v Kent Spitfires RLODC at Trent Bridge

Titch ton but SAM TAKES TOP BILLINGs

A poor bowling performance meant that Notts lost for the first time this season in the 50 over competition; in a match which included two tons and a hat trick. Kent needed an unlikely 106 runs from the final 10 overs but got there with eight balls unused as Sam Billings finished on 118.

On a cloudy day Kent won the toss and inserted Notts, who rested Harry Gurney. .

Wessels looked in fine form caressing the ball to all parts whilst scoring 41 in 42 balls hitting eight fours in the process. He fell to catch at point off the frugal Stevens. Hales and Wessels had 84 runs in 13 overs. Hales and James Taylor carried onthe good progress as. Stevens apart. the Kent attack was decidedly mediocre. Hales although not in fluent form got to 81 when he was caught at mid off by Captain Sam Northeast off Mitch Claydon. His innings contained seven fours and two sixes. The second wicket added 96 in 18 overs. Brendan Taylor got to 18 before edging Claydon to keeper Billings, 210 for three. Patel was caught and bowled off a full toss from Hunn for four, Notts now 225 for four.
James Taylor and Dan Christian went for all out attack adding 106 runs in 10 overs. Christian who hit Claydon over The Fridge for six raced to 50 in 30 balls and James Taylor got to his ton in 105 balls. Tredwell had bowled 10 overs for 76 runs. Notts were well placed to get to 350 on 331 for four with 14 balls remaining; however a dramatic collapse saw them lose their last six wickets for four runs off ten balls. Christian holed out to the deep mid wicket ropes off Matt Coles his 59 by far his best innings for Notts had come off 36 balls with six fours and one six. The batsman had crossed and James Taylor fell to the next ball to a fine caught and bowled chance by Coles instinctively catching the driven shot low drive. Titch left to a standing ovation his 109 came off 111 balls with four fours and one six. It became three wickets in three balls as Mullaney was caught for a duck at short third man by Bell-Drummond off Claydon. Bell-Drummond taking the catch on the rebound after initially dropping the chance above his head. Two balls later Hutton was bowled for a golden duck. Read having taken a single of ball two. Notts now 332 for eight. They got three runs off the remaining three balls off over 49. Coles took a hat trick bowling Fletcher for two. The mayhem finished with Ball running down the pitch off his first ball to run out without scoring. Notts 335 all out. Claydon picked up four for 66 and Coles three for 54. Stevens was Kent's most economical bowler going for 37 runs off his 10 overs. These last two overs were to prove decisive later.

Notts got a wicket in the 11th ball of the reply when Denly edged Hutton into Read's gloves for 4, 13 for one. In the eighth over Hutton bowled Northeast for 10, Kent 44 for two. The support bowling proved expensive as the third wicket added 78 in 14 overs until Cowdrey drove Patel to James Taylor at mid off depart for a 49 ball 51. This is bought in danger man Sam Billings who got off the mark with switch hit four. He rode his luck a bit earlier on but was to play the match winning innings. Bell-Drummond was getting bogged down by Patel but were 59 were added for the fourth wicket in nine overs when the returning Hutton from the Radcliffe Road End bowled Bell-Drummond for 81 an innings off 77 balls with eight fours and one six, Kent now 181 for four. Darren Stevens never really got going in the twilight and was caught behind off the expensive Christian for nine, 207 for five with 14 overs left.

Christian had replaced Patel from the Pavilion End a bad error of judgment by the captain to take off a bowler bowling well. Billings was then dropped by Read on 58 as he top edged a shot, Read sprinting in, had to dive forwards, but the difficult chance failed to stick, Fletcher the bowler.

Patel returned for his ninth over from Radcliffe Road and went for a momentum turning 21 as Billings hit him for two sixes and a four. When in the next over Fletcher, clearly struggling for fitness went for 17, Kent suddenly now only needed 68 off eight overs. The match had turned and there was no way back for Notts. The bowling at the death was less than satisfactory as line and length went astray. Indeed after hardly giving the opposition an extra in recent games Notts gave away 25 including 10 no balls and 10 wides..

Blake was equally destructive as Billings as Notts badly missed Tahir and Gurney. Billings eventually finished on a brilliant 118 off 89 balls with 12 fours and three sixes and Blake 50 off 36 balls with fours fours and one six. The sixth partnership had added a scarcely believable 133 in 12.4 overs, shades of the Sussex 2008 decider at Trent Bridge.

Christian is at best a sixth bowler and Fletcher who went for 74 runs had played himself out of the team. Hutton was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets but went for 72, as his lack of List A experience was exposed towards the end. Ball deserved more than 10-0-49-0, but luck deserted him on the day.

Luckily for Outlaws, with Hampshire losing against Lancashire this Kent game turned out to no more than a dead rubber game from a Notts perspective, as the home quarter final is now guaranteed. After the conclusion of this game, Mick Newell should have a much clearer picture of his desired one-day line up. Notts long unbeaten run had to end of some point, it is was one of the games when everything seemed to go right for the visitors.. MAG

  1. A rare failure by Mr Useful as well. Altogether a bad day at the home office. Pity Notts have saved some really rubbish performances for Trent Bridge. Yorkshire, Leicestershire, now Kent...............
