Somerset RLODC Quarter-Final at Taunton

TAYLOR'S SWIFT CENTURY HELPS OUTLAWS WIN IN TAUNTON GUN-FIGHT

Slog-a-thon leaves bowling carnage and crowd breathless

Notts triumphed in a dramatic game where 834 runs were scored and 19 wickets fell. At the half way part Notts looked strong favourites having scored 429 for nine but a great batting effort by Somerset saw them favourites at one stage. Before the experienced guile of Broad and Patel plus the extra pace of Pattinson made the difference. Brendan Taylor came out of his shell to score a brilliant 154. A total of 28 sixes were hit in the match 15 by Notts and 13 by Somerset in a eight hour slog-a-thon

On a sunny morning Somerset inserted Notts on a belting pitch. Allenby opened with the Overton twins and the second over from Jamie went for 20. The first 25 runs were scored by Lumb. Gregory came on and also proved expensive. Notts raced to 79 in 10 overs. Allenby had missed a trick by not going for the spin option until over 10 bowled by Myburgh. Van der Merwe bowled the eleventh over and not the first time Lumb fell to a spinner. Lumb had given Notts a tremendous start scoring 47 off 28 balls with six fours and two sixes, 82 for one. Lumb caught by Jamie Overton at cover. Wessels was in quite superb form smashing the bowling to all parts. One six over square leg off Groenewald went yards over the boundary. It was a surprise when he drove Groenewald in his next over straight to Hose at mid off, Notts 147 for 2 in the nineteenth over. Wessels had had 81 off 62 balls with eight fours and four sixes. The rapid scoring continued as the bowling was pummelled, 156 for two after 20 overs, 195 for two after 25 overs, 234 for two after 30 overs. Patel then out to the last ball of the 35th over in identical fashion as Wessels. This time Craig Overton catching the drive off Gronewald. Patel had made 66 off 69 balls with four fours and two sixes, 280 for three. The third wicket had added 133 in 17 overs. The run-fest continued Taylor got his first List A ton in 69 balls as 75 were added in eight overs. Mullaney hit a 21 ball 37 before being caught at backward point by Gregory off Craig Overton, 355 for four. . Taylor's magnificent innings came to end skying to Elgar at backward point for 154 off 97 balls with 17 fours and five sixes, he has so much ability but has struggled to show it, maybe this will his breakthrough innings. The batsman crossed and next ball Gregory picked up another wicket as Root (9) was caught behind for nine. Read was caught at mid off for a duck, Notts had lost three wickets in four balls with the score on 410. Notts scrambled to 429 for nine off their 50. Craig Overton was most expensive bowler going for 88 runs.
Notts lost five wickets in the last two overs to finish in 429 for nine

Fletcher's first over was smashed for 14 by Myburgh and 55 from first five as Gurney and Fletcher were both going at 11 an over. Gurney then yorked Myburgh who missed and lost his middle peg. Myburgh 44 off 19 balls with ten fours, 55 for one. Next over the out of form Steve Davies was caught at third man by Gurney off Fletcher for 4, 60 for two. Gurney got another victim clean bowled in the next over, this time Allenby on 18, 67 for three. Elgar was then dropped at mid off by Pattinson off Gurney for two, an absolute sitter.Elgar was then dropped on 17 by Read diving to his left off Pattinson. They were were made to pay for these errors, Somerset raced to 172 for three off 20 overs. The fielding was now ragged and the bowling even worse. Patel was expensive in his first spell, but fought back well later. Old foe Trego was going ballistic. He then was caught by right on the deep mid wicket ropes by Lumb off Patel. Trego 66 off 47 balls. Somerset 221 for four off 24 overs. Elgar was riding his luck somewhat more than once just clearing mid on. Finally he departed bowled leg stump making room by Stuart Broad for 91 off 63 balls (11 x 4, 3 x 6), 246 for five off 28 overs. Adam Hose got a 27 ball 32 before being bowled sweeping by Patel, 285 for six. Van der Merwe and Gregory added 50 before the former was bowled off stump for 43, 335 for seven off 38 overs. Broad came back beat Gregory (26) twice for pace then had him caught at wide long on by Mullaney on the run, 344 for eight, 10 overs left. The tension though was still high. Craig Overton got to a run a ball 16 before being caught behind off Pattinson. The Aussie was the best bowler on show in the match, the extra pace troubling most batsman. Finally Jamie Overton and Groenewald added 41 for last wicket in 29 balls. Before a mix up saw Jamie Overton run out for 40 by Broad. Somerset 405 all out with 12 balls unused. The whole crowd numbering 4000 made their way home breathless. MAG

  2. Always good to see Patto back with again with Notts.Hopefully he will go well and help Notts to victory Having said that you cannot help but think Somerset will have set up the wicket to be spin friendly given their strength in that area and Notts weakness...

  6. And what a pity that the tiny capacity (6500) Chelmsford ground is already sold out. I fancied having a day out on Friday.

  7. Just a thought. But now that England have been knocked out of the Champions trophy, Does that mean that Jake Ball will be able to play Friday given that he is not in the England T20 squad?

    1. Surely he needs to rest for two week minimum as wearing an England shirt has a greater energy-sapping effect on the body than normal kit. He'll probably be allowed to play again in September!
