v Durham Second XI Trophy at NSG

Franks' 2nds beat Durham

Notts seconds beat Durham by 35 runs at Lady Bay this afternoon in a low scoring 40-over contest.

Durham won toss and elected to bowl on a day of clear blue skies. Notts got off to a bad start, both Azad and Rowe departing for ducks; Kelsall and Graeme White (batting at four) added 47 until White (29) was caught behind off spinner Ryan Buckley (8-0-25-3). Kelsall (29) followed in Buckley’s next over caught at mid wicket for 29. Sam Wood (4) and skipper Franks (9) both failed; Notts in deep trouble at 76 for 6 in 22nd over. Tillcock (30) and Hutton (16) added an invaluable 46 for the 7th wicket on the turning pitch. Keeper Scott McKechnie a MCC Young Cricketer finished unbeaten on 19 as Notts were all out for 157 with three overs unused Ruel Brathwaite picked up three for 36 an Mitch Claydon had figures of 6-2-15-1.
Durham also lost early wickets as Singh and Jennings fell to spinners Wood and White respectively. Durham were 100 for 3 in the 29th over seemingly cruising but a dramatic collapse saw the last seven wicket tumble for 22 runs in eight overs as White picked up 8-0-21-4. Keeper Michael Richardson (39) played on to George Bacon which sparked the collapse as White removed Buckley and Claydon with successive balls. Jamie Harrison (17) holed out to long on off slow left armer Adam Tillcock to spark wild celebrations by the Notts players in front of bank holiday crowd of around 75 spectators. Franks is an excellent captain for the youngsters to have; very enthusiastic and professional.

Postcard from Mandalong NSW

Thanks for your report on the win - good to see James T, Samit and Alex Hales back to form. You mentioned Trent Copeland - he looked impressive the brief times I saw him here and as he hails from my adopted Australian home town of Gosford I am interested in following his progress. Perhaps Peter B could add a comment or two on him. I thought the most impressive bowler in Australia was Jackson Bird , not the fastest but McGrathesque in line and length and could do very well if fit to play in England

I had a great weekend at Mandalong at a private country cricket ground owned by Stirling Hammond who is Chairman of NSW Over 60s cricket - a wonderful experience at a quirky and beautiful location typically Oz. Brown snakes and kangaroos in the creeks and bush adjoining this idyllic location also butcher birds [like magpies only a bit smaller], kookaburras and water fowl spotted . There were no car sounds either. As regards the cricket I did not trouble the scorers too much getting 6 not out and 4 in my two innings as a tail ender. I see Rhys Hayes got 62 for Gedling Colliery CC on Saturday which I was delighted to see

Have a good week...

cheers

Andy
