HALESTORM BLOWS GAME IN OUTLAWS' FAVOUR
Another slog fest at Trent Bridge as Notts won a game containing 448 runs by five wickets. On another belting pitch with very short boundaries Notts hero was man of the match Alex Hales with 101 off 47 balls as Yorkshire bowled poorly to concede the second highest domestic T20 successful run chase. Essex scored 225 for three against Sussex at Chelmsford and lost in 2014 being the only higher instance.
The difference between sides was Hales; as Notts once again bowled disappointedly and fielded indifferently. Yorkshire produced two outstanding bits of fielding with Lyth’s catch to dismiss Hales and Willey’s run out of Moores, but still lost. Hales hits the ball so hard and with his long reach proved be too lethal on a pitch with no terrors whatsoever; he is fearsome opponent with few equals. Notts are now well placed to qualify with games against Worcester and Durham still to come. The match aggregate was one short of the Notts record made nine days ago against Derbyshire. The six count this time was 21 (Notts 11, Yorkshire 10).
Notts won the toss and inserted Yorkshire. Billy Root came in for his T20 debut in place of Luke Wood. Samit Patel conceded nine off the first over including a huge six over mid wicket by Kohler-Cadmore. Gurney bowling from the Radcliffe Road End conceded 11 including two wides. Ball went for 11 in the third over. It got no better as Sodhi went for 13, 44 for no wicket off four overs. The 50 partnership between Lyth and Kohler-Cadmore was reached in 29 balls. Kohler-Cadmore hit the hapless Gurney for successive sixes, Gurney 2 overs for 32. Root was the next lamb to the slaughter going for 17 in his sole over, Yorkshire 83 for 0 at the end of the power play. Mullaney removed Kohler-Cadmore with his first ball caught by Ball at long off; he had hit 37 off 18 balls with four fours and three sixes, Mullaney going for four off his first over. David Willey failed being caught at long on by Wessels off Patel for two, 87 for two. Patel going for four in the eighth over. Lyth got to his 50 off 26 balls, Mullaney two overs for 11. Lyth deposited Patel for six into the Fox Road but going for a repeat shot was caught Root, Lyth 59 off 30 balls (8 x 4. 2 x 6) Yorkshire 109 for three off 10 overs. Mullaney went for eight off over number 11.
Left hander Marsh hit Sodhi for a massive straight six. Things got more embarrassing as Sodhi bowled five wides. The leg spinner two overs for 30; he never returned. Peter Handscomb joined the party hitting Mullaney for six into Fox Road, Mullaney four overs 1 for 33. Handscomb was dropped at deep mid wicket on 15 by Taylor off Ball. Twelve off the over. Yorkshire 160 for three off 14 overs. Handscomb square cut Christian for six in an over leaking 15. Patel once more bowling well had Handscomb leg before missing a switch hit. The Australian had made 31 (2 x 4, 2 x 6) off 17 balls, 177 for four. Patel three for 29 off four overs; another fine bowling effort from Samit. Dan Christian kept himself on in preference to bowing Gurney and was hit for six over mid wicket by Leaning. Christian (2-0-28-1) bowled Marsh for 47 off 28 balls (6 x 4, 1 x6), Yorkshire 193 for five off 17 overs. Ball bowled the next over as Yorkshire stood on 201 for five off 18 overs. Gurney returned and conceded four singles, Gurney three overs for 36. Ball bowled the last over four leg byes was followed by four by Leaning through fine leg. Next ball sailed over mid wicket for six. Yorkshire 223 for five after 20 overs. Another poor bowling performance from Notts, Ball with his knee heavily strapped fours overs for 42. Leaning 28 not out and Bresnan four not out.
Willey opened up from the Pavilion End as Hales hit him for successive fours in an over costing nine. Bresnan was hit over mid wicket for six by Wessels and then Wessels hit him for consecutive fours. Notts 25 for no wicket after two overs. Hales hit Willey for four boundaries in five balls in over three and followed it up for six over mid wicket, 22 off the over. The fifty partnership between Hales and Wessels was achieved in 19 balls as Wessels for six hit Bresnan into The Fridge. Three more fours followed; Bresnan two overs for 34. Plunkett replaced Willey and the carnage continued as he was hit for a massive six into the back of the Larwood and Voce, 16 off the over. Hales dragged Rafiq four through fine leg as he reached 50 off 18 balls. Wessels holed to long on off Rafiq, Lyth taking the catch; Wessels 34 off 15 balls (5 x 2, 2 x 6), 87 for one after 5.4 overs. Moores promoted up the order hit Rafiq for four, Notts 91 for one at the end of the power play. Hales went for a risky two off Rashid and Moores was run out for 5, Notts 93 for two. A brilliant throw from Willey on the boundary in front of the Hound Road, Moores is very fast between the wickets but could not make his ground. Hales hit Rafiq for six over mid wicket, 105 for two after eight overs. Hales was hitting the ball very hard as Rashid conceded two thunderous fours. Fifteen came off Rafiq's third over, Notts 131 for two off 10 overs. Patterson's first over went for eight. The fifty partnership between Hales and Taylor was achieved in 30 balls. Plunkett went for 13 as Notts stood at 152 for 2 off 12 overs. Patterson then conceded 12 as required rate was now 8.57 RPO. Rafiq was hit over long on for six by Hales who then reached his 100 off 45 balls with 14 fours and one six. Notts 175 for two off 14 overs. It took a brilliant catch at long on by Adam Lyth on the long on ropes off Willey to remove Hales two balls later for 101, 177 for three. The third wicket had added 83 in eight overs. Willey's third over going for three. Notts needed 46 off five overs. Next over Taylor was leg before to Rashid missing the ball to a reverse sweep, Taylor 41 off 26 balls (6 x 4), 184 for four off 16 overs. Rashid four overs one for 33. Christian kept swinging and missing off Patterson, over 17 going for five, Notts now needed 35 off three overs. Willey returned and was hit for successive sixes over mid wicket by Christian. The third ball went for six over long on. A dot ball followed and then Christian edged a short ball from Willey into Handscomb's gloves. Christian 24 off 15 balls. Notts now needed 17 off 13 balls. Willey four overs two for 52. Five came off Patterson first three balls then Mullaney hit him for six over extra cover, a single followed. Notts needed five off the last over bowled by Yorkshire skipper Tim Bresnan and Mullaney hit him over his head as ball cleared the boundary by inches. Notts had won the match by five wickets with five balls unused. The forecast rain showers finally arrived 15 minutes after the match completion. Next up Grace Road on Wednesday. MAG

ReplyDeleteI'm yet to be convinced by Sodhi. Perhaps he is taking time adjusting to wickets over here, but with a tally so far of 24 overs 238 runs and 8 wickets his figures hardly stand comparison with those of Samit 28 overs 203 runs and 9 wickets. Baffling decision to bowl Root in the power play and after three matches in which he didn't bowl, the captain indulged himself with inevitable (bad) result going for fourteen an over.
