v Warwickshire Bears YB40 at Trent Bridge

Career best Patel leads Notts to 6 of the best

A well paced innings by Samit Patel guided Notts to a six wicket defeat over Warwickshire at Trent Bridge today.  They now have six wins out of six in the YB40 competition.

Jim Troughton won the toss and inserted Notts on the same wicket as used for the championship game against Derby. The wicket played well throughout.
Porterfield played and missed a few times before being comprehensively bowled in the third over by Gurney bowling from the Pavilion End, seven for one. Shahzad proved expensive and was taken off to be replaced by Samit Patel. Meanwhile Mullaney was being his normal frugal self. In the 16th over Troughton was caught and bowled by Mullaney for 36, 72 for two. Chopra departed four over later being caught at cover by Patel in White’s first over from the Radcliffe Road, 88 for three. Clarke went for the big hit but holed out to Mullaney at deep mid wicket off Patel for nine, 107 for four.
Veteran Maddy added impetus to the innings with Tiny Tim Ambrose as his partner, the Warwickshire stumper surviving two dropped catches by Lumb when 13 and Shahzad when he had 30. Graeme White was surprisingly taken out of the attack after bowling four overs for 19.

After 31 overs, Warwickshire took the power play and off the first three overs of it from Gurney and Ball they scored 43 runs, including one over from Ball costing 23 runs including five wides. Gurney conceded a four off the first ball of the last over of the power play, bowled a dot ball and then removed Maddy with a full toss driven straight to cover. The former Leicester man had hit 56 off just 33 balls with nine fours and one six. Gurney then bowled another three dot balls in succession, as Piolet who had poor game got bogged down. Notts restricted The Bears to 37 runs from the last five overs, which included the last over bowled by White which went for 17. Ambrose scored 55 off 65 with a single boundary. Young Javid hit 21 off 10 balls as he took a liking to White. Warwickshire 238 for seven off 40 overs. Gurney bowled 7-0-41-3, but the two bowlers who squeezed their mid innings effort were Mullaney (8-1-37-1) and Patel (8-0-34-1).
Notts needed six an over as the sun came out to please the 3168 spectators. Hales' personal nightmare continued when he was bowled by Hannon-Dalby for a nine ball six. Lumb looking in ominous form once again hit two fours and two sixes but was bowled by Clarke for 21, 34 for two. Notts wobbling somewhat.
Taylor joined Patel and they batted sensibly and did not panic. Patel was very much the aggressor, Titch once again happy to just scamper the singles and keep the scoreboard ticking. Mid innings Maddy and Rankin did restrict the scoring but Notts had wickets and the four over batting power play up their sleeve. Taylor played a paddle sweep to Maddy and only succeeded in skying the ball to short third man to be out for a 61-ball 46 an innings which included three boundaries. Notts needed 80 off the last 11 overs. The third wicket partnership had added 125 off 23 overs.
Cowan who replaced the injured Wessels ran to the crease in Franks fashion and he nervously scored 10 off 11 balls before being unluckily run out backing up. Notts now needed 54 off 51 balls.
Patel got his 100 in 110 balls and Notts took the batting power play with 34 runs required off four overs. Piolet and Hannon-Dalby could not contain Read and Patel who sped Notts over the line with five balls to spare; Patel hitting OHD over his head for six for the winning hit. His innings of 129 not out was a List A best beating his magnificent single handed effort of 114 in the quarter final at Durham five years previously. His innings came off 123 balls with 12 fours and four sixes and could be described as a mature innings. Read having a fallow season with the bat finished unbeaten on 23. OHD and Piolet had leaked 101 runs in 12.1 overs to help Notts over the line. Next up, the cock a hoop Orangemen who got their first win of the season in a reduced innings game at New Road.
