Durham LV= Day 1 at Trent Bridge 2012

Notts won the toss and put Durham in on a green, muddy-coloured looking wicket. The humid atmosphere would have been good for swing bowling, had it not been windy but nevertheless Notts made inroads into the Durham batting before the forecast rain arrived.

Ian Blackwell has been loaned -out to LV title favourites Warwickshire for the remaining games this season from Durham. Incidentally, Blackwell was sighted at Trent Bridge on the first morning, on a spying mission for his new employers no doubt

The Report:

Notts won the toss and inserted Durham on a green pitch at Trent Bridge today. With Adams, Pattinson and Gurney injured and with Patel on international duty; Notts were short of bowling options so in came Mullaney and for the first time since April White and Fletcher were given championship appearances. The Durham squad has two sons of former South African keepers, Keaton Kent Jennings (son of Ray) and Michael Richardson (12th man the son of David); the latter having studied at Nottingham University.

The sky was slate grey and the floodlights came on early in the session. Will Smith lasted until the eighth over when he was bowled shouldering arms to Fletcher for 3. Mark Stoneman was monopolising the scoring but after having faced 13 balls left hander Jennings fell leg before to the accurate Phillips for two. Mustard was the next wicket to fall when he edged Carter into Read’s gloves for nine. The sky was getting darker as the forecast rain was not far away, three overs before lunch Fletcher got south paw Stoneman caught behind for 46 an innings which contained nine fours. Durham got to lunch on 85 for four off 30 overs with Benkenstein 16 not out and Collingwood nine not out.
Usual scene in 2012
Light rain arrived during the lunch interval and the players never returned. There was brief hope of play with an inspection planned at 1550 with the covers now off; however heavy rain returned and the covers were laid out once more as play was called off 1645. Notts had bowled well with Franks particularly unlucky not to get a wicket, there was also a rare one over cameo from Mullaney. Better weather is forecast for tomorrow.
