v Yorkshire Vikings NWT20 Blast at Trent Bridge

YORKSHIRE FAIL TO READ THE SCRIPT AS OUTLAWS SNATCH THRILLING WIN

Notts qualified for the Twenty/20 quarter finals with an exciting three wicket victory over Yorkshire in front of a crowd of 12, 595 at TB last night. Chris Read was named as man of the match with a crucial 35 not out off 17 balls with four fours and one six to turn the game round for Notts.

On a cloudy evening Yorkshire captain Alex Lees won the toss and chose to bat. Luke Fletcher came into the team for Jake Ball. Once again Patel opened the bowling and his first over went for 12 including a 4 and 6 from Lyth. Harry Gurney opened up from the Radcliffe Road End and after four dot balls to Lees he then comprehensively bowled him off ball five and conceded a single of the last ball. Fletcher was also economical as the pair in tandem conceded just 19 in four overs, Yorkshire 31 for one off five overs. All the good work was undone as Christian once more foolishly bowled himself in the powerplay. It was all utter tripe as twenty-three runs were conceded as Lyth gorged himslf on an all-he-could-eat buffet, not helped by five wides down the leg side, stick to your batting Captain

Patel returned as Lyth skied to Tahir to deep cover for a 21 ball 39, 55 for two. Tahir though opened up with a no ball that went for 4 as 19 were scored off his opening over. Head making his debut was slogging every ball and was riding his luck somewhat but 67 were added in seven overs with the excellent Williamson before the returning Gurney had him caught by Wessels at long on. Head 40 off 25 balls including four sixes. Yorkshire 122 for 2 after 13.2 overs looked on course for a score well in excess of 200, but magnificent death bowling from Tahir, Fletcher and Gurney restricted them to just 38 runs off the last 6.4 overs. Gurney (4-0-16-3) and Fletcher (4-0-20-0) respectively. Williamson was caught by the running Tahir at short fine leg off Mullaney for 39. Plunkett hit Tahir for six into the Fox Road but was then stumped by Read. The leg spinner conceding 16 off his last three overs having switched to the Pavilion End. Bresnan struggling for timing went for a run a ball 17 bowled by Gurney who went for just four singles in his last over. Yorkshire closing on 160 for seven, a below par total. The boundaries though had pushed out compared to previous game against Worcester.

Yorkshire opened up with Bresnan and Michael Lumb hit his second ball for a six over extra cover. Azeem Rafiq then bowled from the Radcliffe Road End and an ugly attempted sweep from Lumb saw him bowled by the spinner for eight. Smith hit Bresnan for a couple of fours but off the first ball of the fourth over Wessels was caught at short fine leg for two, Steve Patterson the bowler, 25 for two. Christian and Smith added 22 the former hitting Plunkett for a huge six. The six coming off the seventh ball of the over; a controversial no ball being given by umpire Saggers for Yorkshire breaking fielding restrictions, Yorkshire captain Lees being incensed by the decision.

Christian then holed out to the long deep mid wicket boundary for 12 as Patterson picked up his second wicket. Notts closed the powerplay on 50 for 3. Smith and Patel added 51 in six overs, as spinners Rafiq and Rashid came together and turned the screw. Rhodes with Hucknall connections came on and was hit for 4,6,1 as Patel finally looked to have a big over. Unfortunately next ball Smith miscued Rhodes to short third man to leave with a run a ball 32 to his name. Taylor only lasted three balls being bamboozled by Rashid’s leg spin and being leg before for one, 100 for five. Mullaney (1) was then gormlessly run out charging down the pitch from the non strikers end when a single was not on, Notts 102 for six in the 14th. Rashid and Rafiq looked to have won the game with figures of 4-0-23-1 and 4-0-21-1 respectively; Notts needing 42 off the last four overs. Over 17 bowled by Patterson went for 13, then Bresnan went for 15. Notts now needing just 14 off the last two. They got there with two balls to spare and now top the Northern Group with two games to play. The experience of Patel and Read proving invaluable adding 56 in six overs.

With only three required to win off the last over, Patel swung and missed from the first two balls from Liam Plunkett and then frustratingly he then threw his wicket away skying to wide mid off. Luckily the batsman crossed and Read hit the winning runs with a four through backward point. Patel not at his most fluent best had made an 58 off 47 balls with two fours and two sixes.

Notts now face their most important game of the season with a championship game against Somerset starting tomorrow; a game they have to win being now deep in the relegation mire with games running out. MAG

  1. Clearly, my earlier comments about DC cameo bowling went unheeded. FFS in this form of cricket giving away one run could be crucial, IMO one over for 23 runs including 5 wides is a disciplinary offence. As MAG says above DC should stick to batting from now on.

Great to have Read back. I'm sure he'll have a quiet word with DC.
