Derbyshire Falcons NWT20 Blast at County Ground, Derby

OUTLAWS SQUEEZE PAST LEADERS

on night of costly dropped catches

Notts won a tight game against top of the table Derby by 8 runs. Despite both Derby and Forest in action a very large crowd was in attendance. Star of the show was young Tom Moores with 57 off 34 balls; he was named man of the match. He is making an excellent impression in the T20 competition with both bat and gloves. Derby will regret a poor performance in the field that cost them the game but they remain top of the pile. Notts bowling was uneven, Sodhi and Mullaney went for 76 off six overs; the rest of bowling was good on a wicket not having the pace of Trent Bridge and on an outfield with long square boundaries. Ball finished with T20 best of three for 33. Notts are batting well in the competition; the bowling is still work in progress.

Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bowl under a cloudless sky. Notts were unchanged once more. Madsen bowled the first over from the City End and conceded nine including an edged four by Hales. Wessels hit Henry through backward point and three balls later pulled him for six. Notts 20 for 0 after two overs. Tahir bowled a long hop to Wessels who was dropped on the square leg ropes by Henry who threw it for six, ten off the over. Madsen came on at the Racecourse End and Hales (7) drove him straight to Reece at extra cover, 30 for one. Madsen’s over went for six including a four through cover by the left handed Moores. Matt Henry returned, nine off the over including a four for Wessels. Madsen then went for seven, Notts 52 for one at the end of the power play. Alex Hughes got the key wicket of the impressive Wessels with his first ball bowled middle stump for 37 off 24 balls (3 x 4, 2 x 6); three singles off the over. Notts were being tied down but Moores hit Viljoen through backward square for four, seven off the over. Moores though carried on the onslaught. He lifted Hughes over square leg for six and then Taylor hit the same bowler for an off driven four. Moores then hit him for four at long on. Notts 79 for two off nine overs. An off driven four from Taylor off Viljoen took Notts to 88 for two at the half way point. Moores hit his second six over long on off Madsen. Two then followed and then Moores hit another six this time over square leg, Madsen 1 for 39, 17 off his last over. Tahir then came back from the Racecourse End and conceded five, 110 for 2 off 12. Moores reached his maiden T20 fifty via a four through fine leg off Viljoen, it came off 31 balls. He then hit a four over third man, 13 off the over. Moores’ excellent innings finished when he skied Tahir to Reece at extra cover, 57 (6 x 4, 3 x 6) off 34 balls, 124 for three. Only four came off the over from the former Notts leg spinner. Taylor never quite got his timing and was caught at extra cover off Cotton for 23 off 22 balls (2 x 4), Notts slowing down at 131 for four off 15 overs. Tahir was dispatched for a massive six over long off by Christian. Tahir delivering four overs for 28. Ben Cotton was pitching the ball up well, seven off the 17th over. Henry was hit for four through backward point by Patel. Christian on 16 was dropped by Hughes at long off, Notts 156 for four off 18 overs. Thirty three priceless runs came off the last two overs. Patel hit Cotton straight for a four and a six, 16 off the penultimate over. Off the penultimate ball of the innings, a full toss from Henry (4-0-46-0) was hit for six over square leg by Christian and then the next ball was hit for six into the hospitality tent by Christian. Notts 189 for four off 20 overs, Christian 30 not out off 16 balls (3 x 6) and Patel 29 not out (2 x 4, 1 x 6). A good effort from Notts; the Derbyshire fielding had been poor throughout.

Patel opened from City End and Godleman hit him for two and then next ball was caught behind by Moores, six off the over. Gurney went for seven off the second over. A short ball from Jake Ball was hit for four by Tom Wood, eight off the over including four dot balls.
A dreadful over from Sodhi went for 16 including three fours. Root then dropped an easy chance on the cover boundary off Gurney, Reece on 14 the lucky batsman, Derby 44 for one off 5 overs. Ball returned and bowled a no ball bouncer to Tom Wood, the free hit did damage to his bat. Next ball and now with a replacement willow he skied to Wessels at point to depart for 24 off 21 balls (4 x 4), 48 for two. Derby completed the power play at 49 for two. Reece hit Mullaney for six over long on, the over costing 11. Samit conceded three singles in the eighth over. Mullaney then was hit over his head as Luis Reece got his second six. He repeated the shot three balls later, and then hit Mullaney for four through backward point, Reece 50 off 27 balls. Mullaney had bowled two overs for 31, Derby 83 for two off nine overs. Madsen then hit Patel for four, the over costing seven. Christian brought himself on for the eleventh over, Reece hitting him straight to Patel at cover. Reece gone for 53, 95 for three off 11 overs. Sodhi then was hit for four over point by Madsen, eight off the over. Christian got hit for four by Gary Wilson, but bowled three wides in four balls. Wilson hit him for another four but then was caught off a full toss by Patel at cover for 10, a second wicket for Christian (2-0-17-2), 116 for four off 13 overs. Sodhi went for six over extra cover, Madsen the batsman. Sodhi having another frustrating game with three overs for 36. Hughes cracked Ball through the covers for four. Madsen tried to hit Gurney through third man but did not quite time it, Gurney taking the catch. Madsen out for 31, 135 for five. Patel conceded 10 off his last over, he finished with one for 26 off four overs; he has been bowling consistently well throughout the competition. Amazingly Sodhi came back on and was hit onto Lund Pavilion roof by Hughes but then the sweeping Smit (6) was leg before to the leg spinner for 6, 153 for six. Sodhi four overs one for 45; still yet to get going. Derby now needed 35 off three overs. Gurney then conceded seven not helped by a fumble from Taylor on the boundary that gave Derby two extra runs. But he made instant riposte by taking a brilliant catch at backward point that saw the end of Hughes for 26 (18 balls – 2 x 4, 1 x 6), Ball the bowler, 164 for seven. Viljoen hit Ball for six over long on. Derby needed 16 off last over. Gurney bowled a dot ball to Henry but then was hit for four through extra cover. A bye was run off the third ball. Viljoen then got a leg bye. Followed by leg bye for Henry. With game now won the last ball was a dot ball. Gurney having a good night had bowled four overs for 24. Derby 181 for seven. Henry 10 not out and Viljoen 9 not out. Derby previously unbeaten at home had been doubled by Notts. Notts now probably need two wins from the last four games and now lie in fourth place in the table. Durham victors over Yorkshire by one run are the opposition at Trent Bridge today. MAG

Derbyshire sit, currently, top of the North Group table, three points ahead of Outlaws who languish in fifth spot. It doesn't take a tactical wizard to draw the conclusion that a win tonight for Outlaws is vitally important.

On limited resources, Derbyshire have made best use of Kolpaks and good Overseas signings in this competition and Notts will have to be at their best, rather than just turning-up as in previous years, to beat their opponents at Derby tonight from 7PM.

Anyone's game tonight with Derbyshire slight favourites by virtue of being at home and in control of putting out a pitch to suit their plans to bring down Notts, discuss.

  1. I wasn't overly impressed with Ish Sodhi tonight (first time of observing) but Harry G was very good at the death.
