TROUBLE AT 'MULL

Only those at Edgbaston will know the truth for sure but is Stuart Broad's presence becoming counter-productive for struggling Notts?

Broady's a strong influential personality on the field and has already cost Notts a point in the Somerset game with his eternal overs accounting for the lethargic slow over rate, but it's his dictating to the captain and his overall petulance towards colleagues, opposition players and umpires that holds the deepest concerns. Perhaps Broady's behaviour is a symptom of his personal concerns about his own International future.

Stuart isn't an automatic choice for the Test XI anymore, especially overseas and in spite of the extended opportunities that he has been granted in 2019 by his masters, playing in most rounds of CC1, he is yet to look the World Class International that he supposedly still is.

Once Stuart loses his central contract, which is probably in the not too distant future, could Notts afford his contract, would Notts want want to afford him, would Broad want to continue in County Cricket anywhere? He could decide to reinvent himself, turn to T20 and furrow an extended lucrative career circumnavigating the globe on the World T20 Circus tour and even perhaps take in the Hundred too.

MAG's report from Edgbaston mentioned the "double teapot" pose and on Crinfo Steven Mullaney confessed that the team had been dealt a Code 1 violation and that he suspected individuals would/could be in line for additional sanctions following the frustrations over arduous passages of play.

Should the Notts Committee Step-in?

If Mullaney can't control Broad, should he lose the captaincy? Should the club fine Broad independently for bringing the club into disrepute through his actions and demeanour? Pattinson and Mullaney himself as well are also in the frame for personal sanctions too from the ECB, there being a lot of foul mouth stuff directed at the Bears' batsmen and low level dissent. The bad behaviour and poor sportsmanship is a direct result of the difficult times currently at Notts in 2019.

Continuing where I left-off, where I wasn't singling out Stuart Broad but it was where I had got to this morning before the paid work needed my attention :(

There's a lot that could be said; things aren't right at the club, that's plain for everyone to see and for the opposition to exploit, though those at the club will probably deny it.

 Change

The same reoccurring problems that we had in 2016, 2017 and 2018 are just as evident this season, playing personnel have come or gone but other individuals remain a constant throughout. To effect change you've got to want change and to want change you must have those at the top recognising the necessity to change. Currently I'm not seeing that.

A good team defence has been thrown-up around the club; PM has made his explanations clear and SM has backed his bosses and blamed poor on the field decisions by players for the club's predicament (blaming himself as you would expect from an honourable individual).

Other counties do other "stuff" better and I'm not talking just about fielding. The transition between formats and the Academy to First XI pathway are just two aspects where others appear to be better at it than Notts.

Are we too proud to observe, learn from and to copy where appropriate what others do well? Yes other counties have their own periodic issues but the perennial blight on almost every Notts season, in point has been the running out of steam mid August because we don't have enough players with experience to rotate leaving the ever present skeleton of a side knackered having played in all formats; this results in games where our points return is minimal; 2016 it confirmed our plight, 2017 we only scraped promotion after a flying start to the season and 2018 where Lancashire will still be scratching their heads to how we survived - again the flying start saved us, just.

Dire Defeatism

In 2019 we have been dire from the start, unable to adapt to the current toss rule, the new balls being used and the use of the heavy roller; all of which we were warned about in March and that the coaching staff had their concerns but who have, to date, been unable to get a game plan to counter these changes unlike some other counties have. It could be argued, that that defeatism (from before the first game started) has put those feelings of inevitability into the players' minds and has triggered this whole mess.

Confidence

Confidence is infectious they say, therefore the opposite must also be true. This dark cloud (looking from the outside) appears to enveloped most of the first eleven squad; why are so many batsmen under-achieving, out of nick and showing no consistency at all at the same time? As a Notts supporter through and through, it is painful to watch. No one is saying that the players are lacking effort, but they surely are lacking in confidence and mistakes are being made.

Lack of foresight?

When Notts signed the now struggling Joe Clarke, did they not know the degree of baggage he came with? The court case and the ECB further investigations into the matter, people were sacked at Worcester for pity's sake; the drip feeding of information about a player blacklist from the now squeaky clean England set-up which JC is said to be on - I just hope the club are supporting the player further than just backing him and picking him regardless in games. The same goes for Alex Hales and his self destructive behaviour; talk of him going away on holiday with certain team mates recently (mid-season) isn't great PR given the current climate (in both senses of the word).

Our predicament would be eased (hopefully), the club would say, if we had a fully firing Paul Coughlin and Zak Chappell and that the club can't be blamed for unfortunate absences, BUT when these players were signed PC had a reputation for being "unlucky" with injuries (and so it has proved, and we really need him on the park ASAP) and ZC was a perpetual "sick note" at Leicester playing something like 1 in 3 games only (he's got plenty of season left if he finds some pace he could turn it all around, I hope he does and hopefully before the Blast interrupts the season too). BUT you don't build your plans around such players - no foresight just wishful thinking.

"Hope for the Best but Plan for the Worst" - Jack Reacher

Contracts

There was some talk at Welbeck that Samit would be off the pastures new for 2020, that Luke Wood was Lancashire bound and that Tom Moores was after a white ball only deal.

Rats leaving a sinking ship or players legitimately seeking a lifeboat, you decide?

Just a few personal opinions/concerns

  1. Broad has, in recent years, contributed next to nothing in his handful of appearances. Just because he is available, doesn't mean he should be picked.

    1. A bang on assessment of Broad, that. His contribution in the odd games he's been allowed to play in the last few years has been bang avg. Arrogant.

  2. When do the Notts 'committee' ever step in..? They lack courage, leadership and decision making qualities, and they allow players and management to do exactly what they want...which on and off the pitch is very very little, should Mullers stay as Captain is debatable.,he got the job because there was no one better and it's been evident that he has no control or respect from the majority of his limited squad...But who else is there...?I doubt Broad will hang around at TB once England find no use for him anymore, which will solve this particular problem, but many more remain..!

  3. It's always easy to look good when you are winning, But as Notts are finding out when the going gets tough petulance inevitably shows through

It's easy to dish out fines and discipline players,The not so easy part is actually doing something about changing attitudes,

Perhaps the answer might be a change of captain, but who would you replace Mull with?

Take a look through the team and about the only player you could see ( and that on a short term basis) performing the job would be Gnasher Apart from Nash you can pretty much discount everyone else on grounds of age, ability to do the job and most importantly being sure of their place in the team.

Maybe the answer may well be in looking down the kolpak route , Offering the captaincy might be the inducement a quality player needs in order to give up international cricket.

But I am a realist, Chances are come the match against Kent ( a must win fixture if ever there was one ! ) it will be more of the same tired looking team,

Notts being Notts are only likely to react when the horse has bolted ,As they may well find out getting it back in the stable is no easy job!

  4. when I look at that long list of spineless performances, I think what a waste of time watching Notts.

No championship victories in 12 months, disgraceful, and no changes at the top.

As for the captain, cant really blame him. Realistically, who else could do the job any better, with the players at his disposal.

Compared to Anderson's performances for Lancashire ( albeit in division 2). Broad's stats have been abject in comparison. I am sure he still puts in 100 per cent in effort, but he now looks an average bowler and a number 11 bat.

If Notts want to stay in division one, they have to make extra signings additional to Ashwin, from somewhere, as the management seem reluctant to give opportunities to the likes of Patterson White, Gibson etc.

As for the Kent game, with the same old team, are we able to score enough runs and take 20 wickets, to win the match? Unlikely- but stranger things have happened.

  5. Reference the points made about Stuart Broad . For those on here who have better memories and access to accurate facts could someone answer this simple question ?
Which was the most recent County match in which Stuart put in a match winning performance with bat and ball ( or either). In other words a 4 day match that would not have been won without his effort . I know this is perhaps a matter of opinion but I would like to know what others think .
PS This question is not meant to be a detrimental one because I have been an admirer of Broads bowling ( and batting until the full hit in the face incident).
Its just that he does not seem to deliver the goods for Notts these days .

  6. I recall a match winning 5 for (maybe more wickets?) in second innings v wo rcestershire about 5 years ago...nothing since that I can recall and I attend all home games + a few away...if we were paying his wages this I guess would be under greater scrutiny..in the main he puts effort in but we don't get to see his England form

  7. The last time I saw him show any passion/effort was when he took the No8 shirt off Franks, seconds after he'd announced his retirement 🤣

  8. Yep. Imo Archer will take Broad's place. Stuart doesn't enjoy playing county cricket - it's obvious. Opposite of Jimmy. Don't think he's worth his spot in Notts team either. Angling for Sky commentary box. Sat next to Cook he can criticise. Feel sorry for Mulls on this one.

  9. “There’s no hiding from it,” said the 40-year-old. “We haven’t played the cricket we wanted. We have high expectations and when you don’t meet them you start looking for reasons why.

“At times we haven’t scored the runs we should have or bowled as well as we could have. We’ve also dropped catches, so when you throw it all together it’s not a good mix.

“It hasn’t been through lack of hard work and it hasn’t been through lack of desire to succeed.

“Sometimes these things avoid you but you have to stay patient. That can be difficult and challenging but we have to find a way to work through it.

“At times, the harder you look, the harder it is to find but hopefully some individuals can come through the next couple of weeks and feel better about themselves.”

    1. Talk about the blinding obvious
"We haven't scored enough runs, we haven't bowled well enough and also we have dropped catches "

What's happened to that star turn Chappel we signed from Leicester. Is he a relative of Lord Lucan.?

Sometimes you can put a lot of hard work in, practising your faults, and the coaching staff can become blinkered in their approach.

  10. Is this coach brainwashed to come out with such claptrap...'at times' should read every single game...be patient he says..for how damn long..? Maybe a way to work through it is to accept you are not up to the job and resign..? Come on Franksey you used to be an honest guy...but these statements make me think the shrinks have got to you ..!!!

  11. Thanks for the stats and comments .
It could be that Stuart Broad has a pretty limited shelf life if he is not up to the standard required by the "demanding" Notts bowling coaches . Bowling Partner ,Jimmy seems to like to play for his County whenever he can and still appears keen .
Has the 'fire gone out Stuart?
Or is old age gradually catching up ?
From what fans on here and elsewhere say it seems pretty obvious that Stuarts big performances have been reserved for when he is wearing an England shirt on the big stage

Stuart Broad has never been a penetrative bowler as he gets his wickets when he is on an unstoppable roll but these episodes are happening less and less particularly for Notts. Let's not just concentrate on him though as he has played in less than half of the games in our 12 months humiliating run. Only Notts would allow this run to continue without shaking up the coaching staff.

  13. We only have to look at Somerset to see what we need, Fast bowlers that bowl fast and if that does not work spinners that actually take wickets.

If you look at the Cider mans batting its hardly their strongest suite but of late they invariably get just enough runs to give their bowlers a chance to win the match.

It would be nice to think that Notts could live at this level, In fact if you look at the pre season guides to the new season Notts were thought likely to be at the top end of the table

    How little they knew !!

Any Notts watcher would have found themselves wondering if the writer had actually watched Notts play recently.

Fact is the reality for Notts ( and most fans knew this pre-season ) was always going to be a season of struggle, We hoped we were wrong, Sadly results so far have proved otherwise.

If Notts perform well in T20 and actually recreate their 2017 victory then the Notts hierarchy can claim even if we get relegated that the season was not a total disaster

I wonder how many of us would agree ?

  14. Some comments about @StuartBroad8 have been made re his performances in CC. In 83 non Test FC matches he has taken 289 wickets at 25.56,superb ! Most of this for Notts. Batting mid 20s average, fine as he is a great bowler and useful batsman

  15. In the 2018 MVP Tables :

    https://www.thepca.co.uk/mvp-domestic-full-2018/

Broad came 247th and Hales 318th!!!

Come on, Richard, let's get real, he's long past his best.

The excuses for Notts have to end and 'loyal Members need to demonstrate their loyalty by continuing to put pressure on the Committee to make some very significant changes at the very top of how this Club is run.
