Hampshire Specsavers D1 at Newclose, Newport IOW Loss

Day 4

NOTTS TUMBLE TO ANOTHER SHAMBOLIC DEFEAT

Notts failed to put up much of a fight in Newport; at 1507 today falling to a massive 244 run defeat.

As you would expect at a club ground the wicket deteriorated on the last day, with the ball keeping low from the Pavilion End, but Notts cannot really complain as they elected to insert Hampshire on the first morning. The poor batting was summed up by Mr Extras being second top scorer on 31. Only Nash (60) and Fletcher (25 not out) showed any real prolonged resistance, as just as in the first innings Barker, Abbott and Edwards shared three wickets apiece.

In the fifth over of the morning Barker (Pavilion End) had night watchman Matt Carter leg before for 23. The third wicket added 53 runs. Clarke lasted 20 balls for his duck before edging Abbott to Alsop, 78 for 4. Libby was tested incessantly by Edwards by short leg side balls, he finally got his man 13 minutes before lunch as Libby (17) prodded him to short leg, 122 for five. Notts added a further nine runs before taking lunch with the obdurate Nash on 60 and Mullaney on 0.

Unpredictable bounce

The last five wickets went in 87 minutes after lunch. Kyle Abbott returned straight after lunch and with his sixth ball had Nash leg before to one that kept low, 132 for six. The bounce was getting more and more unpredictable from the Pavilion End, Moores lbw Abbott 5 (144 for 7) and Mullaney bowled Barker 12 (151 for eight) were both dismissed to balls that kept low. Edwards replaced Barker and he bagged Broad (9) caught at first slip by Rahane. Crane picked up the last wicket as Ball (0) skied the ball into the covers where Donald took the catch. Notts 194 all out.

The shambles, unfortunately continues as a lot of irate Notts supporters were let down once more by a side that is not the sum of its component parts. Hopefully James Pattinson makes the final eleven in the 48 pointer at Birmingham in 11 days time. MAG
Day 3

RAHANE AND NORTHEAST TAKE GAME AWAY

leaving Notts a mountain to climb

Notts woeful championship form continued in the sunny Isle of Wight today, chasing a nominal 439 to win they struggled to 42 to two with both openers gone. The pitch is playing easier than at any time during the match but given the current fragility of Notts batting it would take a brave man to predict anything but another heavy championship defeat. Notts were buoyed by an early wicket this morning but never looked like breaking a third wicket partnership of 257 between Rahane and Northeast who both made centuries. Notts looked like they were going through the motions in the field long before the partnership was finally broken. Hampshire raced to 367 for five declared leaving Notts 15 overs to survive, Duckett and Slater disappointedly fell in the first nine overs as once again the top order failed to deliver.

Hampshire took the game away from Notts in the morning session in front of crowd of around 800, the only good news was relegation rivals Warwickshire being defeated by 49 runs at Taunton. Notts took a wicket off the twelfth ball as Oliver Soames edged Broad to Moores, 9 for two. This proved to be false dawn as Hampshire pair Rahane (61no) and Northeast (54no) made untroubled progress as a Notts attack which rotated by skipper Steven Mullaney never looked like making incisions. Hampshire 121 for 2 after 37 overs at lunch.

Dropped
Rahane and Northeast carried on grinding the runs out, as the sound from the Notts fielders now appeared to be on a mute. In the 56th over Notts finally generated a chance as Northeast (81) edged Ball to Carter at slip who grassed an easy chance. At 1530 Rahane got to a ton on his debut with a leg side off Carter. Next over, a leg side two for Northeast off Fletcher brought up his 100. Libby came on for two overs of flighted filth which went for 20. In the final over before tea, Rahane was bowled by Carter for 119. The third wicket had added 257 in 60 overs. Hampshire 266 for 3 at tea off 69.3 overs, Sam Northeast 130 not out.

Difficult chance, dropped

In the second over after tea, Mullaney bowling from the Pavilion End picked up Northeast who skied to Broad to mid on, 272 for 4. In his next over Mullaney bowled Donald to a ball that kept low, 279 for 5. Alsop when on 30 was dropped at long on by Ball off Carter, a difficult chance. Alsop (51) and Holland (39) thrashed 88 in the last 11 overs until the declaration came at 1704 with Hampshire 367 for 5 off 85 overs.

Notts had 15 overs to negotiate. Ben Duckett lasted six balls until falling leg before to left armer Barker (Pavilion End) without troubling the scorers, 6 for one.

Reciprocating drop

Nash had a life on one when he was dropped by keeper Alsop diving to his right off Abbott. Edwards came on for ninth over from the Blackwater End and removed Slater (12) with his first ball, Alsop taking a regulation catch, 22 for two. Night watchman Carter and Nash lasted the final 41 balls.

Let's hope that Notts at least show some fight tomorrow to give the large away contingent who spent a fortune to get here some cheer. MAG

Day 2

CAPTAIN KNUCKLES-DOWN WITH FIGHTING TON

On a day when 15 wickets fell, Hampshire lead by 74 runs with 9 second innings wickets standing. In warm sunshine in front of crowd of around 1,500; Notts took the final four wickets this morning in 7.3 overs with Luke Fletcher being the most successful bowler with 4 for 79.

Customary Tale

Notts got off to their customary poor start losing their first five wickets for 72, Duckett and Nash being culpable to their own dismissals as Abbott ran amok. Mullaney and Moores added 79 in 24 overs for the sixth wicket but Moores then tickled Edwards down the leg side as Notts lost another three wickets in 15 balls. Mullaney rode his luck by being dropped three times but played very well to score 102 (173 balls, 13 x 4, 2 x 6) and added invaluable 80 for the ninth wicket with Matt Carter, before the last two wickets fell in three balls as Notts were all out for 239 all out. Three wickets apiece for Edwards, Abbott and Barker. With six overs to bat Hampshire lost Weatherley. A target of 250 plus will prove very challenging for Notts.

Bomber Commands

Broad (Blackwater End) and Fletcher (Pavilion End) opened the bowling.Fletcher picked up two wickets in three balls in the 100th over. Firstly Holland (27) edged to Moores and then Barker was caught at second slip by Carter for a duck, 295 for eight. Holland had added exactly 50 with Donald. In the 103rd over Broad dismissed Donald for 45 as Moores took his third catch of the innings, 305 for nine. Fletcher picked up fourth wicket (for 79) when Edwards (1) drove him to Clarke at mid off, 310 all out. Abbott 6 not out.

Top order slump
Abbott (Blackwater) and Edwards opened the bowling and in the eighth over Duckett was bowled through the gate for 19 by Barker in his first over having replaced Edwards. Five balls later, Slater (9) edged Abbott to keeper Alsop for nine, 28 for two. Clarke and Nash survived to lunch as the last over before the interval was bowled by leg spinner Mason Crane who had replaced Liam Dawson due to his England call up. Notts 55 for two after 18 overs with Clarke on 20 and Nash on 6.

Poor for the digestion
Notts lost six wickets in the middle session. Ten minutes after a lunch a daft shot from Nash (10) saw him caught at mid on by Northeast off Abbott, 61 for three. In his next over Abbott picked up his third wicket as Clarke was bowled for 29, 72 for four. Libby lasted 11 balls before falling leg before to Barker for 4, 72 for five.

Anchors Dropped, Anchors Away!

Mullaney and Moores dropped anchor, the 50 partnership being achieved via a no ball off Crane. Mullaney was dropped on 25 next over by Weatherley diving to his right at second slip off Abbott. The following over Moores hit Crane for four and six over mid wicket, the latter the first six in a first class fixture on the ground and the first on the Isle of Wight since at least 1962 in a championship fixture The sixth wicket partnership added 79 before Moores gave his wicket away being caught down the leg side by Tom Alsop off Fidel Edwards for 34. Fletcher lasted six balls before falling plumb leg before for 2, 156 for seven. Broad (1) versus Edwards was always going to be no contest, with the left hander lasting four balls before being bowled, 159 for eight. Another seven were added as Notts limped to tea on 166 for 8 with Mullaney on 43 and Carter on 4, a driven boundary that avoided the follow on.

Dropped again

Mullaney was dropped by Donald at mid wicket off Edwards, an easy chance. Next ball he reached his 50. Mullaney hit Crane for a six over mid wicket and then took Abbott for nine off the next over. There were huge cheers in the following over as a no ball from Crane saw Notts to a rare batting bonus point.

A four through the covers by Mullaney saw the 50 partnership in 16 overs. Mullaney benefited from another straight forward drop as keeper Alsop dropped him off Holland when on 80. Mullaney got to his ton with a six over square leg off Crane. Edwards finally broke the partnership as Carter was leg before for 14, the ninth wicket had added 80 runs. Mullaney fell two balls later, top edging Holland who took the return catch, Mullaney 102 an excellent innings, with the captain placing the ball extremely well! Notts 339 all out.

Hampshire had to bat for six overs and in the penultimate over Fletcher had Weatherley leg before for 2, 3 for one. Soames and Rahane battened down the hatches Hampshire 3 for 1 after 6 overs. MAG
Day 1

HAMPSHIRE EDGE GRAFTING  DAY ON THE HOLIDAY ISLE

Hampshire shaded the first day at the picturesque Newclose Ground closing on 288 for 6 after Notts inserted Hampshire after an uncontested toss. A crowd of around 1,000 attended the inaugural Hampshire fixture on a ground which has an Arundel feel set in rolling hillsides two miles to the south of Newport. The pitch did not encourage stroke play and with the vast outfield the scoring rate was kept to three an over despite only six wickets falling. Jake Ball after being rested at Chelmsford, bowled well and deserved more than his 2 for 57. Skipper Steven Mullaney bowled 24 overs two for 42, including an uninterrupted 18 over spell

Notts fielding was mixed with four catches being dropped and 42 extras conceded including 12 byes and 15 leg byes.

Libby came in for Samit Patel and Ball returned for Chappell. Hampshire made an untroubled progress against opening pair Fletcher and Broad, Ball replaced Broad after a 3 over spell.

Nash double

Weatherley was dropped off successive balls in the gulley on 19 and 21 by Nash off Fletcher. Broad switched ends and Mullaney came on with his dibbly dobblers but despite some playing and missing, Notts went wicketless in the first session, Hampshire 88 for 0 off 30 overs with Joe Weatherley on 45 and Olli Soames 24.

Notts finally took a wicket in the 13th over after lunch when Ball got Weatherley (66 - 134 balls, 5 x 4) to edge to Moores, 112 for 1.

Miss Libby

Soames was dropped on 26 by Libby at backward point off Mullaney, a simple chance. In the same over, Rahane survived a very confident leg before shout when yet to score. Rahane though only made 10 falling to fine catch by Nash diving to his left in the gully off Stuart Broad, 134 for two. Mullaney then finally took himself off after a marathon 18 over spell from the Pavilion End where he conceded 22 runs. Spin o'clock arrived with three overs left until tea as Matt Carter finally had a twirl. At the interval Hampshire were 161 for 2 off 64 overs Soames 44 and Northeast 9.

Off the second ball after tea after Soames soporific innings finally ended when he edged Ball to Carter at second innings. Soames 44 off 190 deliveries with four boundaries. Soames who attended Loughborough University represented Plumtree from 2016 to 2018 making 66 first team appearances.

Moores lax fielding

Sam Northeast was dropped on 10 by keeper Moores off Ball's next over, an easy chance. Mullaney returned and in his second over had Northeast leg before for 33, 193 for four. Alsop was the fifth wicket to fall well caught down down the leg side by Moores off Mullaney on 9. The new ball was taken with the home side 277 for 5 off 81.2 overs. With the third over with the new ball Fletcher removed Dawson's off stump for 25, 245 for six. Aneurin Donald (35no) and Ian Holland (24no) added a further 43 in remaining 12 overs as stumps were drawn at 1825. The away following of around 200 spectators will hope Notts take the remaining four wickets quickly in the morning. MAG
Ajinkya Rahane is due to debut for Hampshire, but Notts talk will be about the likely signing of Ravi Ashwin, another cricketing bogey man after his Mankad dismissal of golden child Jos Buttler.

Preview

Without a win since last June and now 7 defeats in the last 10 matches; Notts ride the ferry across The Solent to take on the Hampshire Kolpaks.

Director of Cricket Newell tells the The Post that he has faith in our batsmen to come good in the Championship and that the new blood will have no problem making the step-up to Division 1, although it is a big step-up; Slater, Duckett and Clarke have all played most of their cricket in Division 2. Ben Slater has been the one shining light, though Joe Clarke did impress in the first game on 2019. Duckett is not adjusting well so far; so fingers-crossed for the Holiday Isle...

The Post article focusses on the batting having to come good but does touch on Luke Fletcher's almighty effort with the ball. carrying the attack so far this season. In reality Fletch is perhaps due a rest to avoid a repeat premature burn-out (that happened in 2018) but options are limited with the sick bay having Coughlin and Pattinson in the queue possibly with Zak Chappel,l but there's a news blackout on that injury. Harry Gurney is perhaps now doing the accounts for his pubs whilst resting his injury and practicing counting down from twenty-four.

The Post suggests that Jake Ball will return at the expense of Zak Chappell, well he would if Zak was injured.

Stuart Broad needs to start looking like the player we all know he is; he's currently not producing the goods expected of him or needed from him by Notts.

The Notts squad has been announced as:

Ben Slater
Ben Duckett
Chris Nash
Joe Clarke
Steven Mullaney
Samit Patel
Tom Moores
Stuart Broad
Luke Fletcher
Matt Carter
Jake Ball
Jake Libby
Jack Blatherwick
Zak Chappell

  1. I suppose on the plus side Warwickshire might give Notts some company down at the bottom of the table, Based on performances so far this season neither of those two clubs look capable of worrying the likes of Somerset or Surrey..
You would probably add Hampshire to that list if their last match is an indication of their present form...

Cricket though is a game that regularly produces surprises ,Maybe the sea air might inspire Notts to play like the team on paper should play... Here's hoping.

Yes, Broady really needs to produce this game. A bowler of his test quality really shouldn't look average on the county treadmill surely? The new restaraunt may have been named after Ben Ducketts batting average this season but I think he's a brilliant player and convinced he'll unleash something spectacular very soon. What a bounus it will be if Patto is passed fit to play this game on foreign soil. Going Derby v Glam tmrw(yes I know at a loose end and all of that)

Does the DOC have pre rehearsed statements to the press...because he has been using this same one for years...they never do come good Mick, and you do nothing to change things...please please resign Mick, we need a DOC and coaches who have new and positive ideas and you have had far too many opportunities....and hope all going to IOW have a good time, the weather stays fine and the batsmen do put in a shift..!

Some would agree with earlier comments reg.the DoC but who would resign on the sort of salary that role pays? So, theres red ball, white ball.....and now a new contract. Its an overseas one where the player doesnt actually play. How many championship games will Patto actually play? 1, 2 or none? We got away with it two years ago, but what were the chances of being lucky again, very slim I would suggest. Once CA wanted him to rest the first two we should have got somebody else or was naive Mick happy to go along with it?Feel sorry for Patto but having your main matchwinning bowler unavailable for a variety of reasons is no good to Notts. Drama at the Pattonair today, one of the floodlights commanding the same wattage as a hand torch broke down

  6. Reports on the net that Notts have signed Ravi Ashwin for 6 CC matches subject to clearance from the Indian board

Seems their board want players not involved in the world cup to be playing in preparation for the world test championships.

  7. Yes Zanga the New Indian Express says:

NEW DELHI: Senior India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will be tuning up for the inaugural World Test Championship against West Indies by playing in English County for Nottinghamshire.

"Yes, Ashwin will be playing for the Notts this season. The CoA had already made it clear that any centrally contracted cricketer will have automatic rights to play County cricket if that player gets an offer.

"Ashwin's deal is almost final and only the CEO needs to sign his NoC," a senior BCCI functionary privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

After Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane inked a deal with Hampshire, it is the turn of Ashwin to play six division 1 County games for the Nottinghamshire side that also has England's premier fast bowler Stuart Broad in their ranks.

This will be Ashwin's second stint in English County, having played four games for Worcestershire during the 2017 season.

It was a fruitful season back then for the 32-year-old, who got 20 scalps in four games and also scored 214 runs.

The BCCI has been in touch with the various county sides as they want their top long form specialists to play county cricket every season during June and July.

As of now, Rahane, Ashwin and Cheteshwar Pujara (with Yorkshire on three-year contract) are certain to play the county games.

Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma may also feature in a few games if things fall in place.

  8. So will India be paying his travel & accommodation costs + wages? You bet not. If this fails the DoC must go.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Ashwin does have a decent record in the CC
With Worcestershire so I guess that's a plus , He certainly would not fall into the same category as another late replacement, A certain J Bird.

Some will say that because of the Buttler incident he should not be allowed to play for Notts, Seems to be an over reaction if that's the case, Whilst I agree its not something I particularly like it's not illegal, So really there is no case to answer.

What I will enjoy ... if he plays for us .... will be the sight of opposition batsmen doing what we have done for so long, IE,struggling against quality spin.

Let's be honest here given our form so far this season we need help asap , Ashwin love or hate hate him would certainly offer what we need...

  10. No faith in Samit then Michael....

Notts website: Patel’s absence ended a streak of 95 consecutive county championship appearances, stretching back to the start of the 2013 season.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Not surprised that Samit was jettisoned, but replacing with Libby, weakens the side even more.

When is Chris Gibson in the seconds going to be given a chance.

4 dropped catches including one from Libby.

Considering Notts championship form,I would suggest that Hampshire are in a better position after day one.

Let us hope we can get some early wickets, then bat all day tomorrow .

  14. Not enough football perhaps!!! Notts are certainly not the strong and reliable fielding Side that they used to be. Perhaps the sea air has gone to their heads! Something again appears to be seriously wrong - why was Samit dropped after 95 appearances on the trot? - it seems that there is something going wrong in the Changing Room. I genuinely believe that we now need almost a complete clear out from the very top managerially downwards and a whole new ethos and culture creating that Notts Members can once again be proud of.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Good grief. We're 72 for 5... we do indeed need a complete clear out of the club management, and a whole new ethos. Long term development of our own players rather than the short term fixes of overseas and Kolpak players.

At least the team have shown some fighting spirit in this game both with the ball and for once not crumbling with the bat when 5 down for under 100. We are still second favourites though unless we can bowl Hampshire out for 150 or less. I applaud the decision to drop Samit as even though it does appear to weaken the side he has needed a clear message for some time that his appalling red ball form for an extended period has repercussions.

Apart from being Dads Army in the field with our lack of athleticism, how on earth for the SECOND year running have we ended up with the tail starting at no8. In the past have we not had The General and Ealham batting in this position? I know the Tin-Man is unfortunately crocked again but these two issues are against what a PM side stand for(or used to anyway). Credit to the Bulwell Bomber though he's practically carrying the attack at times this season. Regarding Samit, it could have been Duckett in theory as both have been in poor form, albeit Samit had a shocker back in Div One again last season. Is he now under pressure for his place in the red ball side for the first time in years but surely a bit of healthy competition for the shirt is what is needed but is difficult with such a small squad of 1st team batters. Regarding Gibson, I guess you never quite know until they get a chance but going straight from the stiffs on Lady Bay to facing a decent attack against Kolpakshire is quite a challenge. Libby as a senior pro. was always going to get the nod ahead of him, rightly or wrongly.

    ReplyDelete
  20. One of the problems Notts face ( and there are a few) is their choice to go with a small squad, That's fine when everything is running smoothly, Trouble is with Notts on their current run of CC form there is little room for manoeuvre.

Samit was dropped for this match with Jake Libby being bought in which just about exhausts the changes available.

I'm sure Notts will point to the absence of Coughlin and Chappell, which you would have to say is unfortunate, Trouble is it's a self inflicted piece of misfortune Neither player seems able to complete a full season for their club.

So please Notts when you sign more players have a look at their sick records first, That way we might sign more players similar to Ben Slater than the fragile pair we have now

  21. Lunch on day 3 and almost a 200 lead for Hampshire with only 2 wickets down - not looking good is it!!!??? Let's face it, we're just not good enough for Division 1. I would get rid of Libby; Ball; Broad, Wood; and the Divion 2 'imports' and bring back Hutton and Billy Root. I think Moores is still a 'work in progress' and remain unconvinced that he will make the grade. Luke Fletcher perhaps has just this Season and perhaps next left but he is performing heroically and an example to most of the others. Again, just what is wrong? Is it lack of playing talent or poor senior management? Who is Mick Newell accountable to at the end of the day - and whoever it is what targets are being set for him? What is the Fitness and Conditioning Coach doing to earn their money? Is Andy Pick really the role model that bowlers need fitness-wise? Where has the Academy gone? But never mind, the money keeps rolling in so does any of the above matter at all really?

    1. In the championship, it is a continuation of last season, despite all the signings.

Newell' s stewardship , is at the heart of the problem.

Years of neglect of the academy, and a high percentage of poor signings, yet he is still at the club, as his girl friend is running the job.

Hutton wanted to leave as did Milnes, but their replacements have been stuck in the treatment room.
Like you say, Notts are in the wrong division, and cannot compete with the Kolpak's.

They lack two quality bowlers and diciplined batsman who can occupy the crease.

No easy fix at the moment.

The game at Edgbaston in a couple of weeks will be a yardstick, for which team is likely to be relegated .

In sport you often become a better player when you are not in the side. Remember all the clammer to get Matt Carter in the side? Well, look at at the semi final, 2 overs and blasted out of the attack never to return and then his figures yesterday. He is relatively young admittedly but is this really someone who went on an England Lions tour last winter. The DoC cannot be blamed on this occasion. Most counties who could have afforded them would have signed Duckett and Clarke. They are just out of form at the minute, although personally if Gnasher and Libby play I would play these in the top 3 and drop Duckett down the order

    ReplyDelete
  31. In cricket unlike other sports at least when batting you rarely have a chance to recover from a mistake and so confidence is the absolute key issue in managing the squad. I believe that the Captain's mission is to inspire confidence by his actions and words. Mull's century of course set a great example but I think that his negative decision to avoid batting first on a club strip was a prediction of failure.Sadly it seems that the profecy will prove true today. Many of us have asked for a shake up sadly I think that the captaincy must be part of that and soon.

Not many options though on that front so would it be Gnasher or do we bring someone else in from outside. Mull has certainly presided over some shocking team performances. Let's all hope the lads produce a display and salvage a draw. I know I keep banging on about it but to have no overseas for the first four games is a shocking decision by the hierarchy(albeit for a variety of reasons)

    1. An interesting suggestion, one that I wouldn't instantly dismiss... good call "Pack man"

      Delete
  33. Yes it's true we could have opted for a toss to take place and hopefully Mull would have made the right call.

Trouble is our batters are at the moment woefully out of form, Mull perhaps thought let's give them a bat and see how this unknown wicket plays

Restricting them to just over the 300 mark must have seemed a job well done.

Then it was our turn to bat and we very quickly saw what Mull was afraid of,Wickets tumbled and it was only the century by the captain that saved having to follow on (Even that century was not without a large slice of good fortune)

Hampshire batted again and we very quickly saw that perhaps it's not only our batters who are out of form when our bowlers struggled against two quality batsmen ( Fletch excepted).

Let's face facts we were lucky to escape relegation last season, The way things are shaping we will need even more luck this season I doubt changing the captain would change that fact , After all a captain can only use what weapons he is provided with.

I would start by getting rid of the DoC, let's get someone in from outside of the club who can actually identify the problems our present leader consistently misses, ie a bowling coach who can actually coach. Then the new man could also look at whether the batters need outside help too

We have drifted for far too long , Action is needed now ...

Depressingly predictable with the margin of the defeat again of mammoth proportions. Please please Mr Moores no more platitudes in your post match interview. Most of the players are not red ball division one cricketers with major failings in all three disciplines. Mull needs to fall on his sword with Nash the obvious replacement. I agree that Nash and Libby have to bat in the top three with Duckett and Samit vying for the number five or six spot. If any suitable Kolpaks are about the DOC has to swallow his pride and get on the phone. Kent and Warwickshire have certainly given Surrey and Somerset sterner opposition than Notts have. Rolling over every week just cannot go on.

    1. Well said KGP, We have BIG problems which will only be sorted if we get change at the top, It might be too late for this season but the changes need to happen NOW !

Will the DoC look at possible Kolpaks? Perhaps the answer to that is will Ms Pursestrings let him.

    2. “It’s not the trip we would have wanted,” reflected the Head Coach.

“There’s no hiding place from it, we’ve been well beaten.

“If I’m honest I think we wanted to get stuck in and we did get stuck in but we were beaten by a better side.”

Notts were bowled out for 195 on the final day, with Chris Nash making 60. No-one else, apart from Steven Mullaney with his first innings hundred, passed 50 for the visitors.

“Batting has been a real issue for us all year,” said Moores. “The reality of it is, is that we are a new team. Whichever way you want to perm it we have got young players and they are still finding themselves but we have to find ourselves fast.

“That’s the reality of where we are at as a group, batting-wise. The first game (against Yorkshire) we played well, after that we haven’t batted well as a unit and that makes staying in and affecting a game very difficult.”

The Head Coach said it is all about the basics of the game.

“Keep it simple. Our game is about watching the ball and playing it. Sometimes it doesn’t always run for you.

“A couple of the lads will look back and say that it’s not quite happening for me. The key is to keep things simple and keep hungry, so that when you get your chance you can take it.

“I thought Steven Mullaney showed that. He had a couple of chances in the first innings but cashed in. We’ve got to keep doing that.”

Notts now have a short break before the next fixture, away against Warwickshire.

“We’ve got a massive game coming up in 10 days time,” he said.

“We can have a bit of a break and then come back ready to go.

“The positive you can take is that we have got a lot of cricket coming up in the next 6-7 weeks, so there will be plenty of opportunities there for people to put things right.”

  42. An overwhelming message that an overhaul of DOC and coaches is needed NOW,whether that be resignations or sackings, how can this strong message be conveyed to the committee.., I am unsure of the routeway so would appreciate suggestions, or maybe an acknowledgement from a committee member reading this site that he/she can take this forward

  43. There SHOULD be a Members Forum at the next Home Match at Trent Bridge.

You can also write to the Chairman, Mr Richard Tennant c/o Trent Bridge or email him via TB email.

I have absolutely no doubt that many of the hierarchy do read this Site but aren't brave enough to comment - they have to tow the corporate line.

  44. Thanks Philip, I will indeed write to Mr Tennant, I hope others do likewise, and I also hope that there will be a forum during the Essex game in June/July...but just maybe the DOC will put the club first and do the honourable thing within days

  45. I doubt it Baggers since the angle seems to be that we have a lot of new young players who will take a while to settle. We will be asked to be patient and,of course,to calm down. Despite that maybe the coaches are vulnerable since poor managers often blame their staff.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don't buy that Chris, on paper there is a good mix of experience and young England lions..! However they are all under performing and that's down to poor coaching and non existent leadership...I have been patient with this DOC for years, he has not added an ounce of value to this club and his time has long since been up, and I cannot keep calm when us members are paying his salary for no reward

Yes the new young players comment is an excuse as Joe Clarke and Ben Duckett and Ben Slater have played enough first team cricket and none of them are rookies plucked from the seconds. Kent batted out the day against Surrey losing just 7 wickets. Oh for Notts to show such application but the Hop County have two South Africans in their side and those boys always fight for the cause.

    1. They (Kent) didn't have to bat on a deteriorating club ground wicket however, but point taken. Notts yet again showed little, verging on zero appetite for a fight to save a game. The margins of defeat are embarrassing.

  49. One ex Notts player namely Kevin Pieterson, a legend in his own mind, had very little regard for Peter Moores and even less regard for Mick Newell.
How many managers/ coaches/psychiatrists etc do NOTTS need, all drawing fat salaries, with nothing to show for it.

Newell foolishly admitted during a members lunchtime meeting a couple of years ago, that when questioned about one of his many failed signings (Will Gidman ), that he hadn't actually seen him play, and had signed him, based on his stats, for Gloucestershire.

His title should be renamed to the "Director of Cluelessness. "

As for Peter Moores, I suggest that negotiations regarding a contract extension, should be consigned to the waste paper bin.

Cmon Mustafa, he's only being paid £160k a year acc. to reports (what do you expect for that paltry sum) but YES, I completely agree with you about all the backroom staff. Who was there to help Rice, Hadlee, Randall, Robinson, Broad, Hemmings, French and PLEASE don't anyone try to tell me the game is more difficult now as that's pure cobblers, you had to face a battery of Windies quicks in the late 70s/80s as a county player in those days

  51. I share everyone's frustration with the red ball performances this season and last but it is nothing new. I think over my 50 years supporting Notts they've often been seen as a soft touch and I believe an England bowler from another county may have said as such in his autobiography. Something is deeply wrong at TB.
I am however puzzled at the calls for 'Gnasher' to be made captain. In my opinion his performances when fit have in general mounded nicely into the Notts traditional flashy 30 and out routine. He is not worth his place in the side, never mind as a skipper. I also believe if he was seen as captaincy material he'd have got the gig at 2nd division Sussex at some point.

  52. We are now in serious danger of relegation - Peter Moores does appear to be an excellent Coach but does not seem to be able to motivate the Side - how much he is under the 'shadow' of Mick Newell I do not know. I was surprised at the original appointment of Andy Pick as the Bowling Coach and the loss of Paul Johnson - something 'political' went wrong. Notts should also have dealt far more firmly with the misbehaviour of certain players - especially Alex Hales and Joe Clarke - and, more historically dear old Brendan and his drunken antics. Some of us continue to believe in the inherent 'nobility' and fairness of the Game - a game that should represent and epitomise all that is good and wholesome in sport. Chasing the 'big bucks' always had its dangers - so Alex led the way in declining to play red ball cricket - Mr Newell should have shown him the exit door immediately - we don't want players with little or no commitment to Notts.- sadly, once the 'door' is open and Players realise that it is THEY who have the power the only way is downwards. What a mess we are in but where does accountability rest?

    1. Sadly once there's been the The Hundred auction in October; there might be a few more (80 odd) players opting for reduced workload contracts; if they're not going to make the grade as test players of the future, why bother with 3-4 days games stuck in hotels playing to handfuls of spectators when you can cash your cheque, bowl your 4 over stint or have the quick 30 ball smash it, about a 3 hours work, job done x 14-15 times max, then play a handful of pantomime "cricket" - The Hundred and earn big bucks.

  53. Sorry, the Head Coach's attitude is clearly wrong.

“We’ve got a massive game coming up in 10 days time,” he said.
“We can have a bit of a break and then come back ready to go."

Er no. What he ought to have said was............."After the abject and total failure of the last 3 games its 24 hour 7 day boot canp for the lot of you. You will be fit. You will be more athletic. You will learn resilience through improved technique and judgment. You will gel together more as a team and put together partnerships. As bowlers you will hunt in tandem. You will learn NOT to leak runs through unnecessary Extras"

To go nearly a year without a win in the CC is NOT ACCEPTABLE. FULL STOP.

bws C'mon Notts. Lively up yourselves.

We can only hope that's his 'public face' to the media and in the dressing room he read them the riot act after this latest disaster. I don't think anyone really 'wants' Gnasher as Captain but he's about the only alternative IF you decided that Mull needed it taking off him. It would be short term fix, obviously. Can't see it happening, with the DoC calling the shots still, we are always going to be a reactive and not a proactive club. Having said that get Patto(and keep him fit) and we will suddenly start to compete in games. Also, when Ashwin arrives, prep. day 3 pitches and just hope we can accumulate enough first innings runs?

  55. No - we should not 'doctor' the Pitches - there's already too much of that in cricket. Time that the ECB went back to 'grass roots' - excuse the pun! - and set out exactly how Pitches should be prepared. Cricket should be all about fairness, honesty and integrity - not slight of hand and 'smoke and mirrors.'

    ReplyDelete
  56. If my memory serves we prepared green pitches back in the day that Messrs Hadlee and Rice enjoyed. I've heard recent discussions about the ECB insisting on consistently dry beige strips that batsmen prefer. They don't seem to work for ours though!
