v Yorkshire Vikings RLODC at Scarborough

TIM BRESNAN SEES YORKSHIRE HOME IN TENSE FINISH

After being 46 for five after the first hour Notts did extremely well to take this game to the last over, but Yorkshire got home with two balls and two wickets to spare thanks to a List A best of 95 not out from Tim Bresnan in front of large crowd at North Marine Road, Scarborough.

Greg Smith, Brendan Taylor and Samit Patel all recording ducks Notts had a nightmare start on a wicket with plenty of carry and they never quite recovered from it.

Yorkshire won the toss and inserted Notts who announced an unchanged line up. After a maiden from Bresnan from the Peasholm Park End, Notts making steady progress. Wessels hitting Willey for three fours. Off the last ball of the fifth over, Lumb (9) miscued a drive off Bresnan as captain Lees took the catch at mid off, 24 for one. Three overs later Greg Smith frustrated with not getting off the mark hit David Willey straight to Travis Head on the square leg ropes, Smith gone for a 13 ball duck, 30 for two. Wessels hit Bresnan for a straight six but two balls later Taylor was caught behind off Bresnan for a nine ball duck Notts 38 for three after 11 overs. Patel was dropped third ball at second slip by Lyth off Willey but the very next ball the left armer had Patel out leg before as he also departed for a duck, 39 for four. Wessels who had hit 36 out of the 46 runs scored then played an irresponsible shot off Plunkett who had replaced Willey from the Trafalgar Square End the ball skying to Lees at mid off, 46 for five.

The match looked over as a contest.

Christian and Mullaney added 85 runs in 16 overs for the sixth as Notts fought back. Rafiq bowling from the Trafalgar Square End proved expensive his two overs costing 26 runs including three sixes, two by Christian and Mullaney. Christian got to 50 off 58 balls but was then brilliantly caught by diving Lees at backward point for 52 Patterson the bowler, an innings which lasted 65 balls with three sixes and two fours, 131 for six in the 31st over.

Read hit Patterson for a straight six but perished caught behind off Willey for 15, 162 for seven in the 38th over. Mullaney and Fletcher had to consolidate but then Fletcher was dropped on the deep mid wicket boundary when on eight by Travis Head who, to make matters worse, let the ball trickle for four. Bowler Rafiq got his revenge three balls later when Fletcher was stumped for 13, 183 for eight in the 44th over.

Jake Ball hit a bright and breezy 27 off 16 balls including two fours and two sixes off Rafiq and Rashid, but then he was bowled by Patterson in the 49th over. Mullaney hit the last over from Willey for 18 including two sixes. Mullaney finished 89 not out off 94 balls with five sixes and two fours. Notts 251 for nine, probably 50 under par but some recovery from 46 for five. Bresnan who bowled eight overs two for 24 at the start of the innings, strangely never returned to bowl. Rafiq bowled five overs for 49.

Ball (Trafalgar) and Gurney (Peasholm) opened up and Lyth went for all out attack hitting Ģurney for two huge sixes. Gurney going for 23 in his first two overs. In over six, Lyth hit a Gurney slower ball for four through extra cover but perished next ball caught at mid on by Fletcher for a 26 ball 39,, 44 for one. Head who looked an out and out slogger at The Bridge perished second ball going for a big hit he skyed it and Fletcher took an easy catch at mid on as the ball came back down from orbit, two wickets for Gurney. Notts suddenly had the initiative and next over Ball had Leaning caught behind for a three ball duck, 46 for three. It could have been even better but Mullaney failed to hold Rashid at second slip off Ball. Next over from Ball saw Lees edge to Mullaney who once again dropped the chance but luckily he had better footwork as he kicked the ball to Read who took the ball on the ricochet. Lees gone for seven, 50 for four in the ninth. Ball with pace and getting plenty of lift was proving a handful.

Yorkshire weathered the storm Fletcher and Patel replaced Ball and Gurney. Bresnan and Rashid were batting sensibly. Read had to turn to his fifth bowler which turned out to be Christian and Mullaney in combination. The fifth wicket stand reached 97 runs in 22 overs when Rashid pulled Christian bowling from the Trafalgar Square End straight to Fletcher at long leg in front of the Pavilion who took an easy catch. Rashid dropped on nought had made 41 off 65 balls with two fours and one six off Fletcher, 147 for five.

Gurney and then Ball returned but luck was against the respective bowlers as Bresnan had Chinese cuts for four against the pair of them. Gurney was then replaced at the Peasholm Park End by Fletcher who had Willey taken at deep square leg by Ball for 15, 191 for six. Three overs later Plunkett was caught at long leg by Fletcher off Christian for 10, 25 for seven. Fletcher equalling the Notts List A record for most catches in an innings with four, a most unlikely record for the Big Man. Bresnan and Hodd then added a further 19 in four overs until Hodd was plumb leg before to the Australian for 12. Yorkshire needed 28 off the final 31 balls to win. Bresnan however was still there and with no real tail they still remained favourites. Read elected to keep Christian on from the Trafalgar Square End and Gurney returned from the Peasholm Park End. These two batted sensibly dealing in singles. Twenty were required off three over and then 15 off two. Christian was then hit for four by Rafiq through mid wicket and the tension in the crowd eased. It was left to Fletcher to bowl the last over with just six required after conceding four off the first three balls, Rafiq drove him through extra cover to win the game for The Tykes. Bresnan finished with 95 not out off 128 balls with six fours and two sixes, coupled with his excellent new ball spell he had been the star of the game. Notts can take heart from a fine fighting bowling performance with Christian getting plenty of bounce bowling 10 overs three for 44. Fletcher getting plenty of stick from the home crowd went for 41 off 9.4 overs.

It was the first hour though that had killed Notts with batting more reminiscent of the red ball stuff with too many batsman culpable for their own dismissals. The crowd had witnessed a memorable day's cricket in fine weather at the famous old venue. MAG
