THRILLS AND SPILLS AS OUTLAWS SCRAMBLE LAST DASH WIN
Notts gained their first ever one wicket victory in T20 cricket beating local rivals Leicestershire Foxes in a breathless finish with a ball to spare in front of 6,000 spectators at Trent Bridge.
Leicestershire won the toss and elected to bat on a cool, mainly cloudy afternoon with a north westerly wind blowing. The match was played on a used pitch with short boundaries. Henriques and Pennington came in for McCann and Stone. The selection of the Australian a big surprise has he clearly still has mobility problems with his bad back.
Notts did not use Sams in the powerplay. Pennington conceded two off his opening over. Patel hit Montgomery to the point ropes; 6 off the 2nd over. Budinger hit Farhan for four through the covers, six off the 3rd over plus 4 byes. Budinger clubbed Montgomery for four through long off. Patel then hit the off spinner for four through point; 13 off the 4th over. Budinger slogged Pennington for four towards cow corner. Patel repeated the shot, 14 off the 5th over. Patel hit Farhan for a straight six then followed it up with consecutive boundaries (square leg, and wide third man on the reverse); 16 off the over. Leicestershire 61 for 0 off 6 overs.
Patterson-White went for five singles in the 7th over. Budinger hit Sams’ first ball to the extra cover ropes and then for a four through third man off the last delivery; 10 off the 8th over. Patterson-White went for six singles in the 9th over. Patel launched Farhan (3-0-33-0) for six over square leg, 11 off the over. Leicestershire 93 for 0 off 10 overs.
Budinger smashed Harrison for six over long on, 11 off the 11th over. Budinger got to 50 off 38 balls with a single off Montgomery. Next ball a single for Patel saw him reach 50 off 32 balls. Budinger hit Montgomery (3-0-26-0) for four through long on, seven plus a bye off the 12th over. Notts removed both openers in successive overs to stem the run flow. Patel (51 off 34 balls, 5x4, 2x6) was stumped by Moores off Harrison, 114 for 1 off 12.3 overs. Four off the 13th over. Budinger (56 off 45 balls, 6x4, 1x6) going for a wild leg side slog was bowled off stump by a ball from Sams that kept low, 116 for 2. Two off the 14th over. Masood switch hit Harrison for six over backward point. Rehan hit Harrison for four through backward point; 12 off the 15th over. Rehan hit Sams for 6 over cover; 10 off the 16th over.
Masood hit Patterson-White (3-0-25-0) for a straight six and then for four through the covers; 14 off the 17th over. Rehan was dropped on 16 by his brother Farhan, a difficult low chance at long leg, off Pennington. Masood ramped Pennington (3-0-27-0) for a fine leg boundary; 11 off the 18th over. Rehan hit Harrison (4-0-37-1) for six over square leg, 11 off the 19th over. Masood hit Sams (4-0-34-1) for four through mid-wicket. Masood edged the last ball for four. Leicestershire 188 for 2 off 20 overs. The third wicket stand between Rehan (30* off 22 balls; 1x4, 2x6) and Masood (40* off 19 balls, 4x4, 2x6) had added 72 in 6.3 overs. The score was around par with short boundaries in evidence throughout.
Clarke took a single off the third ball. James was bowled for a golden duck by van Beek; 1 for 0 off 4 balls. Four off the first over. Clarke hit Hull for six over mid-wicket. He picked up a two, then hit three offside boundaries in four balls; 20 off the over. Van Beek went for three singles off the third over. Clarke smashed Wood for two sixes over mid-wicket; 15 off the 4th over. Hull conceded six in the 5th over. Clarke hit Trevaskis for four through mid-wicket. Clarke (50 off 24 balls, 5x4, 3x6) reached his 50 off 23 balls with a swept four off Trevaskis but he was bowled next ball making room for a cut; 58 for 2. Henriques hit his first delivery for four through point. Notts 62 for 2 off 6 overs.
Notts lost their way in the next four overs scoring only 15 runs. Scriven conceded four singles in the 7th over. Henriques (6) was caught on the extra cover ropes by Trevaskis off Kimber, 71 for 3 after 8 overs. Trevaskis went for 6 in the 9th over. Kimber bowled a maiden to Moores, who was swiping fresh air, to further turn the screw.
Haynes hit Trevaskis for four through extra cover and three balls later a six over mid-wicket, 13 off the 11th over. Moores hit Patel for six over mid-wicket. Three byes took Notts to 100. Haynes (30 off 25 balls; 1x4, 1x6) holed out to van Beek on the mid-wicket ropes off Patel (1-0-7-1); 100 for 4 after 12 overs. Scriven (2-0-8-0) went for four in the 13th over. Notts now needed 85 off 7 overs @12.14.
Moores hit Wood (2-0-29-0) for a six over mid-wicket and Sams hit him for four through long leg; 14 off the 14th over. Sams launched Trevaskis (4-0-49-1) for six over long on. Moores then hit the slow left armer for consecutive boundaries (straight, square leg). Notts 134 for 4 off 15 overs.
Notts gleaned a crucial 21 off the 16th over with Sams playing a crucial hand in what was undoubtedly his best performance in Outlaws colours. He hit Kimber (3-1-26-2) for four and two sixes through mid-wicket off the first three deliveries of the over. The fourth ball went to the square leg ropes. Sams (33 off 12 balls, 3x4, 3x6) was bowled off the fifth delivery going for another big legside hit, 154 for 5. The fifth wicket had added 54 in 4 overs to put Notts in the driving seat with 35 required from the last 4.1 overs.
Montgomery hit Hull for three boundaries (extra cover, square leg and backward point) off the first four balls of the 17th over. Montgomery (13) fell switch hitting Hull to Budinger at short third man who took the catch diving high to his right; 167 for 6 off 17 overs. Moores hit van Beek for consecutive sixes (mid-wicket, cover). Notts needing just 10 off 16 balls but mass panic set in. Moores (42 off 30 balls, 2x4, 4x6, 16x0) a feast or famine of an innings ended when he holed out to Wood on the extra cover ropes off van Beek, 179 for 7. Patterson-White ran a single off the last ball of the over.
Three runs were accrued off the first three balls of the 19th over bowled by Hull (4-0-41-2). A poor shot by Harrison (2) saw him chip the ball to Patel at long leg (183 for 8). Pennington ran a leg bye. The last ball to Patterson-White was a dot ball. Five needed off the last over.
Van Beek (3.5-0-25-3) bowled the final over. Pennington got a single to mid-off. Patterson-White ran an easy single to long off. Pennington got a single to point. Two were needed off three balls when Patterson-White (3) was caught on the extra cover ropes by Wood (187 for 9). Farhan Ahmed (2*) came in and played the ball to the covers, it looked a comfortable single as his brother dived over the ball but he went for a risky second. The throw from Trevaskis from the point boundary was fast and straight but with the situation tight, Cox failed to gather the ball before breaking the stumps. Notts had got home….just! Notts 189-9 off 19.5 overs after the Foxes, who failed to utilise the short boundaries sufficiently, had only lost two wickets. Sams 12-ball 33 proved pivotal in Notts unexpected win. Notts remain in sixth place and wait five days before Durham visit Trent Bridge next Friday. MAG

Leicestershire call this fixture "Battle at the Bridge":
Silver Fox welcomes back Dillon Pennington from suspension, as Outlaws announce a fifteen man squad:
In spite of the previous timings with double headers at Trent Bridge, this Notts game starts at 3PM on Sunday as the Pursehouse Blaze start their game in the morning.
Will Silver Fox put his glasses on and read the writing on the wall? Or will he "know" it's an equation of mathematical improbabilities written there?
Derbyshire, Worcestershire and Yorkshire all in the same saloon bar as Notts, quoting that they only need "momentum" and "getting on a run" media spiel. After four rounds they'll be as drunk as lords!
Looking at the league table, it's dusting yourself down time, and taking results on the chinny chin chin.
ReplyDeleteWill the old sage of a coach, or more aptly, the legend in his own mind, stray from protocol, and change the team. Stone, has an excuse of being "rusty", but in all honesty, he went round the park last season in this competition.Lets face it, his stats for Notts on the rare occasions he has been fit, have not been good. He is not alone though, with all the Notts bowlers taking a hammering.
Historically, Notts have always been there or there abouts in the T20
The transition from losing so many match winners, to finding a winning formula with the present squad, remains an ongoing challenge for management, not helped by team selection, and poor overseas recruitment.
Mark Stevenson
It seems that there are too many permeations and things which would need to happen for us to qualify.
DeleteWinning two matches on the spin would need to be one of them…..
Today was a good game. They notched 100 in 62 balls but then less than a run a ball for the next 3.5 overs. Sams I thought bowled better than his figures suggested. But I thought the partnerships towards the end would take it away from us.
By a distance Clarke is our best batsman and again he showed it. I’d also support - when we cannot qualify - giving the others a go but in truth Oeter is rebuilding around stil quite a fragile team. I don’t imagine this competitionn has done Lyndon James any good at all in terms of his morale
Moores and Sam’s got us back in it. Both got out when trying to win the game in a blaze of unnecessary glory
Nice to have a close game for once but as I say it won’t matter unless we can go on a winning run ….

ReplyDeleteDeleted, as couldn’t spell Trent Bridge correctly but what a game of t20 cricket 🏏 that really was - it had everything in that game really
DeleteSuch a huge shame the second Blaze game in a row was a near wash out and seems almost impossible in this summer of seemingly endless hot 🥵, sunny days to cop it twice
After batting well this season, should the much maligned Tom Moores have decided/been pushed into going down the white ball route a few seasons ago ? Whilst his keeping will always be just average at best, he showed yet again yesterday that he clearly has ability in slogging a white cricket 🏏 ball with his good eye and very fast bat speed. He is also adept at hitting boundaries on slow, tired 🥱 surfaces which I don’t think he always gets the credit for
ReplyDeleteGuess his Richard Whiteley(conundrum) was that he was never going to land the big paying deals around the globe 🌎 so would only be setting his sights at a white baller with Notts, a possible gig in the Hundred and some sort of nondescript, relatively obscure tournament in the back of beyond each close season ?
Kathmandu, nondescript? Mr Tumble didn't even keep wicket there - he was a specialist batsman only.
