Notts Injury Roll-Call 2017

14/12/17 BBCSport
Nottinghamshire bowler Luke Fletcher has been given the all-clear to return to training following a head injury.
Fletcher, 29, has been out of action since being struck on the head by the ball during a T20 Blast match in July.
He has been able to bowl in the nets recently, but the news from the doctor means can train from 8 January and return to matches for the 2018 season.
"It's very pleasing to finally get the nod to start full training again," Fletcher told the club website.
He added: "I've felt pretty good throughout once things settled down, but it's nice to get the official word that everything is OK.
"The consultant says he's really happy with how things are looking. I have passed all the computer tests I have been doing at the hospital and there has been improvement since the injury back in July."
Fletcher was hit by a straight drive from Birmingham Bears batsman Sam Hain while bowling, later admitting he had "dodged a bullet" by escaping further injury.

Following their promotion to Division One, Nottinghamshire begin their County Championship season against Lancashire on 13 April 2018.

England pace bowler Jake Ball has sustained ankle ligament damage and is a doubt for the final warm-up match before the first Ashes Test.
Scans revealed the 26-year-old strained his right ankle ligament during day two of the warm-up game against a Cricket Australia XI in Adelaide.
The England medical team will assess the injury over the next week and he will play no further part in the match.

New policy behind rise in player concussion reports, says CA.

Cricket Australia (CA) has implemented a long-term plan to reduce the incidence of spinal injuries in fast bowlers.  A detailed annual CA injury report, released for the first time publicly on Wednesday, revealed 3.6 new lumbar spine bone stress injuries per 100 players in 2016-17 – slightly above the 10-year average.  The report showed that an average of 23.2 per cent of pace bowlers, that is one in four, were unavailable at any given time during the season, the highest rate in five years.
Managing the workloads of top junior cricketers is at the core of CA's plan to reduce the amount of spinal injuries, which have long plagued Test fast bowlers.  James Pattinson, Peter Siddle and Pat Cummins are just some of the elite Australian quicks who have suffered debilitating back injuries in recent times.  Cummins is fit again but Siddle hasn't played a Test in 12 months and Pattinson is hopeful surgery will finally heal a bone in his back that has fractured four times in the same place since 2003.
CA sports science and sports medicine manager Alex Kountouris said the key to reducing spinal injuries was in early prevention during fast bowlers' formative years.  "At junior level we're looking at setting goals for them, how many balls they should bowl in a week and actually trying to get there”, Kountouris said. "It's just trying to make sure that they're getting the nice constant loading throughout the development years, which will make their bones stronger and have them more resilient later on in their career".
"We work with the coaches in doing that to get the balance between making sure they've got the skill and they're prepared to play, and they're going to play at their best and perform at their best, but at the same time not overloading them so they don't break down.  It's very, very common in younger players, their spines aren't fully developed. Not just in cricket, in other sports they develop these stress fractures in the spine”, he said.  “[CA’s] now spending a lot of time in the younger age groups, we're identifying kids as young as 12 now. We've got Under-12 championships, Under-15s, that's why we've done that to try to identify those bowlers nice and early”.
Last season's incidence of spinal injuries was only half of what was suffered in the 2015-16 season, although CA has identified a trend suggesting a player is more likely to suffer a back problem in a year where Australia plays a winter Ashes series.  "The higher than average lumbar and lower limb stress fractures is a likely indication of the demands of the modern game, where players transition between formats and have increasingly shorter pre-seasons and recovery periods," Kountouris said.
The CA injury report also revealed an increase in the number of recorded concussions last season, the figure rising to 8.3 per 100 players.  That number has doubled in the past three seasons, which Kountouris said was a direct result of CA's concussion and head trauma policies, the figure for 2015-16 being 4.4/100 and 2014-15 2.2/100.   "We expected that because we've had a concussion policy for the last three years and every year concussion rates go up, mainly because we've got this process in place where we're checking players after every head knock and we're picking up the really mild concussions now which maybe we've missed in the past”, Kountouris said.
"After every head impact, irrespective of whether the doctor thinks the player has a concussion or not, they're going through a process. Then we follow up the next day and we do the same thing – sometimes you can get delayed concussions. Every year our policies become stricter. We're just catching more and more people”, he said.  "We hope it'll probably level off at some point probably in the next year or two, we don't expect it to keep going up because we really don't think there's been an increase in head impacts or concussions we just think it's the way we're defining it”.

CA injury report 2016-17 key findings were: Concussion increase to 8.3 cases per 100 players; 8.3/100 new hamstring injuries; 3.6/100 new lumbar spine stress fracture injuries; 3.2/100 lower limb bone stress injuries; an average of 23.2 per cent of fast bowlers unavailable at any given time; and an overall average of 13.2 per cent of players unavailable at any given time.

Nottinghamshire seamer Luke Fletcher is set to resume training for the first time since being hit in the head by the ball in a T20 Blast match in July.
The 29-year-old, who was struck by a straight drive from Birmingham Bears' Sam Hain on his follow-through, is to return to training on 8 November.
Fletcher said he was "lucky" to escape serious injury after the incident.
"The consultant is extremely happy with his progress so far," physiotherapist James Pipe told Notts' website.
"The key thing is that, at every step of the way, we have been guided by Fletch's hospital consultant and we've had to make sure he has been given the necessary recovery time.

"We are confident he will make a full return to training in time, but we have to be careful there is no second impact on the injury for obvious reasons, particularly until after Christmas when he would be more at risk, so he will be making a graded return."

The lesser-spotted Footitt is out for the rest of the season.

18/09/17

Mark Footitt still has his pain in the neck and misses his third consecutive championship game. Are we getting value for money?
Are Surrey having a cheeky laugh at Notts' expense, having off loaded an apparent lemon? Buyer beware!

27/08/17

Back with Notts 5 minutes (and six weeks), Mark Footitt misses the championship game against Northants due to an "injury".

Diagnosed as a pain in the neck.

Pay dispute sorted, Australia haven't selected James Pattinson for the tour of Bangladesh, however he is carrying an injury and so is unlikely, alas, to return to Notts in 2017.

19/07/17
Nottinghamshire batsman Michael Lumb has been forced to retire with immediate effect because of an ankle injury.

18/07/17

Jake Ball is expected to be fit by Friday and is available to play against Derbyshire and then Northants on Saturday.

12/07/17
“Following consultation with doctors, Luke has been ruled out for the rest of the 2017 season to allow adequate time to recover and complete a monitored care plan to ensure he has a safe return to play,” said Director of Cricket Mick Newell.
“Whilst we are all obviously very disappointed, Luke's health is of paramount importance and comes first.

“We will continue to give him every support as he undergoes his recovery.”

09/07/17

After his bump on the head at Edgbaston, Luke Fletcher has concussion.

Sunday morning the big guy Tweeted

Thanks again for all the kind messages!! Hope the ball is recovering as well as me 😂😂👍👍

Late afternoon Sunday Fletch had been discharged from hospital.

27/06/17 Jake Ball limped off for a scan on Day 2 against Kent
A scan later revealed that he's picked up a knee injury that is likely to mean he'll be out of action for 2 weeks, missing the Lord's Final and the First Test.
24/06/17 With Jack Blatherwick back playing again, Stuart Broad has the only berth in the injury roll call, nursing his swore heel. Stuart will miss the floodlit Kent game, starting Monday but PM is reviewing his availability for next week's Lord's Final.

25/05/17 Chris Read is declared fit again. Jack Blatherwick remains as the only announced injury at present.

10/05/17

Luke Wood has bowled in both innings for the Seconds at CLS Riverside, great news, where Brett Hutton was on fire with the ball on day 1.
No Fletch in the squad of 12 for the match on Thursday.

08/05/17

Luke Fletcher left the field early against the Foxes, never to return. Strained arm, whilst fielding is one explanation from spectators that were sat nearby.

Does a bowling crisis loom in the near future?

James Pattinson, call-up by Australia later in the week.
Jake Ball similarly England engaged.
Luke Fletcher?
Luke Wood? Luke played for the Seconds as a batsman on Monday (making a century).
Jack Blatherwick?
Stuart Broad has his orders from Mr Strauss.
03/05/17

Steven Mullaney played for the Second XI earlier in the week but an early return hasn't yet been mentioned.

Andrew Strauss has announced some player availability slots for Notts' England trio:

JB and AH will miss the Edgbaston and Welbeck games BUT are allowed to participate against Durham and Lancashire, also in the ODC.

SB has a green light to play the whole of the ODC competition as well as the following CC2 matches:

- Glamorgan (away): May 19-22
- Gloucestershire (home): May 26-29
- Leicestershire (home): June 19-22
- Kent (home): June 26-29 – day-night round.

SB hasn't been made available for the games against Derbyshire and Gloucestershire, both at the beginning of June.

30/04/17

The word is that Steven Mullaney needs two more weeks recovery whilst Luke Wood was seen bowling at the interval yesterday.

Michael Lumb took his hand for an x ray yesterday - the results of which haven't been released.

25/04/17

In addition to losing the services of James Pattinson because of the ICC Champions Trophy, both Jake Ball and Alex Hales have also been called up for the tournament.

24/04/17

Brendan Taylor is fit again but Steven Mullaney didn't play in the Seconds visit to Denby .

18/04/17

With Brendan Taylor certainly passing his fitness test with the bat, who will make way for him in the senior eleven?

Brendan scored an express century at Sleaford against a Lincolnshire Development XI.

15/04/17

Twitter suggests Brendan Taylor has been in the outdoor nets, especially prepared for him, today at Trent Bridge. Stuart Broad may or may not have been bowling at him.

12/04/17

After 48 hours of negotiations between both Peter Moores and Stuart Broad, himself, with Andrew Strauss at the ECB, Nottinghamshire's request to aid Stuart Broad's quest to maintain rhythm in his bowling, after tweaking his action over the winter, have been rejected by the ECB. Stuart Broad is unlikely to play for England before July but then is expected to have a heavy workload with Tests against South Africa and the West Indies. Broad will no doubt be seen at Chester le Street bowling in the nets but not in the middle. Broad bowled just 21 overs against Leicestershire.

Meanwhile, two England players who play for their country in all three formats and have much heavier International workloads scheduled are allowed, and have the blessing of Lord Brocket to play in the IPL; those being Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes. They're gathering valuable experience according to Strauss, the kind of valuable experience that can be deposited in Barclays and not just Nat West.

Broady can play against Sussex however.

09/04/17

Jake Ball has been released from England confinement, however England plan to confine Stuart Broad to a similar non-active state as Ball was reduced to in the last round of matches, for the Durham game over the Easter weekend.

Peter Moores is to seek common sense from Trevor Bayliss in order to allow Broad to Maintain rhythm in the Durham shoot-out, Stuart not having a overly taxing game with the ball at Leicester. (NP)

04/04/17

Chris Read and Tom Moores appear to be recovered, both playing this week.

New injuries to add to Brendan Taylor's digit are

Steven Mullaney - foot
Luke Wood - side
Jack Blatherwick - undisclosed
