On Friday we went to the SCG to watch the World Cup match between South Africa and West Indies.
It was a warm, sunny day and South Africa batted first and scored a mammoth 408 - 5. The highlight was an astonishing display of controlled hitting from De Villiers; what a player. His 162 not out came from 66 balls. The West Indies captain Holder was dispatched to all parts of the ground and he finished with 10 overs 1 for 104. Quite why Gayle was withdrawn from the bowling attack remains a mystery as he had bowled 4 overs 2 for 21. There was no hope for the West Indies' batsmen and any hope of them getting anywhere near the SA total was extinguished when Gayle was bowled for 3 by the impressive Kyle Abbott. They finished on 151 with Holder scoring 56.
On Saturday we caught the train north and watched the final day's play in the Sheffield Shield between New South Wales and Western Australia at the simply titled Newcastle No 1 Sports Ground. Free admission here. NSW were 5 wickets down for 65 overnight and soon collapsed to 97 all out. Ashton Agar bowled extremely well [20 overs 4-22] and is now back in serious consideration for the Ashes party. Western Australia required 143 to win in just over two sessions and comfortably completed the task for 3 wickets. WA's captain Adam Voges was named MOM for his first innings 87 and second of 54 no. Having led the Perth Scorchers to Big Bash triumph he is on course to lift the Sheffield Shield. The win at Newcastle places them at the top of the ladder. Mind you NSW are missing Test men Warner, Watson, Smith, Clarke, Haddin and Hazlewood from their ranks
