Smith Cooper

New Stand Named

The Club decided that the best idea to announce that they had sold-off naming rights to the New Stand to a firm of accountants, was to release that news at sometime before 6.30AM this morning.

(Some) Fans had hoped that the New Stand, dubbed the "Fridge" by regulars because of its lack of exposure to direct sunlight and the resultant drastically lower temperatures, was to be named after either the recently departed CEB Rice (RIP) or current playing legend and captain, Chris Read - but alas not.

Perhaps this financial deal is designed to recoup some of the predicted loss for 2016, but what could be more boring a name than Smith Cooper Stand? Apologies to all Smiths and Coopers. To cap it off, Smith Cooper are accountants - yawn! Perhaps cricket still finds it hard to shake off those stereotypical stigmas of being boring, undeserved, as I'm sure everyone reading would agree but they don't help themselves either.

Casual observer - "oh Smith Cooper Stand, that's new!"

Member - "yes, they're a company of accountants"

Casual observer - "oh, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"

It probably makes sense in a monetary terms, that has to be good for the club, but it isn't very inspiring either.

Will the shirt sponsors be called in to sell off the naming rights to the other stands around the iconic Trent Bridge venue?
