Leicestershire Foxes at Welbeck CC

OUTLAWS BLOW SECOND BEST FOXES AWAY AT WINDY WELBECK

Notts claimed an easy six wicket over Leicestershire at Welbeck today. The visitors 217 all out proved inadequate as Notts won with 11.4 overs to spare. Patel, Taylor and Mullaney all hit half centuries in a comfortable run chase as Notts move to third place in the Northern Section.

Notts unchanged from Birmingham won the toss and inserted Leicester. Fletcher (Marquee) and Gurney (Scoreboard) opened the bowling. Left hander Delport hit Gurney for a six over backward point but in the next over he departed edging Fletcher into the captain’s gloves, the South African gone for eight, 13 for one. In the next over Ali edged Gurney as Read took his second catch, Ali gone for a three ball duck, 18 for 2 after 6 overs. Pattinson replaced Gurney and his first over went for 12. Fletcher after six overs for 17 was replaced by Broad, Shortly afterwards Fletcher left the field with an arm injury and never returned. Experienced pair Pettini and Cosgrove added 65 in 12 overs, the only period of the game that Leicester were in the ascendancy. Pattinson then removed Pettini via a fine leg side catch by Read. Pettini had 4 fours in his 58 ball 39, 83 for three in the 18th. In the 26th over, Broad removed Eckersley's (23) off stump, 121 for four. Hill joined Cosgrove and the pair added 58 before Cosgrove skied the returning Gurney to Patel at point. The role poly Aussie left hander batted excellently for his run a ball 80 with 8 fours; the second time this season that he appeared a class above the rest of The Foxes batting line up. The pacy Pattinson took two wickets with successive balls Hill was removed leg before for 30 and then Rob Sayer was leg before to a yorker from the whole hearted Aussie 187 for seven. Pattinson made it three wickets in four balls as Wells (3) played on to his off stump. In the next over Chappell (1) hit Gurney to point where Patel took the catch, 194 for nine. McKay and Klein added 23 for the last wicket. A slower ball from Broad saw the end of McKay for 14 with Klein 10 not out. Leicester 217 all out with 37 balls unused. Notts had bowled well despite the brisk northerly wind. Pattinson after conceding 19 in his first two overs was the pick of the bowlers with four for 42, with Gurney supporting him with three for 29. Patel and Mullaney both proved more expensive. The Foxes total seemed very much below par.

Lumb fell to the first ball of innings leg before to a well pitched up delivery from the promising Chappell. Patel came in at three and with shots all round the wicket raced to 50 of 30 balls. It was classy innings. Notts 70 for 1 after 10 overs. Wessels departed in the 12th over edging Tom Wells to Lewis Hill behind the wicket. Wessels hitting 20 off 40 balls with three fours, 73 for two. Taylor joined forces with Patel and added 58 in 11 overs. Patel was hitting fours for fun but then was caught on the cover boundary by substitute Jamie Sykes off Zac Chappell for a sublime 79 off 60 balls with 14 fours, the best innings of the day. Mullaney then took up the attack and raced to 50 in 44 balls with six fours and two sixes. He fell to another catch by sub Sykes on the deep square leg boundary off Ali. Mullaney out for five weeks has he two great innings in the last three days. It was left Root (2 not out) to get the winning runs off Wells. Taylor got his second 50 of the competition and finished on 51 not out off 79 balls with five fours. Notts getting home by 6 wickets at 1732. A good day for Nottinghamshire sport. Welbeck has proved a happy hunting ground for the Green and Gold with three victories and one no result since we first played there in 2015. MAG

From the Leicestershire CCC website: Outlaws batsman Riki Wessels has enjoyed (playing at Welbeck) in the past. He scored an unbeaten 85 against Warwickshire and followed it with 114 versus Derbyshire, two games the Outlaws won.
“It’s been quite a generous ground to me over the last two years, so it will be nice to get back there again,” said Wessels.
“It’s strange having a home ground that we don’t actually train on regularly or become familiar with the conditions, like we do at Trent Bridge, but it’s nice to have a strong support base. Perhaps by going there, we are introducing more people to the club.
“It’s sort of crunch time in the competition now, we need to kick on and start winning games if we want to be involved at the back end of the tournament. Leicestershire aren’t to be under-estimated so we’ll have to come out firing.”
