Eoin Morgan show of support for The Hundred and hints it should replace the T20 Blast
Morgan, who captained England to their first ever World Cup over a week ago, believes adding a fourth format could be too strenuous, but doesn’t believe that should prevent the introduction of The Hundred

England ODI captain Eoin Morgan has thrown his weight behind The Hundred which is set to come into the domestic programme next year, and even hinted the T20 Blast should be the competition to make way.
The new 100-ball competition will make its debut next summer and will feature eight city-based franchises in a league system, which will then be followed by a knockout stage and a final, but the format has attracted controversy since the idea was launched.
Now Morgan who captained England to their first ever World Cup success just over a week ago, believes adding a fourth format could put too much strain on an already packed domestic calendar, but maintains The Hundred is not the problem.
"I think over the next few years, one of the formats will miss out – we can't play with four formats," the 32-year-old told PA at the draft of the inaugural Euro T20 Slam on Friday.
"The Hundred, yes, I do think we need it. Whether it's The Hundred, 10 overs or 20 overs, we need one franchise-based tournament, with fewer teams, in order to consistently sell the game to the country.
"Anybody I speak to who loves sport but doesn't necessarily love cricket is crying out for a tournament that he or she understands, because 18 teams going for a long period of time just doesn't make sense to anybody."
Asked if that mean the T20 Blast is the one that should be culled in his opinion, Morgan shrugged and said: "I'm not making the decisions but..."
Morgan was also announced as the 'icon player' for the Dublin Chiefs on Friday, the Irish capital's franchise for the Euro T20 Slam, which begins next month.

Several prominent current and former players were drafted into the six teams that will make up the inaugural Euro T20 Slam in London on Friday.
The six teams - two each based in Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands - each have one designated 'icon player' and one 'marquee player'. The identities of the icon and marquee players had been set beforehand but not which teams they would represent.
The matches will take place in three cities - Edinburgh, Amsterdam and Dublin - and the competition will run from August 30 to September 22.

Clash
English counties are holding firm over releasing their players for the inaugural Euro T20 Slam amid concerns over a potential clash of dates with their own fixtures, in the latest in a series of conflicts between county cricket and franchise leagues regarding player availability.
Several players holding county contracts were picked up in Friday's draft for the Euro Slam, which will take place between August 30 and September 22, but will likely be unavailable for the majority of the new competition if their counties reach the knockout stages of the Vitality Blast.
The Blast's quarter-finals run from September 4 to September 7, with Finals Day on September 21. Further, there are two rounds of Championship cricket - starting on September 10 and September 16 - that clash with Euro Slam fixtures.
Nottinghamshire, for example, saw three important members of their Blast side picked up in Friday's draft, in Samit Patel - who is contracted for all formats - and T20 specialists Harry Gurney and Dan Christian. "In all three cases, Notts cricket will take precedence," confirmed the club.
Wondering about Alex Hales?
He's busy with the Caribbean Premier League.
The only two English players picked for the CPL were Alex Hales and Laurie Evans, and neither will be permitted to miss games for their county to play.
This is a either a joke or simple fake news to wind us up still further......isn't it....please

Does this highlight Samit's lack of commitment to Notts now?

On a serious note, is this competition a badly timed April fool's joke? Who is organising it? Why?
ReplyDeleteFranchise cricket is the rising menace, yet the one hope is the public, current supporters of the game or not, only recognise achievements for representative teams. I really think the British public loathe franchises
ReplyDelete'It could be Rotterdam or anywhere,'. Don't normally complain abt IPL / CPL as there is a massive fan base, but this is a ridiculous competition. Hope we aren't going to lose Samit when we may need him in Sept. Huge crowds in Amsterleeven, Clontarf and Glasgow no doubt.
