As an apéritif to the day's main course an hour or so's action a Lady Bay was sampled. On view was a Derbyshire second eleven taking on a Nottinghamshire's equivalent. Only a handful of spectators had been tempted by this friendly fixture.
Derbyshire were batting and had lost George Sellers early doors to Will Gidman's fifth ball for a duck. That brought to the crease "G Oldfield" and after google this appears to be a Greg Oldfield, a South African who must be on a trial with Derbyshire and might possibly have other potential employers lined-up for trials with too. Oldfield didn't look totally green (so I surmise that Google is correct) but did look slightly out of place with other Derbyshire lads as he was wearing a traditional cream coloured generic cricket attire whilst his team mates wore the Vanish, "not one, not two but three shades whiter" uniform.
Oldfield, whilst not being a tear-away, out scored his batting partner Ben Slater, who has had several opportunities with Derbyshire's senior sides, and the pair made steady progress against a strong Notts seam attack that comprised of : Luke Wood, Will Gidman, Andy Carter and Ben Kitt.
Both the Derbyshire batters showed little concern from any of Kitt, Wood or Gidman, with Kitt, looking from the sidelines, to be the quickest of those three, though in need of some adjustment to his radar; a number of byes were conceded by Tom Moores whose keeping was a little ordinary during the session.
The introduction of Andy Carter, bowling with a leisurely run up but generating adequate pace and bounce with his height and quick action, managed to trouble both of the now set batsmen. Oldfield ducked into one Carter delivery and required minor medical attention and a helmet swap. Slater also turned his back one a Carter delivery and was struck on the back/ shoulder.
As the session drew to a break, first Slater gave Will Root a catch in front of the pavilion and then Oldfield gave a catch to Matt Carter, fielding in the slips area, both off the bowling Ben Kitt who was bowling from the Hockey court end.
Whilst another fixture was taking place back down Radcliffe Road, the Carter brothers shared 5 wickets as the visitors were bowled out. DDG
