 runs in five orders. Elstone skied Simon Jones to cover having made 16.
Wessels fell for 27 caught behind off Wagg. Notts eventually closed their innings on 264 for six. Wagg 8-0-45-2 and 19 year old Salter 8-=0-41-2 were the pick of the visitors attack.

A shower during the interval delayed the Glamorgan reply by 10 minutes as Vera now dictated that they needed 257 runs in 38 overs. There was time for Darren Pattinson to have a final bowl at Trent Bridge before persistent drizzle arrived with Glamorgan 20 for 0 off 5.3 overs. Notts finished fourth in Group B with six wins and five losses along with today’s no result
