Is Hales Walking a Tightrope?

Is Hales Walking a Tightrope?

20/10/18

Alex, after a nondescript season for Nottinghamshire, although just in the T20 format this year, and with only the odd innings of note with Team England, centrally contracted Hales still managed to bag a seat on the plane to Sri Lanka.

Injury to Hales in the summer meant that England looked elsewhere so Alex was arguably lucky to be on that plane.

Monsoon season and competition for spaces in the buoyant England  one day outfit means that now Hales has fallen behind Jonny B and Roy of the Raj in the openers pecking order, every opportunity he gets has to be grabbed and he has to avoid personal failures.

So the spotlight is on Alex Hales at all times.

The dropped catch, the missed run out opportunity were all reported widely in the media and the scorecard records his uncharacteristic pedestrian 23 ball innings and the manner of his dismissal, being drawn out of his crease to be stumped (it was a smart bit of work by the keeper in all fairness).

Having been advised by those he trusts, Hales has chosen a particular path to take; therefore he has to back himself but he has to excel when he gets his chances too, every single time; that's true in the IPL and now it's true in the England set-up, because there's always the other guy if you aren't good enough.

Alex's chosen path is to play exclusively in white ball games, a path that he hopes will lead him to the World Cup next year with England.

But is that path, under the spotlights, more like a tightrope for Alex Hales, where too many wobbles will see him crashing back down to earth.

Then there's the events in Bristol, but we don't need to say anything about those other than they could still wreck his plans and push him off his chosen path into an oncoming bus.

Just when you think you might have him , England snaffle him up again. Although I'm too sure how much white ball Outlaws' action he'll miss...

31/3/18 HALES SAILS TO INDIA

As an additional consquence of Sandpapergate and David Warner's sacking from his IPL franchise, Alex Hales has been signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The IPL starts next week and stretches on beyond the start of the ODC competition in England, meaning Hales will miss the games at Old Trafford and at Welbeck at the very least.

“Clearly, we would have loved Alex to be around for the whole of our 50-over campaign, but we still go into that competition with a very strong squad," Director of Cricket Mick Newell

Without Hales in our last ODC game played in 2017, we would have been nowhere!

23/02HALES IN CARIB DRAFT

It has also been announced that Alex Hales will also be part of the Caribbean Premier League draft process, but it has been emphasised that he will not miss any Outlaws games in the Blast competition which runs at a similar time in August to the CPL.

BAZ QUITS ON CHAMPIONSHIP

The Nottinghamshire first team championship squad has now more holes in it than Alan Hardy's golf course.

Announced today and clearly the reasoning behind Mick Newell's decision to admit that the club were looking for an overseas batsman last week, Alex Hales has extended his Nottinghamshire contract until the end of 2019 but significantly has decided that he'll only play white ball cricket.

Effectively since last we entered a CC1 season, in 2016, we have lost: James Taylor, Brendan Taylor, Michael Lumb, Chris Read, Brett Hutton, Greg Smith and now Alex Hales. Add to that some vital runs last year from our overseas bowler, James Pattinson and it comes clear that remain have to improve drastically because Gnasher and Coughlin aren't going to fill the void alone.

On paper we are short of both runs and wickets for the Championship campaign 2018 and look to be in a battle for survival before we start our first game.

AH: “The decision to focus on my white ball game wasn't taken lightly or on the spur of the moment, it's one I've thought long and hard about. It's also one I've discussed at length with the Notts management. I'd like to thank them for their continued support.”

NP: Notts had been in discussions with the player and his representatives for a number of weeks. They hoped Hales, who was entering the final year of his deal, would commit to first-class cricket this season, but he has decided the best path for his career is to focus on the shorter formats. Had Notts refused to accept his request and not extended his contract then another county would undoubtedly have signed him just to play white ball cricket.

Clearly Hales' decision wasn't made for the good of the team, leaving the county up that proverbial creek without his particular paddle but his team mates have rallied to his support, as you would expect:

Skipper: I fully appreciate Alex Hales' decision to play white ball cricket. He has 100% made it for the right reasons and I hope our fans understand that he has made the decision for the best interest of not only himself but the team. Can’t wait to see him for The Outlaws.

RW: All the best to Alex Hales. Not an easy decision and well done to him. Less mess in the changeroom to worry about now.

Hales' announcement follows his fellow England ODI player, Adil Rashid who agreed with Yorkshire that he wouldn't play red ball cricket in 2018.

Hales' decision has been supposedly made for all the right reasons, reasons which I haven't seen in print anywhere today.

We are left to speculate about him missing out on lucrative IPL contracts and if this is connected or not. Not that that helps Notts out of their new predicament, finding a test quality number 3/4/5 batsman to go with the other a test quality number 3/4/5 batsman (Lumby) and the other test quality number 3/4/5 batsman (Pujara) that they appear to have done little about since September. Have the management replaced BT or JT either, no!

Troubling times for Mr Newell, who has to face the membership next week. Let's hope he's got some pending good news because on and off the field so far in 2018 it's all been dire so far.

Lizzy Ammon writes in the Times (21/02/18)

Alex Hales has become the second England player to step away from red-ball cricket by signing a two-year, limited-overs-only contract with Nottinghamshire, prompting fears among counties that others will do the same.

Hales, who is a regular in England’s white-ball sides but has not played Test cricket since August 2016, follows Adil Rashid, who announced last week that he would only play limited-overs cricket for Yorkshire.

The Times understands that Hales mooted the idea to Nottinghamshire towards the end of last season. The county are understood to be content with Hales’s decision, unlike Yorkshire who expressed disappointment with regard to Rashid.

Other counties, however, have said that they fear more players will follow suit ahead of the ECB’s new T20 tournament in 2020.

One county executive told The Times: “We are seeing players having more power and more options than ever before, and we will certainly see many more players opting to go down this route.

“It means we as counties will have to look carefully at our squad sizes and our budgets because if players are going to opt for only limited-overs cricket, we will have to have bigger squads to ensure we remain competitive in the County Championship. However, white ball-only contracts will be smaller in value meaning we may have some room in the budget for either red-ball specialists or to give additional contracts to academy players.”

One other executive said counties were proactively considering offering white ball or red ball-only contracts, particularly from 2020 when the schedule will change to accommodate the new eight-team competition.

Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, said of Hales’s decision: “Alex is entitled to make himself available for whatever format he wants to play and we respect his decision. He’s an outstanding white-ball player and we look forward to him helping us win more trophies in those formats.”

Nottinghamshire won both white-ball trophies in 2017 with Hales scoring 434 runs in the Royal London One-Day Cup at an average of 72.33, including a score of 187 not out in the final — one of the finest one-day innings ever played in domestic cricket’s showpiece match.

Following England’s one-day series against New Zealand, Hales will join up with Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League, which runs until March 25. He is without an IPL contract, and England’s domestic 50-over tournament does not start until May 17.

  1. I was so looking forward to seeing him putting up the runs for Notts in the early season and challenging to get back into the England test team. Very worried about the top of Notts order now.

  2. Sad that the people running the game & now the players are turning their backs on County cricket, Test cricket already on the decline....

  3. Don’t blame Hales, it’s the way the game is heading, a lot of people when offered more money for a lot less work would do the same. Expect more to follow up and down the country.

    1. I thought it was a team game and Notts's success was based on a strong team ethic. Opting out of the grind only to show up as the prodigal returning son to grab the glory isn't much of a team thing!

  4. So if AH is only playing white ball cricket. Does that mean he gets less pay?... Somehow I doubt it, As Notts have probably found out in their negotiations with AH and undoubtedly his agent its very much the player who holds the whip hand...

Now comes the difficult part filling the gap. Good luck with that Mick you'll need it.

    1. If his new contract is like Rashid's at revised one at Yorkshire then he take a substantial pay drop!

    2. I am afraid it is another nail in the coffin for the longevity of test and county cricket, and as previous contributors have stated, this is symptomatic, of the way the game is heading.

It is also likely to put a considerable financial strain on counties having to pay more for less.

I suspect Hales ,unlike Rashid, will be on a similar remuneration package to his previous deal.

Notts will need to go down the Kolpack route to strengthen batting and bowling,if they are to compete successfully in the forthcoming season.

  5. Do you think the club will allow me to renegotiate my membership to just red ball cricket...

    1. A good question, which I put to Notts by traditional letter and e'mail, for which I got a confirmation of it being opened. No reply from Notts, but no such option is mentioned anywhere on membership forms. Leicestershire CCC do offer this, and it includes all CC matches at Trent Bridge too

  6. The decisions of @alexhales1 and Rash recently are brave and just the tip of the iceberg. Many more will follow them in the next few years. Red ball cricket is an endangered species whether we like it or not. And those who berate them are the reason for it.

    3. No Harry - the ECB is the reason for the 'dumbing down' of Red Ball cricket - it represents the purest form of the Game (to those of us who understand cricket) with all of its twists and turns - what other sport can produce a dramatic outcome after 4 or 5 days? The loss of Red Ball cricket would be the loss of something quintessentially british and good.

  7. So basically Hales English season runs from May 17 & could finish on August 17 that’s 92 days In any language that’s completely crazy!!!

  8. It cannot be underestimated what a disgusting decision this is, if he had an ipl contract fair enough but notts desperate for him to play this season then toss it off if he gets an ipl contract next time fine, but this and the timing is insulting to fans, players and coaches

  9. The comment from Harry Gurney about a "brave" decision being made by Hales is not the word I would have used.

    Selfish -yes.

But hey, Hales is in a strong bargaining position where cricketers of his ilke, can command big bucks for less cricket.

Cricketers do play too much cricket ,resulting in mental and physical fatigue.

Poor old Harry himself had to play in 3 formats last season,so maybe he should hang up his boots in red ball cricket,as well.

It is the counties who pay the wages for these gentleman who are being short changed and left in the lurch, but red ball cricket is without doubt, on borrowed time.

  10. I hate the term "red ball cricket". It is First Class Cricket. There seems to be a gap opening up between admin and players on one side, and the paying public on the other. This is dangerous for cricket in all formats, particularly as the so called "new audience" for franchise T20 may not exist. Do all players really want First Class Cricket, including Test Cricket to die ?

    2. Well it's not working out very well is it, sadly? You need to resume 4-day cricket and also perhaps consider a move of Club as many Notts Members are deeply unhappy with you. We look for commitment and positive role models.

  14. They say it's good for Notts because they (those that play in the global T20 leagues)bring back new skills to share with our Notts boys. What skill is AH likely to bring back - fielding without having your hands in your pocket, daydreaming?

  15. Another" brave decision " by A Hales LOL

The modern day mercanary-(sorry cricketer) only has an allegance to his pay packet.-can you blame him?

I read the other day that Mr Chumly Warner who is replacing ,in the IPL, has a property empire now worth nearly 7 million, so despite being a cheating Aussie, financially, it ain't done him any harm.Might help to pay for his forthcoming personality transplant.

Might get to see Alex in one or two T20 games,if we are very lucky.

  16. Alex Hales will only play white ball cricket for Notts... except when IPL lures him with more money
    All about priorities I guess..
I hope he performs when he wears the famous Green & Gold.

  17. And yet another 'Hales Fails' in Sri Lanka - how does he qualify to be picked to play for England? - the odd brilliant Innings is no compensation for the many poor ones. He has shown a lack of commitment to Notts and to me it seems that chasing the 'big bucks' is his priority - I hope that I am wrong and that he will seek to rediscover his much more consistent form of a few Seasons ago - in the 4-day format especially.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Consistently generally comes from playing on a regular basis,How Hales planned to achieve that given the fixtures last season is puzzling to say the least,Notts had four championship matches too finish the season, Not much sign there of any one day cricket he needed to get into some sort of form for the Sri Lanka tour!

Seems to me that AH got it wrong and some misplaced pride prevented him asking Notts if he could play and get some much needed practise.

Maybe next season will bring a change of attitude .... Although somehow I doubt it..

Firstly, in fairness to Baz(anyone know why?), prior to this season he has been very good, at times bordering on brilliant for us both in red&white ball formats. Also, at the time he made his decision, his stock in 50over was high. He had won a Lords final for us and beaten Robin Smith's long standing highest one day score for England. In a way I could understand his decision, albeit didn't particularly agree with it or like it. Would he have made the decision NOW? His stock has fallen, he is now first reserve batsman and as Zanga rightly states, clearly is not getting enough games to play his way into form. Is there any chance he may reverse his decision - or is there more chance of Leicester winning the PL?

    1. He's been badly advised as it's played out for him 2018 so far. The contract has proved to be the start of things to come alas; others have followed already along that road, GG White and Max Waller to name 2 of the top of my head.

Baz - my assumption was Nottingham slang for "bastard" / "baz-turd", but meant affectionately of course

    1. Notts could have easily insisted that he honour his Contract but they chose to allow him to have what he wanted - I just hope that they adjusted his remuneration accordingly. Personally I think that Notts are better off without him - they need players who are fully committed to the Club. Unlike Kevin Peterson Alex Hales lacks the brilliance of an all-round International player.

  21. In answer to that question................certainly yes. The limited opportunities do mean as "stoney" states above, that each time he does appear the expectations are even greater and it becomes increasingly more difficult to hold down a place. Rustiness is not so easy to cast off.

I too fear he has been badly advised and will be restricted to the global T20 circus before long.

A special talent that probably won't achieve full potential.

    I hope I'm wrong.

  22. To me the over-riding issue is one of personal financial reward v the 'historical' ethos of cricket. It is a short career and few achieve the high status of the likes of Alex - would you or I do the same in his shoes? - a difficult question. There are those who go on to make a lifetime 'career' by moving into commentating / International umpiring / management but many fall by the wayside. Cricket can be a cruel game - as seen by how few Academy / 2nd Team players go on to a sustained First Team / Test Match career. I guess many of us who are just Supporters and 'older' hark back to a more 'golden age' of the game - when money was a lesser element (many had second jobs in the Winter months) and it was more of a genuine sport without all of the modern financial pressures. We live in a different world now!

  23. So...yet another 'Hales Fails' performance against Sri Lanka - in all fairness he must now be dropped by England, he is a liability. Those advising him need to get their heads together and work with Alex to get him back on track because at the present time he is not performing well and alienating many supporters.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Rumours circulating that good ol Bazzer, is renegotiating his white ball contract to only play T20? And if this doesn't work out he's got the option of only playing the new t10, or, perhaps in a few years even a t5 competition? But fear not, I'm sure if we are down to the bare bones and struggling he will be only too happy to help Notts out?

    ReplyDelete
  25. OK - you've been waiting for it haven't you!!!??? ANOTHER 'Hales Fails' - this is getting embarrassing. SURELY he must be dropped by England and sent home to either be 're-programmed' or issued with his P45 by Notts. He is a liability to both Notts and England - and maybe even to cricket as a whole. Who are his professional Advisers? Who is his Agent? We need some answers as to what has gone wrong with him - and I don't hold him wholly personally responsible. Notts happily release the likes of Brett Hutton, Graham White, Billy Root, Ricki Wessells ALL, it could be argued, who were far more consistent, if less 'flambouyant' than Alex. Answers please Notts.

  26. The 'Circus' seems to be coming together with more new Acts all the time - I just wondered who the Circus Master is? The Acts are really good - Hales failing (just like the circus clown) ; Brendan falling asleep in appropriate places and can we bring 'Swanny' back to recreate his search for the lost Kitten under the floorboards? I'm sure Readers will be able to suggest even more exciting Acts for the Circus - can we please ask Notts to book Trent Bridge for at least a week so that everyone has the chance to see them all?
