Hampshire Specsavers D1 at Welbeck CC Draw

Day 4

WELLIES THE ONLY ATTIRE SUITABLE FOR WELBECK

As unseasonable weather patterns prevail and the match is drawn

I think the umpires took marginally longer today to conclude it was too wet and would remain too wet even if it stopped raining for long enough to start the drying out process. So Notts follow up the fighting draw at Edgbaston with a limp effort of a damp drawn game; but were once again the second best of the two teams.
Day 3

NO PLAY ON DAY THREE AT WET WELBECK
Another total wipe out with the umpires ruling out any play for today at 9AM.

Day 2

DAY TWO WASHED OUT AT WELBECK

Day 1
NOTTS AGAIN SECOND BEST IN UNHAPPY RETURN TO WELBECK

Hampshire ended the opening day of the inaugural championship fixture at Welbeck in an extremely strong position after yet another poor Notts batting performance in front of a crowd of around 1,000.

South African Kyle Abbott did most of the damage taking 6 for 37 off 14 overs. Too many Notts batsman were culpable for their own dismissals as skipper Steven Mullaney played a lone hand scoring a patient 45 off 114 balls (4x4, 1x6) as Notts scored a paltry 162 all out, well under par on a pitch with bounce and some sideways movement but no real terrors. Teams have got wise to the fact that they just need to frustrate Notts and limit run scoring opportunities and then sooner or later a daft shot will be played, the ability to bat time seems an alien concept to the expensively compiled top order. It is telling that the highest partnership was a meagre 51 runs for the seventh wicket between Mullaney and Pattinson. Hampshire lost Soames early to the wholehearted Fletcher who conceded 10 in seven overs. Change bowlers Wood and Ball carried little threat as Weatherley and Rahane added 80 for the second wicket in 27 overs batting exactly like you should on the wicket i.e. with patience. Rahane was out to Ball just before the close but Notts finished the day with the familiar zero points haul.

Hampshire won the toss and inserted Notts after an uncontested toss. In came Wood and Ball and out went Carter and Broad from the Birmingham game. Patterson-White was frustratingly left out of eleven as the management continued to pick the same ever misfiring top order. Notts lost a wicket with the third ball of the day, Slater playing on to Barker (Scoreboard End), 0 for 1. In the sixth over, Abbott (Bowling Green End) had Nash (6) leg before, 17 for two. Six overs later, Clarke (6) edged Abbott to Weatherley at second slip, 41 for three. A heavy shower stopped play at 1215 with Notts 54 for three after 17.1 overs. An early lunch was taken.

Play resumed at 1325 and Duckett (22) was out 11 balls after the resumption, being caught behind off Fuller having had a dreadful waft outside off stump, 55 for four. Mullaney and Patel added 30 for the fifth wicket until another bad stroke this time from Patel saw him edge Abbott (Bowling Green End) to keeper Alsop. Moores (6) was next out leg before to a well pitched up delivery from Barker (Scoreboard End), 105 for 6. Mullaney hit Fuller for six over mid wicket, probably the highlight of an appalling day for Notts. Tea was taken at 1600 with Notts 145 for 6 off 55 overs with Mullaney on 37 and Pattinson on 18.

Collapse o'clock

After tea the timetabled collapse arrived on schedule, Mullaney and Pattinson had added 51 for the seventh wicket when Pattinson (22) lost his middle stump to Abbott. In his next over Abbott picked up his fifth wicket with Wood lost his off stump departing for a duck, 158 for 8. Fletcher edged the next ball for four through the slips but perished the following ball edging Abbott to Northeast at slip, 162 for nine. Mullaney (45) was the last man to go as three balls later he edged Fuller to Alsop. Notts 162 all out in 60.2 overs, Abbott 6 for 37. Notts had lost their four wickets for six runs in 16 balls.

Dropping rare chances

In the third over of the reply, Fletcher got Soames (2) to edge to Mullaney at second slip, 5 for one. Fletcher bowled a seven over spell from the Scoreboard End and was replaced by Jake Ball. In his first over, Ball had Weatherley dropped on 15 at third slip by Nash diving to his right. With a large majority of the crowd on a cool chilly day gone, Ball finally picked up a wicket as Rahane (34) edged him to Mullaney at second slip, 85 for two. Night watchman Crane (5 not out) survived 14 balls as Hampshire closed on 93 for two off 33 overs with Weatherley on 47 not out. Once again Pattinson went wicket less. Luckily the ground managed to avoid heavy afternoon showers to the east and west as the full days allocation was possible as stumps were drawn at 1909. Notts will be hoping that the weather forecasters are correct and that little play will be possible in next three days. Despite wholesale changes to the playing staff, Notts now 12 championship games without a win continue to look a very poor underachieving uncompetitive outfit.

Something is clearly wrong somewhere...and things have to change very soon as the supporters are getting extremely agitated in terms of where the club are heading. MAG

12 Games without a win

The first anniversary of Nottinghamshire's last championship win will be with us soon and at times since, it has felt like just that. That the win at Chelmsford June 2018 will be Notts' last championship win, certain the last in Division 1 for a while. We haven't been in the hunt (for a win) since last June and have more often then not been on the wrong end of a good hiding too.

So what has gone wrong? Head Coach Peter Moores would have it nothing much is wrong (since the revamp of the batting at the end of 2018); it's a new team bedding in (as it were) and young players are by nature inconsistent are excuses he's used only this week. Peter loves to make it simple, "batters" bat and score runs and bowlers bowl and take wickets. A good simple plan. Unfortunately, "batters" aren't batting for long enough or scoring nearly enough runs and the bowlers are bowling too long and not taking wickets quick enough. Bring fielders into the mix and you would say too many catches are being put down compared to what you'd expect from a professional team in this era.

One good note, at least on D-Day Notts dug-in, gritted it out under constant pressure over the whole of Day 4 at Edgbaston and came away with a draw but more importantly stopped Bears recording another win, a win that would have pushed us further back. But with Chris Nash, Ben Duckett dug-in applied himself for 2-3 sessions. He admits to regrets of not finishing the job, and indeed his wicket lead to the familiar Notts wobble accompanied by 3 more wickets in quick succession, but even his harshest critics would have concede that Ben made a significant improvement in his red ball form for Notts in that second innings.Prior to that innings Duckett had been too flamboyant as an opener, carelessly gifting his wicket repeatedly but Peter Moores, as loyal ashe is, will see the Duckett 140 as vindication to his decision to utilise Duckett as an opening partner for Ben Slater.

Collectively the batting was a shambles again in the first innings at Edgbaston, so change has to be implemented, in personnel, in batting order or in both probably.

Ben Slater has been better than expected since his one way ticket on the Red Arrow last year and plays in the same way, regardless of format or match situation, his natural game I suppose and as a opener only; so do we stick or twist with one or with both openers? Slater has been the one ray of hope at times in 2019 as was Joe Clarke until we returned from the One Day Cup to the red ball, what has happened to his form? Perhaps nothing, he's got out or been got out all too quickly into his innings to know.

That win 350 days ago was skippered in Steven Mullaney's absence (he was doing something with the England Lions at the time) by Chris Nash.

Are we now allowed to question the selection of Samit Patel? He has rarely been a wicket taking spin bowler, likely to put the jitters into the opposition's minds. Combine that with his zero form with the batin 2019 and you have to start wondering about alternatives because he isn't justifying Peter Moores' undying faith in him.

The bowling unit in general hasn't shown that it can bowl a side out twice yet thisseason, but this is precisely what it has do to generate the wins we need if we are retain our Division 1 status.

We have had Stuart Broad available all season so far and he hasn't delivered; has he lost the plot? Has Jake Ball lost pace, as well as his mojo? Andy Pick's cartel is on rocky ground. Poor Fletcher is again carrying his colleagues and perhaps deserves a rest.

James Pattinson was rusty at Edgbaston, but the expected bounce at Welbeck is likely to bring back his shine and his presence is sure to put doubts into the minds of the Hampshire skipper; do they bowl first on Sunday, effectively choosing to bat last on a club ground wicket or do they opt to have the toss and a chance to face Patto's 90mph bullets.

Peter's options

Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, springs to mind as there hasn't been a net gain in sun loungers since last season, the departures cancelling out the new arrivals. Add to that the sick notes and the see that the management have left the squad worse off than they were. There is just the potential for those players to be better than the predecessors but more" inconsistent".

So what are Peter's options?:

  • do nothing
  • shuffle his deck and change the batting order
  • introduce some "new faces"

Who might the "new faces" be; Mark Footitt, Lyndon James and Jake Libby or should he go for the form players in Liam Patterson-White and Joey Evison? You could make a case for the inclusion of each of these players and perhaps a couple of others not mentioned but PM will see their selection as a gamble even though sticking with the usual failing (to win) suspects is perhaps the greater gamble. Changes in September will be too late.

  1. Perhaps the surprise to many of us is the much improved form of Chris Nash.In our poor start to red ball cricket he has been the one player to show reasonable form, Long may it continue...

As for the rest , There is certainly a case for resting at least two players , Maybe even more Trouble is we are restricted once more by the clubs short sighted policy of having a relatively small first team squad,

Short term we have little option if we want to make changes other than to play the likes of LPW.Long term the club needs to think deeply and decide whether they want , Do we see ourselves as one of the top sides or are we content to be grubbing around hoping to avoid relegation each season.

If it's the latter then reform is needed We need to have to to clear targets in mind and that will only come with a mass clear out of the coaching staff.

For too long now we have been content with second best, Surely a team with Notts obvious strengths, ie test match ground and (hopefully) cash to strengthen the team should be looking to do just that.

Maybe it might be too late for this summer ... Unless Ashwin proves to be an inspired signing... But one thing is for certain if Notts want a better 2020 then planning needs to start now!

  2. You could cynically argue that as long as we're hosting WC games, big international games, packed T20 blast games and from 2020 the dreaded 100 comp. and Restaurant Six is full, Ms Pursestrings and the DoC are not really that bothered about the red ball stuff. it brings little revenue in, let's face it, compared to the Friday night brigade spending at the bars. A few seasons ago at a members forum the, then, coach(who was apparently doing the two roles himself) practically burst into tears when someone dared to accuse the club of underachieving. He then came out with "were a small county argument compared to Yorkshire etc". Ironic shortly after that our own superman removed his red cape and shiny red boots and gleefully accepted just the one, new, role that the club prepared for him(of course he would have jettisoned Notts for the England role he so badly wanted, but, alas they didn't want Meal Deal Mick in the new set up.

    1. Englands loss is Notts burden. It is his mediocrity that holds the club back. The sooner he has gone the sooner our county can flourish.

Regarding tomorrows game, there has been several heavy cloudbursts in the North of the County this morning. The weather forecast is good for Sunday but does anyone know how good the drainage is at the ground as the last thing we want is to pay for parking and ground admission and then sit for half the day waiting for the outfield to dry out.

Looking forward to it PacMan but I live sufficiently close to Welbeck to check on Notts twitter to see if there will be a delayed start before I leave home. Unless the weather changes dramatically over the course of the four days another draw looks favourite. Is this Patto's last game or have we got him for the Kent away game?

  3. At least three seasons now and practically three new teams but very little progress. As many on here have pointed out it could be argued that the only common denominator over these failed years is the management. There’s never been a bigger ‘must win’ game than this next one at Welbeck anything other than that and a club crisis surely beckons.

  4. Can only see the weather being the winner at welbeck, so hopefully no thrashing this week and a minimum 5 points for a draw...but we will be asked to bat and with Fidel etc...who knows...!!!

Ben Slater; Ben Duckett; Chris Nash; Joe Clarke; Samit Patel; Steven Mullaney(c); Tom Moores(wk); James Pattinson; Luke Wood; Luke Fletcher and Jake Ball - well, they really had to play Jake didn't they due his connections with Welbeck.

Men against boys again I am afraid with their bowlers seeming to be bowling on a different surface than our lads. The body language in the field clearly showed a complete lack of confidence. Compare the bristling aggression of Kyle Abbott against Jake Ball who doesn't look like he wants to dominate the batsmen. Just an example and not aimed at Jake who was let down by two dropped catches. Slack batting and non penetrative bowling and dropped catches suggest relegation is inevitable. It won't happen but an experienced Kolpak batsman might make a big difference.

  13. Interesting to read Dave G's comment, about a split in the dressing room, It might go some way to explaining our embarrassing form.

There are generally two main reasons behind splits, One is the problem of cash, Its likely some of the new players could be on a considerably better salary, The other main reason is a couple of strong characters polarising the dressing room and creating cliques,

Whatever the cause it's time management got their fingers out and did the job they are paid a considerable amount to do.

Our season so far almost makes you wish that we had been relegated last season, Problems that were evident last season ( and for a few seasons before) might have been properly addressed.

  14. There is becoming an air of inevitability with every Notts performance.

When supporters start comparing this team, to the one we witnessed pre Gary Sobers, then you know there is " trouble at mill:

The club is crying out for a "Clive Rice" type figure who can inspire others around him on and off the pitch.

Unfortunately in the first division you normally have at least one or two players in each team that can make a big difference ( Patel warwickshire - Abbot Hampshire) to name but two.

We are certainly lacking an impact player at present.

With the current crop of players we have at our disposal , it is difficult to see how we are going to raise ourselves from the foot of the table.

Signing Ashwin to replace Pattinson, is unlikely to make any difference.

Let's face it , how many wickets did Swanny get at Trent Bridge, and he was a better bowler than Ashwin.

If we are to salvage anything from the ruins of the season to date, then we must gamble on team selection and install a couple of short term Kolpak playes if possible to freshen up the team, and inspire some confidence which is evidently in short supply.

    1. Careful, Mustapha, when I raised the subject of Kolpaks last season(when we had no squad depth in the batting, at least) I was told by posters on the is superb site to STOP banging on about them as we didn't need them and if I carried on I would be stoned alive and sentenced to 200 hours community service. These same posters seem to have gone VERY quiet now however for some reason.I do disagree with you a little regarding Ashwin, however. I think he's a world class performer but yes I accept your point. We will have to prep used, turning pitches surely or what is the logic in signing him at a ground not renowned for producing Bunsen burners. However this will be also dependant on the weather and staying dry. Agree completely they look a demoralised outfit, short on confidence with little options due to us opting to go with such a small squad and the continued reluctance to play a young player from the stiffs.

      Delete
    2. Yes I take your points on board.

We were informed a couple of years ago by the hierarchy, that the club had abandoned the previous policy of signing Kolpak's in favour of giving opportunities to local produce.

However, apart from young Tom Moores, that has not happened to date, and without other international talent in your team you struggle to compete at this level, as we are doing.

As for Ashwin, he may be a potent force in his home country, but he didn't
break any records for Worcester, and quite frankly, I can't see him busting a gut to help Notts in their present predicament.

  15. The weather Forecast for the next 3 days looks even more grim than the cricket! Little prospect of much play, if any, so we will remain bottom by probably an even greater margin. We're doomed!!!

  16. Zanga, if you're right about the dressing room split being to do with resentment over pay differentials then it resembles familiar stories in football. Such disputes in football however are mitigated by smart management and pay based on performance. I'm not sure that Notts have either of these factors to help. Your analysis feels right though as our decline in performance standards has been dramatic. Hard to see that anything other than a complete clear out of management and coaches will help.

  17. Peter Moore's record at Notts: 2016 as assistant to Meal Deal Mick - relegated, 2017, won two one day comps but only gained promotion by the skin of our teeth after a major slump in the second half of the season, 2018 a flying start followed by some useless, fightless, uncompetitive dross that has continued in 2019.

  18. Is the whole regime at Trent bridge too "friendly" ? Is there too much back slapping and self congratulation ? Is anyone actually laying the law down ? Anyone reading the riot act to underperforming players ? Is life on the staff at Trent Bridge just a cushy gravy train ?
Are the management and coaching staff too close to the players ?
Has success in red ball cricket been relegated to of little importance ?
Why are SO MANY players out of form at the same time ? What is being said and done in the Committee room to address the ongoing problems ?Why are more eager second team players NOT BEING GIVEN A CHANCE to show what they can do ? Why do we have so many pretty average ex-Notts players in top positions ? ( Newall , Pick ,Franks to name but three). Is the County 4 day game becoming irrelevant in this day and age of instant gratification? Are the players now prepared to slog away for four days to earn a crust and thus reduce their more lucrative white ball careers ?( Hales and Gurney spring to mind - others to follow?)
Out of a sample of 1,000 of the general population how many could name last seasons County Champions? If we perform a miracle and win the blast T20 competition does that mean we can forget the 50 Over Royal London campaign and the so far abysmal County season ?
As Bob Dylan famously sang " the times they are a changin".
Priorities for success are not what they were . This will be more apparent next year with the 100 Ball thrash competition .
The game of cricket is now all about bums on seats and revenue . So the County 4 day stuff becomes less and less important .
We have to ask ourselves this question . Without the Blast T20 and Royal London Comp - how many County teams would be financially viable? How many would rapidly turn into part-time outfits ? Will Derbyshire and Leicestershire actually still exist as proper cricket playing clubs ( fully pro) in say ten years time ?
    What do others think ?

  19. 75 Not Out...points and questions we'll raised, and I agree the lack of strong leadership has been missing from TB since Newell first became coach, he was an average county pro, and his career has just gone downhill and he's taken the club with him...just who is he accountable to..? What is his job..? What are his key work objectives..? How can he have both a working and personal relationship with the CEO...? I was once a proud passionate member, but no longer.. I am ashamed embarrassed to associate myself with this rabble, a club that just treats members with disdain and disrespect...trying to get answers from the committee is like Notts trying to get a batting point...nigh in impossible...I will continue to go this year, but only to see my fellow member friends, but I will not renew my membership unless there are 'top of the shop' changes starting with the DOC...I look forward to the members forum on 01st July...!!

  20. So, as I look at the rain lashing down I start contemplating and is this the problem in a nutshell with reducing the red ball games we play. We now have one game less, meaning 7@home(this will be reduced further before too long). England, being England will always cop a spell of weather like this. It wouldn't matter where this game is played TB, Welbeck, Gorsey Lane or Pluto you can't play when it's raining. But add to that games finishing early also. Assuming we don't bowl another ball in this fixture, that will be 4 days and practically 2 whole sessions lost for the combination of reasons stated above. The answer, possibly ro start watching other Counties, 2nd team and/or league cricket which some of us do, but, it's not for everyone with reduced facilities and matches of much less significance or interest to many Notts members. Other alternatives are going to the away games but due to working commitments and the travel situation, again, this is not always an option for a lot of members. It's beginning to make me wonder just how little real first class red ball cricket we could all be watching from now on as the game changes like never before. Just a thought.

  21. You are correct 'PacMan' - so why, as with Football aren't Matches re-arranged or an extra day built in where at least a complete day has been lost? After all 'sport' has to be about fairness, Promotion and Relegation should not be decided by the weather. The ECB needs to take a whole new and radical look at Championship cricket which I regard as often far more exciting than limited Overs matches with all the twists and turns that can occur and some extremely exciting finishes. The financial advantages of Membership at Notts seem to be getting less and less.

Not his fault and a good team man from what I can tell, but it shows the complex difficulties in signing overseas players these days.Of course theres always the other option and do what Kolpakshire do.Then theyre not told to rest by their cricket boards. Gotta go now, there may be supply problems ahead of thursdays game for Cafe Six and im in charge of obtaining the sandwhiches and pasties from Greggs

  26. Pattinson is in both the one-day and four-day Australia A squads for their tour of England, which begins with a D/N one-dayer v Northants on Thurs 20 June, the last scheduled day of Notts' CC game at Tunbridge Wells - so I think the answer is that he won't be available. The Kent game will therefore be the fifth CC game out of seven which we'll contest without an overseas player.
