Off his trolley?

Former Chairman of the ECB and Tesco Supermarket former head, Lord MacLaurin has suggested reducing the number of counties from 18 to 12.

The drastic cull is needed after the disaster down-under and because the present system isn't producing enough cricketers of the sufficient quality, MacLaurin says.

Having read the article on bbcsport

  • Is he right?
  • Would Turkeys vote for Christmas and give up independent status in some cases just because at this point in history they are pretty rubbish or play a rubbish brand of cricket?
  • Does MacLaurin counter argue his own argument when he blames poor management for the fiasco this winter rather than the likes of Leicestershire or Kent for being poor for the last few years and supposedly dragging the standard of English cricket down with them?
  • Is the Lord off his trolley?

Former England captain Allan Lamb agreed with MacLaurin's comments, adding that England's management did not prepare for the series adequately.

Another South African with an opinion about English cricket - Allan Lamb is more famous latterly for TV ads for British Lamb than for cricket but should we carve up the county system and serve it up with mint sauce?

"You have to go properly prepared and everyone has to play," he said.
"Your top players have to go into a Test match on fire. We went into that Test match under-prepared and you can only blame the management."

Well I agree with that last bit.
